You don't want that sort of starvation - if you want to lose weight, it needs to be done gradually. Otherwise, you lose muscle as well and you can't really live a normal active life. Go running three times a week and plan your meals; that should work better.

Exactly. I'm very angry at programmes like The Biggest Loser, which teach people incredibly bad exercise and weight-loss strategies. Think of the health problems those dumb fat morons will have in later life from losing the weight the way they did. Probably more than if they'd just kept it on.

The Daily Mail has published this map on their website with the title "Rare 400 year old map shows China as the centre of the World":

How does it depict China as the centre of the world? Seems like the North Pole is the centre to me.

China is number 1 on the map. Not that this should be surprising, seeing as the map appears to be frigging Chinese, and the Chinese always referred to themselves as Chung Kuo: The Middle Kingdom. Still, the map doesn't frigging show China in the middle of the world anyway, you're right, making this about as comprehensible as the usual Daily Fail fare.

I think those numbers were added after the fact. The Daily Mail probably had an article with it that used them as references.

Yeah, it would be pretty weird to see the Chinese use the so-called Arabic numerals 400 years ago. :) And having them perfectly preserved to this day, unlike the rest of the map, would make it even more interesting.

I know you knew this already. I'm just saying.

The symbol next to the Arabic numeral 1 looks more like a Chinese 6 to me. (I play Mah-jong :smug:) EDIT: The one next to "2" looks like South. EDIT2: Just looked it up, it's not South... But it's not 2 either...

Is it wrong to laugh when you get spam email to enlarge body parts you don't have?

EDIT: Also, is there any difference between legalization vs decriminalization? I googled it but I'm con fused.

I think I broke my toe. I didn't get in to see a doctor because ambulances started coming. :(

Why do some Russian surnames end with the suffix -sky while some Polish surnames end with the suffix -ski even though they are both pronounced "skee"?

I'm more confused with the Ukrainian version variously translated as.. "Skei" "Skiy" "Skyi" "Skie" etc.

Yes.
In a very simplified way:
Decriminalization means it is still illegal, but you essentially get a fine and no criminal record for doing it (think your typical speeding ticket).
Legalization makes it entirely legal.

Granted there are many levels and other considerations, such as enforcement if decriminalized (or even while illegal), and regulations present even if legal.

Is it possible for a German accent to cause "mammoth" to be pronounced s "mammooth"?

Is it possible for a German accent to cause "mammoth" to be pronounced s "mammooth"?

Is the th pronounced like the th in "the" or "that"?

If it does, then no, that sound does not exist in German.
