The Real World NES

Michael VIII Palaeologus (1259 - 1282) - alex994. Yes, I know I have compared him to Alexius Comnenus; but I think that he deserves this spot more. Possibly the most brilliant diplomat and Euro-centric emperor the Byzantines ever had; and a good general in his own right. I say Euro-centric because alex almost always starts a European-education program in his Chinas, doesn't he?

While I do appreciate the compliments upon myself indirectly with "the most brilliant diplomat" and etc, I am not usually euro-centric ;) The European-education programs in my China are only formed because usually my Chinas are decrepid and backwards, pragmaticism above all. If there was a strong China, no need at all :)

@LI: I'm only going by personal - limited - experience. Sorry, old bean.

John V Palaeologus (1341 - 1391) - ~Darkening~. Really, the Segu/John V comparisons sort of work, a little bit. Maybe he'd be better as one of the two Andronici. Maybe not. I'll have to think about that one. Sorry, Darkening.

Ouch. First, The Emperor in Segu is still the ultimate authority in the land. Second, if anything, I haven't paid anyone off. I don't do that kind of thing. Nor have I really appealed to anyone for help- I tried with one person, but I didn't really expect that one to work through. Nor did I offer to submit to anyone.

The impoverished thing works a bit, but what do you expect? I did what I had to do. I was surronded by the guy- I'm shocked at how many people found that move stupid. Would you guys prefer me to sit still and watch as Segu was swallowed up whole by France? I did what I had to do.

Quite understood. Both times you've fought me I've either been in a hideously weakened state (post-Ottoman Turkey, NES2 V) or had to go on a vacation (NES2 VI). I believe I would have held out well in that NES had it not been for that stupid trip. :grr:

Yeah, I mentioned that vacation bit.
and is cursed with some of the worst times to take a vacation in the history of the universe.
Didn't you have another vacation when Thlayli attacked you in NES2 V?

Well, I only had my defensive plans on the first turn, so I technically didn't fight him. Then I signed peace, and he attacked me again (I was on vacation after sending that order set). I was gone for the fatal turn.

Now that I think it over, it's amazing I still trust Thlayli...

Yes I got Nero, a strange psychotic man that possibly started a fire and then rebuilt the city of Rome as well as a great military campaigner.

Now if I could just get my fiddle.....

I dont think myself as a good general....I easily think I'm the worst general around here, partly one reason because I dont have the willlpower and stamina for multi-pm orders.

The plans had been worked out with France in turn 1, you see.

Well that explains why they failed. ;)

Cleric, trust me, you are - in the modern age only, ofcourse (note, this impression is based on your NES2 III orders) - one of the better generals around here, though maybe not of the best. You just never saw the orders I get sometimes...

I've always wondered, das, who you would rank as the best generals on the NES forums...say compare them to the Great Captains of History or so. (A generally accepted list is: Cyrus the Great, Alexander the Great, Hannibal Barca, Julius Caesar, Belisarius, Heraclius, Genghis Khan, Dom Affonso de Albuquerque, Yi Sung-Sin, Gustavus Adolphus, Frederick the Great, Napoleon, Nelson, Lee, Grant, and von Moltke the Elder. This is a slightly Americanized list, though - appearing in the Dupuy Encyclopedia, and many, many other first-rank generals could appear therein, like Marlborough or Turenne.)

I ask you because a) I'm a pretty bad judge of skill and character and b) you have some of the most experience modding of anyone on the forums, and know what basically everyone uses for plans, basic strats always employed, etc.

Exactly: the Great Captains were from vastly different time periods; there ought be someone for everyone. I mean, the Roman Emperor idea came out of me memorizing every single one a few months ago (from Augustus to Dragases; Holy Roman emperors don't count ;)), but this would be a better comparison opportunity.
