The Final and Definitive Sandwich Thread

Are any of these sandwiches?

I'd probably just call that pastrami on rye then. Which is a very popular deli sandwich as well.

I've seen some places offer a California Ruben which is turkey and coleslaw instead of corned beef and sauerkraut.

Pastrami on rye is definitely popular, but doesn't generally come with sauerkraut and thousand island. There was a sandwich place here that if you just ordered a Reuben would actually ask what kind of meat you wanted. They definitely considered the condiments and rye bread to be the identifying characteristics. I was in line there and the guy in front of me ordered a "roast beef Reuben" and I was...disturbed.

yeah that's weird. It's like Arby's which touts three gyro flavors, traditional with the lamb meat and then a turkey and roast beef version, which are just pitas not gyros!

If it is a quesadilla it has already been cut, thus it has pieces. If it hasn't been cut it is merely the makings of a quesadilla. A quesadilla in the making. A potential quesadilla. An unfinished quesadilla. When a quesadilla is served it has already been cut and requires no utensils.
You go on to admit that this is not in fact true.

We're agreed that utensils are banned, which
Makes for no petite hitch but this grand hitch:
In this curious case,
A piece of a ques-
adilla's what counts as a sandwich.

Your argument has been thoroughly dispatched. Putting it in a limerick that is far below your usual standard appears forced. We should move on. Have you a better argument for why an Oreo is not a sandwich? Care to weigh in on the double down question?

A cookie

next you're gonna tell me chocolate chip cookies are a sandwich because the chocolate chips are surrounded by bread

No I won't, but you did dodge the question. I suspect you did that on purpose rather than answer, since Oreos are probably the best known example of sandwich cream cookies on the market.

I'm with you, myself, that the overriding thing there is cookie, and even a sandwich cream cookie is not a sandwich, but I could see someone making that argument.

Ah, but sandwich style cookie merely describes the cookie, it does not make it a sandwich

Similar to how "hot dog" or "submarine" or "hamburger" describes the style of a particular sandwich and doesn't make it any the less a sandwich.

Hamburgers are not a sandwich, recant this heresy at once

They are a type of sandwich, just like a sandwich cream is a type of cookie. Oreos are cookie first, sandwich type, hamburgers are sandwich first, hamburger type.

OK, but in the classic square and rectangle sense, a burger is never called a sandwich even if it is one by technicality

How about this?

Spoiler Yum :

Pastrami, kidney beans, cheese, brie brie, tomoto, relish, sweet chilli sauce, onion, home made bread.

Lunch yesterday.

Depends, are those two open-faced or did you combine them? :D

As someone pointed out, look at a fast food burger place menu. Every numerically identified for ease of ordering combo meal has a price, and underneath it there will be another price invariably labeled "just the sandwich." In other words, the people who sell them call them sandwiches all the time.

92% of posters disagree with you.
And 100% of posters who have first posted in this thread since our argument began agree with me.

You have been beaten. I will leave aside your philistinism regarding limerick quality, as I don't like to kick a man when he's down.

oreos fulfill the requirement for being sandwiches

Of course they do! :) That's why sandwich cream cookies unironically sandwich cream with cookies.
