The Succession Game

The beginning: Dido Arexander II died a peaceful death, and his successor was selected. The new Dido named himself after the original founder of Japanese Carthage Dido Pydgie, just as Dido Pydgie named himself after the original founder of Carthage itself. Thus was crowned Dido Pydgie II.
Culture: A policy of legalism was adopted, encouraging the construction of cultural centers in the country's major cities.

Science: Many technologies were researched during his reign. Firstly projects initiated by Dido Arexander II aimed at instating a new currency were completed short after his rise to power. He subsequently turned his eye towards Drama and Poetry to improve the small nation's unsophisticated culture. The National CollegeThereafter, engineering was researched, in order to form a trade route between New Carthage (Nagoya) and New Utique (Tsuruga). Subsequently, civil service to allow international open borders agreements. And funds are currently being directed toward guilds RO strengthen our nations economy

Economy: The International Demographics Committee (directed by somebody named Computer) ranked Carthage highest in GNP and lowest in nothing. Dido Pydgie II sent off two new cargo ships, one from New Utique to Washington, and one from New Carthage to Sukhothai. Siam also established a land trade route from Sukhothai to New Carthage. Dido Pydgie II also hinted interest in obtaining M'banza-Kongo as allies, once 1000 lb of gold are collected.

Military: Both Japan and America have been moving their troops near carthage's borders for hundreds of years, and Carthaginians continue to grow more uncomfortable. Dido Arexander II left a quinquereme, a spearman, and a composite bowman, and plans to train another quinquereme. The quinquereme was completed, and the Dido also stationed an African Forest Elephant on the Boston border. The spearman can be updated, but we'll need the comp bow or another military unit to take its place for that turn so that the Japanese settler can't move. It may be a good idea to settle there so that we don't have to worry about blocking Japanese settlers. It may ruin our relationship, though.

OOC: Take a look at the last sentence of Economy. That's one of my suggestions. Because it will help our military, it is strategically positioned to hold off invaders from the north, and it seems our best chance at victory would be diplomatic. Yes. I think we should go for a diplo victory. That's just my opinion though. Also, whoever is next should check where the quinqueremes are and reset they movements, they've just been going back and forth between New Carthage and New Utique.
We are about average in everything besides culture perhaps. And we have a strong economy from all the trade routes and plantations. Just watch out, because both Japan and America are massing on our borders halfheartedly.

Actually, why are we blocking that Japanese settler? I don't think we need to anymore, because there is no way they can settle there.

I have to agree, the time to block the settler has well passed. I don't see any space around Sydney to settle, let him go... ;)

When Dido Pydgie passed away in 150AD the throne was claimed by Gurra Uticus IX who took the new royal title Dido Gurra II. The citizens of Nagoya were not so happy with the new Dido, as they remember what the last Dido of the Uticus family had done with the nation back in the days the city was still called Carthage.

However, the citizens of Tsuruga celebrated this occasion with joy and even further. A weird religious sect took the Carthaginian fertility rites to a new level of crazy and in the name of the new Dido they sacrificed a year's worth of grain and carried out an edict changing the name of their city to Tsu'Gurra.

On the other side of the nation, the Spearmen stationed to block off Japanese settlers were commanded to leave the site and come back to the capital.

In 225AD, the Guilds system was finally in place after years of research begun back in the days of Dido Pydgie II and scientists started exploring the concepts of Chivalry.

A few years later a caravan of traders travels to the city state of M'banza Kongo, accompanied by the Carthaginian prince Putchuco, rumored to be the one to take over the throne when Dido Gurra's time was over. M'banza Kongo were pleased with the Carthaginian procession and when handed over a gift of 500 gold they agreed to be close allies with our kingdom.

In Nagoya a cargo ship was constructed and sent on a trading route to Sukothai bringing Siamese riches to the people. In the same year, a Gems mine is finished just north of Nagoya bringing in even more luxuries.

The Japanese found the city of Tokyo to the west of Sydney, and in the same year a new Settler is seen just outside our borders.

In 375AD our declaration of friendship with America ends, and Washington politely says no when we ask to renew it... Tsu'Gurra finishes construction on the aqueduct and the crazy sect decides to build a shrine in the city.

Our Quinqueremes explore new areas on the map after signing Open Borders agreements with Assyria and Greece.

In 475AD the Shrine is done and both cities need new projects. Tsu'Gurra starts building walls for protection and cultural Dido Gurra II demands a Writer's Guild to be assembled in Nagoya. Landed Elite policy is adopted to provide more food to these coming writers, future glory of our nation!

The Quinquereme up north discovers the new nation of Portugal and outside of their capital Lisbon a peninsula that seems to be uninhabited. Dido Gurra starts having crazy ideas about sending a party of settlers out to claim those far away pearls but dies before mentioning it to anyone else, leaving the throne to his heir Putchuco.

Out of character: We're researching Theology right now, my idea was that we could go Education for more science and maybe Banking for Forbidden Palace in case we go Patronage as our next policy. Just an idea from me though. Education will be good whatever we do though.

I'm a litte tired now so I have probably forgot something I wanted to say but meh. :p We have quite some gold so I bought a few more units to expand our military. Watch out for Washington who doesn't want to be friends anymore.

Great play by everyone, we seem to be excellently balanced.

I believe we are at a very crucial moment, so I wanted to get everybody's input on what to look after next. Here's my feel:
- both Washington and Japan are knocking at our doors. It's just a matter of time until one (or BOTH!) come kicking in said door.
- we could bribe Askia to attack Japan
- we could bribe Siam to attack Washington
- if either war opens an opportunity to take a city (Boston or Osaka) we could come to the rescue... :)
- with the extremely tight landscape here war is inevitable and my concern is we get caught in one from both sides.
- I'd say our forces are good to swoop in and take a city when the respective party has been weakened, but by far not big enough for anything else.
Other thoughts?

Can Quinqueremes attack land units, cities?

Our military council tells us we have bigger forces than: Songhai, Dutch, Syrian, Portuguese.
But the following are stronger: Siam, Hunnic
Same strength: Greek

Yes, you noticed this leaves out both Japan and Washington...

Demographics, we can see that Washington does in fact have the largest standing army, much bigger than ours.
We're first in Tech, although not by much.

As for the Dropbox pics and Savegames: I'll put at least the save games in the vault here. But if it were me I would look at that SSL problem and not do any internet banking in the mean time... ;)

Yeah, I was afraid of a war coming every time I clicked Next Turn after our DOF with Washington had ended and he didn't want to sign a new one... I don't think we have to be too afraid of Washington's forces though, because of two things:
- the rough terrain will make it hard for him to move troops into our lands, if we build a few more units and station along the border, together with units gifted from M'banza-Kongo and maybe buying one or two with all the gold we have we could defend our borders quite good.
- M'banza-Kongo themselves will be a good defense as they're situated right in between Washington/Nagoya/Boston as our ally.

Quinqueremes can attack cities but Oda wouldn't give me a reasonable Open Borders deal so I couldn't bring the ones we have home to Nagoya. We could take them off exploring and up/down to Tsu'Gurra though if Washington has a fleet there, and build a new Quinq. in Nagoya for possible Boston attack? Siam could probably do a good job on weakening that city and then the new Quinqs could attack.

Askia would probably like to take out that Tokyo city and that could move Oda's attention to the west and away from us.

The Two Towers (or towering neighbors...)

And as the people of Carthage thanked their previous leader Gurra for his time devoted to the country, the search for a new leader began...
Someone later said there was a guy standing at a street corner looking antsy, but that couldn't be true... or could it?

They asked the guy what he remembered from the old days in Carthage, and all he could mumble was 'Putchuco'. And so they called him Putchuco II, .... not knowing what they let into their houses...

T141: It all began with M'Banga dropping their allied status. :O
Before anyone could panic, the scientists discovered Theology.
Could this be attributed to the grand previous leader?

As it turns out the new leader had a knack for showmanship, or so he renamed the two cities to: Tsuruga, the true and only, and Na'Putcha, the center of the universe!
The new king also ordered (in his infinite wisdom) to buy a Knight in Tsuruga, and research Machinery for he wanted to see how a 'crossbowman' could hit an enemy from 1000ft away.
As Putchuco II was a slightly less patient ruler he wanted results, and he wanted them FAST! Education was so far in the future...

The name Putchuco seemed to have struck a nerve with the Washingtonians as they came running and offered Open Borders! We graciously accepted.

T142: Putchuco II ordered to buy an Aqueduct in Na'Putcha as he wanted to bath more often. As the Writer's Guild was built in Na'Putcha he also ordered there to be built a Market, as his wife wanted to go 'shopping'!

T143: Through the grape vine we heard that Putchuco was relentlessly trying to bribe Askia into attacking Japan and Siam to attack Washington. Neither of which seemed to have worked, since the lands of Carthage remained at peace and so did the lands around them.
Askia came and asked for open Borders with a sweet deal, offering Horses and Iron with it.

T144-147: Quiet times, some might say... boring...

T148: Putchuco II was so bored - some say - that he signed just about anything that came across his desk, e.g. buying a Garden in Na'Putcha. The things you do to keep your women happy...

T149: Siam must've heard about the new Garden and wanted Open Borders to check them out.

T150: Knight in Tsuruga built -> change to Barracks (would it have been better the other way round?)
Market in Na'Putcha done -> Quinqereme

T151: Knight from M'Banza

T152: Machinery researched, starting on Education now
Upgrade all the CBs across the land to Crossbowmen!

T153: Quinq. in Na'Putcha -> start Nat'l Epic

T154: Siam wants war with William. We tell we like dutch cheese, sand dunes and 'pannekoeken'. His sad, sad face...
Restarted a caravan to transport 4 Food to Tsuruga.
Siam comes back to offer a Research Agreement for 300€, they must've liked our Garden!

T155: A Great Writer is born!
Barracks done in Tsuruga, we have them start on a Colosseum.

T156: a Great Scientist is born!
We ask him to finish Education and start on Metal Casting.

T158: Metal Casting done, right into Physics!
Na'Putcha switches from Nat'l Epic to Workshop, and so does Tsuruga, switching Colosseum to Workshop! Future kings will have to remember that !!!

The last years of Putchuco II were quiet years, even by his measures...

And his tenure ended just as it began, Carthage was still standing.

No need to apologize, bro. Actually don't apologize. The game is definitely not the priority. I wish her a return to good health.

All right, well, given that it would be Arexander's turn right now, I'm kind of bored, Pydgie asked me to do this like a week and a half ago in PM, and nobody has said no, I'm going for it.

Arexander, I really your mom is ok. Good luck, and take all the time you need to help her.

EDIT: Well, for some weird reason civ V is not opening on my computer. It should be fine, I'll restart my computer at some point and probably play it tomorrow. Weird that it isn't working though.
Played my turn. I think having absolutely no clue what was going on before hurt me. Some good and some bad stuff happened. This should be an interesting situation for the next person who plays though. Do it right and I think we can come out of this really well. I'll do a write up tomorrow, or maybe tonight, depending on my mood.
