The new Joker (Jared Leto)

I'm not allowed to comment these things because I am apparently the only one in the world who thinks Heath Ledger (may he RIP, and so forth) was just a horrible Joker.

You're not the only one.

Overblown and bizarrely powerful are how I would describe Heath Ledger's version.

All those super-heroes are bad ideas, imo. Not really something one can relate to in many ways, even next to traditional mythology heroes (Theseus, Perseus, Odysseus etc).
Let alone that Odysseus was an anti-hero as well as a hero.

I sort of liked Doc-Oc, in the second (old ;) ) Spiderman films.

I think he is a pretty good actor, btw. I never like that some actors do so drastic body-changes for roles. Bale is a worse example there.

Personally I have never enjoyed any of the superheros or the superhero genre in general. Much prefer sci-fi. Superhero comics, cartoons & movies seemed quite boring. I like stuff to make some sense, at least sci-fi tries.

I think there are so many potential types of stories they can do, that it's a bit depressing that they're only sticking to what they're sticking to.

I mean, I get why they do it, but I wish they'd expand their horizons and give us some superhero movies that are not based on a comic book or anything else. How amazing would it be to have a superhero movie that's set in a D&D type universe? Just a random example. Or you could have a "Hey WTH I have superpowers" type story that's set in a sci-fi universe like guardians of the galaxy or star wars, without using established characters. Or whatever.

Yeah, there are a million creative possibilities, I guess they don't trust movie-goers to appreciate them. Even the Star Wars films were pretty dull, IMO, could've been much more exciting & not just rehashing ancient themes but in space.

I think it's an outstanding trailer, with the one caveat that I'm a little bored with Bohemian Rhapsody. But it uses the song well. I don't mistake a good marketing campaign for a good movie, but Suicide Squad's trailers have both been excellent. The first one used a cover of the Bee Gees' pre-disco "I Started a Joke" to nice effect. Suicide Squad was never a comic I read, and when this film was announced I had no real interest. Anti-heroes are very tough to write as protagonists; a lot of the time, they just come across as a-holes that I can't identify with or root for. These trailers have sold me on the film, though.

I don't think I've seen Margot Robbie in anything, and I'm not very familiar with Harley Quinn, but she's definitely the highlight of the marketing campaign. Of course it's impossible to know whether she's as central to the actual movie, but she's *ahem* killing it so far.

As for Leto's Joker, I'm reserving judgment, but I am a fan of Ledger & Hamill's portrayals of the character as kind of scary, rather than Romero & Nicholson's more comedic versions. Leto definitely appears to be the former rather than the latter.

p.s. Here's that first trailer.

I like the new Joker design. We just need him to be as quotable as the previous two. :)

Leto's new scenes in the trailer do look good. Particularly the one where he is falling..

Bohemian Rapsody is not a good song/or a good song for the trailer either :band:

I watched Guardians and it was great, but I found the giant guy in a throne to be stupid and silly and unnecessary, as much as I get that he's probably a part of the lore to begin with and that they couldn't have really changed him much.

That's the other series of movies, but yeah, that was Thanos. Fans of the comics know who he is and what his appearance means, but I agree that he didn't really contribute anything to the movies he's appeared in so far. It's supposed to be foreshadowing, but it hasn't been handled very well, and has just been "fan service."

It just looks so stupid for some random "God" to be sitting on a throne on some asteroid or something, for someone not familiar with the character at least. It comes out of nowhere, it doesn't make sense, and it doesn't impact anything.

I'm going to have to go with you Egon and say I'm almost totally tapped out on the antihero thing. The more I watch about this the more I see something with great production and marketing value that I'm pretty sure I'm going to detest. I mean, I love a great villain as much as the next guy. I think they're probably more important than the hero. But I don't want them to be the hero. It was interesting for a little while but I'm pretty done with rooting for serial killers and rapists and drug producers or whatever edgeevilgoodcrap they come up with next. I'm almost tired enough of it to be done with Batman, even.

I'm sorry but that trailer was SO goddamn boring.

Suicide Squad was not a good movie. How Warner Bros could cast Will Smith, reshoot the movie to make it more like Guardians if the Galaxy, and then choose NOT to give him a dance scene is beyond comprehension.

The character motivations really started to unravel once the action begins. After that, it's hard figuring out why anyone does what.

I read it is generally seen as a bad film :/ Not even the actors' body of work helped, eg Margot's :)
