Weeding, fertilizing, spraying, irrigating. Maintaining equipment, fences, facilities, and buildings. Caring for livestock. Sometimes working side jobs.

Assuming he only has a single type of crop, planting, spraying, fertilizing, shipping etc to maintain the crops and running the entire business end of the farm. plus you have maintenance of the equipment and the farm.

Most farmers will plant a variety of crops and/or raise animals. By having a variety of crops you space out plantings, harvestings, etc so when you get done planting one crop you move into planting the next.
Animals need constant maintenance. Feeding, checking or treating illness, breeding, milking/shearing/egg collection, selling and buying, again maintenance of facilities and the general business aspects.

Yes, in colder places there will be less to do in hte middle of winter, but there is usually something. People with smaller operations often cut wood and do maintenance during the winter and larger farms will do a lot on the business end.

Fix all the &@^# that breaks. Bandage and heal from all the *#$) you break while fixing the other stuff.

I was going to say engage in riotous orgies with hookers, cocaine, and blackjack.
I guess your idea is more realistic though.

I suppose so.

If I weren't so lazy, I'd just get on and do it anyway. But this is thinking outside the economic box.

Just not enough that will hire a person to do it.

It's less a matter of if you could keep them busy(if you wanted to work an 8 hours day yourself) and more a matter that unless you're a pretty big operation the profit margin isn't enough to offer a wage that could support another person.(Edit: ah nm, I catch the gist of that now)

Did the question actually want a more specific answer along the lines of, "What are the typical tasks that go into row cropping in a 12 month cycle?"

What do you mean? It shows a whole lot of different signs on my PC. You might just not have the proper fonts installed.

To me it are all rectangles.

Actually, I remember reading a study once that found that sunblock can actually increase the risk of cancer if you rub it in too much. Sunscreen works best when it absorbs the UV rays at the surface of the skin, so that the free radicals released when it breaks down are not absorbed by the layers of skin that are alive and growing.
