How do you do the Japanese characters?

I'm guessing flyingchicken uses a tablet and
has some knowledge of katakana and hiragana.

Could've been drawn by hand and scanned, or drawn by hand in a gfx program as well.

I need a scanner.

Oh crap. I hope it isn't upside down, I drew from reference that
appeared to be the right side up, so... here's hoping.
There's an animal-specialist in my class and she's going
to jump on that when she sees it. <_<

Well, they're definitely upside down, but they could be simply tilted down. They're also attached to the hip. But if that girl comes over to bug you, give her the 'ole "artists' prerogative" finger.

Digital painting is definitely something tricky to master, especially if using a mouse. >.<
