Well, I just recently finished a MTG mat design for a friend. It was my first time with this style of shading.

^if you're gonna draw eyes why not study some simple simplifications of the realistic eye here? for starters, the four points above+three points below is helpful in drawing all sorts of eyes more complex than ovals!
