That's true, although I've heard there are dialects of Arabic that are mutually unintelligible.I have to admit that officially they aren't, and I didn't know that. But since the Semitic languages in question all originated in such a small area, it's not surprising that they are more alike than Indo-European languages from opposite ends of different continents.

How do you mean? Could you expand upon that?(Semitic languages have an interesting way to derive words from roots that is entirely different from how Indo-European languages work, by the way.)
