The future of Fall from Heaven

I wish you success. Elemental has been such a monumental disappointment up to this point that I don't even play it anymore. I have a nice game of Fall Further running in the background right now. If you can make Elemental not suck, I'll be impressed. Fool me once, shame on you, Stardock. Stardock won't fool me twice, I've lost my faith and my $50.

If Brad is responsible for this abomination, I'm glad his reign of terror is coming to an end. I hope he got fired.

can anyone give me a short summary of what happened here in the last few weeks and what that means for us ... who still love to play ffh 2 after years?

i was bored from civ5 after 1 1/2 games and returned quickly to ffh 2, that is still as exciting as at the first time i played it.

Kael moved on to Stardock to work on Elemental. A full-time job. I doubt there will be any new patches.

people still work on RiFe and Wild Mana

Wildmana 8.34 (latest patch, WM 9.0 is in work) and Orbis are quite stable. RiFE tends to crash, at least for me and a bunch of others, but for a lot of gamers it works quite well.
Be sure that the modmod you are playing is compatible with the latest patch of ffh2 you have.

aye ... Wildmana 8.34 tends to work ... (personally RiFe works for me) .. and Orbis is likely stable.

Wildmana is *probably* the most stable .... pre-9 ... 9 will likely not be stable at all.

 It will be even more stable than the current version or any other wildmana version before. There is a public beta for month now. And I actually listen to beta testers :p

anyway, maybe we should better talk about Elemental patch 1.1 in this thread. Any news on that?

Typically, the only PCs RifE crashes on reliably are those that simply do not have the hardware to handle it.

This is also why most crashes come around turn 400, rather than randomly throughout the game; That's about the point where you have a large number of cities and units on the map.

ah, that makes sense.

Since none of the modmods are unstable for me (thus its all guesswork based on how different it is from base FFH) .... maybe 1) we should discuss this in another thread ...

and 2) those experiencing crashes should let us know if those crashes are before the late-game.

I don't no nuthin about Elemental but I think 1.1 was released. Kael's input will be to versions after 1.1

Edit: Stop the Presses... they've changed their minds, it now looks like Kael's all up in 1.1. http://forums.stardock.com/400142

The 1.1 patch has been changing/mutating on what it was going to be. It was supposed to be out in October, then slid to the start of November and finally pushed back further as Kael came on board and they kept adding to what the patch was going to fix.

I got Elemental when it first came out and it was in far worse shape than Civ 5 was. The game has a lot of promise, but seeing the link to Master of Magic (what was supposed to be the inspiration for the game) was almost impossible and clearly there were several game balance issues along with bugs, etc. They got most of the bugs out so the game runs fairly well, but a lot of the game mechanics are just flat bad.

I think 1.1 will be a quick fix to change several aspects of the game mechanics, but it is going to take Kael awhile to get the mess fixed and get things back on track. Star Dock also went from offering the first expansion for free to existing customers to now offering the first two expansions for free.

I suspect a lot of things will get fixed with the first expansion, but there are a lot of parallels with what happen at Star Dock and what happen with Civ 5 in that both companies laid people off a couple of months before release and both released games that were not even close to being ready to go, although I think Civ 5 was the more complete product of the two. Star Dock in particular has had to hire people back and brought in Kael to fix the mess.

years ... will take years ...

Except Civ 5 was ready to go. Civ 5 was way beyond ready to go. It wasn't perfect, but then nothing ever is. It was, at least, a complete product.

A complete product... I guess you could call it that. It is a complete product that I personally think sucked. Like Listerine instead of Scope.

Almost always people are let go right before or after a big release .... all the extra jobs only needed for working on such a large project. Such jobs that aren't needed during Patches/Cleanup ... or more particular such jobs that aren't needed during the design process of the next version.
