I see, well each team will play in a league - thats the main competition and that will start somewhere in august and end in may and this ain't gonna be a quick rundown :(.

You have many different leagues, the very best in English football (there are no British leagues mainly English clubs play in English leagues but there are exceptions) - is the Premier League. A team will play the 19 other teams in the premier league twice at their home ground and away ground. 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and no points for a lose. Obviously the team with the highest points will end up winning the league. The three clubs with the lowest number of points will be relegated to the league below. So if you are relegated from the EPL you will end up in the "Championship" the 2nd tier of English football. In the championship the winning team and runners up will be promoted to the EPL whilst the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th placed teams will play one another and the winner will be also promoted to the premier league. This promotion/relegation format is pretty consistent thoughout English football.

So it goes:

English Premier League,
The Championship,
League 1,
League 2,
Conference,
Conference North and Conference South.
...and on and on and on.....there are too many to mention here.

Nobody really cares much below League 2. The beauty of the English system is that I could theoretically start up a club tommorow in my home town and get accepted into the 28th tier of English football or whatever it is and if my team is successfull i could eventually get myself promoted all the way to the premier league ;)

Running paralell with the league system are cup tournaments. So the most important cup in English football is the FA Cup (special bonus points for working out what FA stands for ;) ) which is a knockout competition where teams are randomly drawn against one another. Premier League teams will enter in the third round after many qualifying, preliminary and proper rounds before by teams in the lower leagues. The great thing about this, is that little teams play massive clubs and beat them - we love an underdog story in Brit-land ;).

Then we have a second domestic trophy called the league cup. This is only open to clubs in the EPL, Championship and league 1 + 2. It is a knockout competition and like the FA cup teams are randomly drawn against one another. This concludes in late winter - nobody really cares about it.

The league format is basically used all around Europe with some modifications. Plus most countries will have two domestic cup competitions.

Now I noticed you mentioned about how european football is organised, there also exist some European cups which sieve through the very best in each league around Europe and pits them against one another to win the most prestigious club competition in the world. This is known as the European champions League. The very best leagues like England/Spain/Italy are assigned 4 entries to this competition - so in this case that would be the top 4 from the EPL, the top 4 from La Liga (Spanish EPL ;) ) and the top 4 from Serie A. Other weaker leagues like in Sweden, Norway are given fewer spaces and have to fight their way through qualifying phases before entering the competition proper ;).

In English class, why can't the author's purpose ever just be to turn a profit from his works? Why does it always have to be some altruistic, higher reason for writing? Do people not just write because it's their chosen way of making money? Or less cynically, just because they enjoy writing and don't have a deeper reason?

Well there are probably many books where the writers main intention was to make money, but my guess is that the kind of books one studies in English class are worth studying because they were primarily inspired by something greater than cash, even if the writer wrote for a living.

The curtains of his apartment were blue.

This clearly signifies his depression and yatta yatta yatta dissatsifaction and disillusionment with society in general yatta yatta yatta

or

now hang on, bear with me on this, but... the curtains... they were blue.

For instance, James Joyce's works were inspired by the desire to troll English students.

You speak for yourself; when it's your only piece of silverware you have to be proud of it. ;)

As Middlesbrough's only major trophy, I have to be proud of it anyway. With two successive promotions, who knows what Southampton could win this year. :D

Boro? I'm so sorry :P

Anyway I have another question. Why are some americans on the internet so defensive and weird? Whenever i read an article about an american who did something silly like shoot his foot with his gun by accident or have 25 kids and live in a caravan park there are always comments from someone in america apologising to the rest of the world and saying that they are "white trash hicks" or that kind of general sentiment. Why do americans have the urge to grovel to the rest of the world?

It's only a subset of Yanks. They seem to cringe everytime they see a negative article on an american in the international press and they feel the need to explain and apologise. Frequently they will say "oh most americans are not like this!".

It's probably because America has some of the most vocal insane politicians in the world, and Americans sometimes see themselves as stereotype of stupidity.

Just like the Middle East.

When I think of Americans, "groveling to the rest of the world" is not the first trait that comes to mind

USA #1

(may as well get it out of the way, now, back to the question at hand)

Very helpful info, thank you. :)
