The Ligurian Religion
The Ligurian Religion is an monotheistic religion, based on the cult of the Supreme God Belanu.
In ancient times, the Ligurians venerated a large pantheon of gods, associated both to the natural elements both to the animals, like the god Cicnu, the Swan.
In spite of the elevated presence of gods, there was an circle of major gods, where the chief was the powerful Belanu, that, strange things in the ancient religion panorama, controlled two contrasting elements, the Sun and the Sea.
The contacters that the ligurian pepole had withe the gods, like a lot of ancient european civilizations, were the druids, that were the masters of the religious and tecnological secrets of the ligurians.
They made their religious rites into the ligurian woods, but, when the ligurian started to explore the mediterranean by sea, the druid made ships only for make religious rites on the ship to propitaite the sea travels.
Besides the good religious relationship with the woods and the sea, the Ligurians had a positive conception of the hereafter, like the egyptian one, with the graves rich of object of daily use that were going to be used into the hereafter by the dead. But the ligurian hereafter was identical to the real life: there are a lot of cases where the graves were filled by militay objects like swords or chariots, indicating a military activity of the dead.
When the first truly organized ligurain state was born, the king had to make relationship with the religious element: the druids penetrated immediatly into the political organization and contrasted a lot of times the actions of the king, because their positions were extremely conservative.
In fact the druids cosidered themselves the defenders of the true ligurian religion when the influence coming from outside started to operate on the ligurian traditions, because they were scared to lose the privileges coming from to be the only depositaries of the words sayed by gods. The trouble was that the various elements that could influence the ligurian religion were the expansion and the commerce with outside, that were an integral part of the politic of the various ligurian king, creating the contrast with the king and the druids.
Contrast grew up until the king Genumoccu, called the Saint, ascend to the trone, who decided to eliminate every possibile source of problems for the monarchy, doing lever on the religious element He inaugurated a radical reform of the Ligurian religion: on the contrary of what druids were doing, he supported a "heresy" spreading in the Ligurian population, the "Belanuism".
Belanuism was changing the Ligurian religion, from a strongly polytheistic religion, to a monotheistic religion, based on the Supreme God Belanu, that controlled the force that joust the life of all ligurians, the Sun and the Sea, while all the other gods were being declassed to minor Gods, to spirits, emissaries of Belanu.
Furthermore Genumoccu turned the real lineage into the direct Belanu expression: the king and his family became the only through with the divinity, in fact cancelling the druids' power.
But druids did not want to lose their power, and begin the first and for the moment the only Ligurian civil war: druids hid themselves in the woods and the mountains, but the troops of the king Genumoccu, animated by their fidelity towards the king and the new religion, defeated the druids in little time, probably turning the Ligurian civil war into one of the shortest civil war in the history.
Besides the political operations, Genumoccu had to operate on the population itself: he inaugurated a religious campaign make to operate on all the population, in particular on the younger, to spread the Belanuism in Liguria.
The campaign had an unexpected success, and besides spreading Belanuismo in all the population, made they highly fanatical and faithful to the sacerdotal caste.
But because the sacerdotal caste was the royal family, this caused a curious effect, which probably had been planned by the Re Genumoccu: ligurian population, extremely fanatical, was at the same time extremely faithful to the king, and this was preventing every possible "democratic interval" between the kingdom of two kings or the usurpation of the kingdom by a person not of the real house, because just died a king, the population immediatly hoped for the ascension to the throne of another one, coming from the real lineage, because he was otherwise coming to lack the fundamental through with Belanu on which all the fanatical population was depending.
The Holy Kingdom Of Liguria was formed so, and the the king's figure turned himself into the figure of Priest-King.
The new ligurian religion was under a lot of aspects bounded with the old religion.
The druids' old ceremonies, bound to the nature and to the sea, were changed in gorgeous regal ceremonies officiated by the reigning lineage if not from the king himself.
These ceremonies were keeping the floor of the ceremonies of the druids, but they were magnifyed, they become opulent and spectacular, true and real shows for the population, which was seeing the kingdom wealth demonstration in these ceremonies.
The relationship with religion, the nature and the hereafter, remained almost unchanged, even if many aspects were modified so that they supported the king's decisions in varied moments
