The Succession Game

The Kingdom of Carthage was in crisis. Arexander, our noble soldier and national hero, was about to take the throne when disaster struck from across the seas, and possibly across another universe too. The great Arexander left on a noble cause, but left Carthage to fend for itself. Anarchy flooded the streets, and a newly appointed military commander from another nation by the name of Redwings1340 declared martial law to keep Carthage in order. Redwings1340 was not a popular choice to become leader, and was unknown by the Carthaginian people at the time. This was fine though, as he had little knowledge of the Carthaginian people as well. He would rule with an iron fist though, with the purpose of building up the Cartheginian cities to become the most technologically advanced and productive cities in the world.

In the year 1000 AD, Redwings1340 mobilized the great Cartheginian treasury to buy a university in our nation's capital. Our first declaration of friendship was also formed with the great nation of portugal, some nation to the north that the military leader knew very little about. Even under martial law, these sweeping changes in public policy left people unsatisfied with the Cartheginian political situation, and to keep protesters at bay, Redwings1340 instituted a new monarchy (social policy) in Carthage, with him being the first king. In order to celebrate the introduction of Islam in Tsurga, Redwings1340 also ordered the construction of a monestary in that city.

Renaissance Era (for some)
The next 50 years went by without incident, and in 1070, William of the Netherlands boasted of discovering an amazing technology that would summon in a new era. As if on cue, the vast Carthaginian military training that came from Martial law introduced the concept of sending spies to other nations to steal their technology, such as sending one to William... to steal his renaissance tech. So far our spy has not reported back with any revolutionary technologies, but he claims he is getting close.

Back at home, Redwings1340 focused on production and science. A university was built in Tsuruga (to get one in both cities), workshops were built in both cities, and an Ironworks was constructed in Tsuruga. A national epic was also constructed in the capital, which has inspired people to reach their potential greatness. By 1200, Carthage had developed a new printing press system that should allow them to construct a massive leaning tower, assuming nobody else steals our plans for it, of course.

Diplomacy
The reign of Redwings1340 was a very isolationist one, with that costing him in the end. Many times he would look the the north and south towards America and Japan, respectively, and scheme plans to either attack or distract them. Multiple times he would attempt to bribe them in to wars, or bribe others to declare war on them, but to no avail, the asking price was too high in his opinion. He would deny and sell open borders to various civs, as he had very little reason to ask for them in his reign.

Still, even though he was passive and isolationist with other civilizations, this did not stop him from maintaining ties to smaller civilizations. Carthage would lose its relationship to M'Banza Kongo, but would gain an alliance with Bratslavia. This new alliance would inspire artists and writers everywhere in Carthage.

Potential Disaster and the end of military rule
As a result of Redwings1340s isolationist policies, in 1170, Japan and America decided to declare war against their inland neighbor. While the war has not gotten too intense yet, America has captured one of our workers near the border, and we have suffered minor pillaging. We also lost two trade routes in the process of the DoW, but have otherwise managed to fight off the small attacking forces that have come at us so far.

While losses so far have been minimal in this two front war, the populace is afraid of the might of the two civilizations. In 1780, writer Jorge Isaacs wrote, ""I fell asleep sorrowful, filled with a vague foreboding of coming trouble." The population only stood for military rule because they thought it would keep them safe. In 1200 AD, Carthaginian riots finally forced out the military leader Redwings1340, and instilled a civilian government. At this point it is unclear who is going to win elections in this time of peril, but CaesarKyros is a strong political candidate who inspires trust from the people.

Other Notes
So, we're in a two front war. This isn't necessarily the best position in the world, but we do have some stuff going for us. For starters, we have a nice military. I upgraded everything to knights, but I don't think we have enough of a force to be too aggressive without some more building up of the military. We probably could be aggressive fighting one opponent, but we want to make sure we survive against two opponents first. We do have a great economy (we did before the war at least), and enough surplus happiness to build a military and take some cities without going down, so that could be a good option for us, should we decide to do that.

That isn't our only option here though. We also have a relatively early printing press technology, so I think we could get the Leaning Tower of Pisa if we went for it now (in our second city, our production hub). Our primary city could take care of military for us, and maybe a worker to replace our lost one if we're going to be defensive.

We have a social policy coming up, and I see a lot of potential good options here. 2 more policies in tradition and we can get +15% growth in cities, which would be awesome. If you start feeling threatened, oligarchy would not necessarily be bad right now, and the wonder building policy would be pretty nice for the leaning tower/future wonders. Alternatively, opening commerce would be nice because we have a really rich capital, and patronage would be cool because our good economy would allow us to support a lot of city states. We also probably want to get astronomy tech soon, and I think the exploration opener is generally underrated on these threads, and works very well with Carthage. Our second city also is on a mountain, and we have units that are ready to upgrade to Caravels, which provides another couple incentives for the tech. Mid game cross continent city spam could even be viable with our UA and on this map if you want to try that. Oh, and I haven't even mentioned rationalism yet as a possibility (it's more boring than the others, but probably just as if not more powerful)... I probably wouldn't recommend more liberty though. Not yet at least. We don't have enough cities for that.

CaesarKyros, although very influential and charming, was a strange character. The populace thought his name to sound Roman in origin, some thought he was a Roman spy on a quest to destroy the mighty Carthaginian Empire from the inside. He quickly proved himself a capable ruler by discovering new technologies to expand Carthage's might, attaining wisdom from the goddess of protection, bringing death to his enemies, discovering "new" lands, and just being a swell guy.

Technology
Saerus quickly saw the possible advantage from the water near his foes' cities. He quickly urged his best researchers to devise a way to sail into the deep water. Saerus talked with his lead engineer and discovered that constructing the Oxford University would increase research speed of astronomy, the technology that allows boats to go into deep water. Saerus was about to construct this magnificent building when the goddess of protection warned him against it, saying that after you research astronomy you can finish the Oxford University and discover the secrets of navigation instantly. Saerus did this, and when he upgraded his lowly galleass into a mighty frigate, he found it was made of "steel", and fired big balls from "cannons" using propulsion from "gunpowder". Saerus' mind was amazed, and he thanked the goddess for the mythical cannon beast.

War
The battle had become a stalemate, the two fronts had no chance of breaking the line of knights, crossbowmen, and pikemen. However, Saerus thought that an attack on either foe would be too risky, so he set up defensive positions along the enemies' borders to contain his enemy. When the technology of frigates become known to the whole of Carthage, many frigates entered production. No one knew what the frigate was made of, they just happened to be built after a few turns, whatever "turns" are. He sent a frigate to the city-state ally of Bratislava, where the Japanese had been concentrating most of their war efforts. When the frigate arrived near Bratislava, all of the Japanese troops were dead or had retreated already. Saerus ordered the frigate to scan the horizon, and soon they found a Japanese settler being escorted by two triremes.

The frigate's crew pulled to the edge of the coast, and ordered a full broadside on one of the escorts. It barely survived and retreated back to Kyoto. The other Trireme, however, pulled up next to the massive frigate, and tried to attack, but there was a barrier that prevented the boat from moving 5 丈 into the deep water, and it died a very noble death after watching the settler get blasted to pieces by big balls. On the Japanese-Carthaginian borders, tensions rose after a group of pikemen reported seeing what looked like Japanese soldiers with a curved blade and funny-looking armor. Saerus ordered two crossbowmen regiments to fire, but the strange warrior appeared unharmed.

Saerus feared that his lack of technology to combat these warriors would be his down-fall. He was faced with a choice -- to research the idea of building a school for the public, or "YOLOswag" and beeline destroyers or battleships, which were apparently more mythical than the frigate. Before he could order his researchers to begin, he passed away, and his last words were: "Hey, you need a good land army,Build more frigates, conquer coastal cities, and keep exploring the seas in search of new lands. I will be back when I am needed most". And just as he came, he left the same way- being a swell guy.

When frigates were being produced, a man known as Pydgie descended from the sky and said the four most powerful and philosophical words the world will ever know: "It is my turn". Carthaginian Writers were confused at this, mostly because no one was grand enough to understand the four words. (No great writers were born)

Last Minute Thoughts

I am not sure there is any land other than the mainland, and that is very limited.
Spies keep stealing techs from our cities, so I put our spy in Na' Putcha.
I was going to build more cargo ships, but I needed more frigates to attack coastal cities.
If you attack coastal cities, bring many frigates and one caravel. Bomb the city with frigates and attack with the caravel when the defenses are at 0 hp.

Cool! Can I join then? If so, when would I start?

Well, we haven't heard from Pydgie and neither from Gurra, and I would like to have their buy-in. Other than that I think we have to show Wahington and Japan of what we're made of! ;)

I think it's too late. We've already both played.

Sorry if we weren't supposed to!

I think it's too late. We've already both played.

Sorry if we weren't supposed to!

Who is both? :crazyeye:

I left a PM for Pydgie, but no reply and it appears that both Pydgie and Gurra haven't posted in the forum for >12days. Hope they're both OK, and also OK if we just continue.

@Ceasar, why don't you go ahead and play a round of 20turns, if you haven't done so already.

Pls remember the buildings I had queue in my last turn before switching to Workshop. It would be a shame to have lost those :c5production:
T158: Metal Casting done, right into Physics!
Na'Putcha switches from Nat'l Epic to Workshop, and so does Tsuruga, switching Colosseum to Workshop! Future kings will have to remember that !!!

OK, sometimes I'm a little thick... LOL
Just saw Ceasar's post on his turns...

Since it appears the three of us are the last men standing, I will go ahead and play next.
I hope the others will forgive us one day...

Return of the Putch - again

And when the little people of Carthage didn't know what to do next, where to turn next, ... that's when they made their biggest mistakes, ... errr, grandest decisions!
Turning to Putchuco! It was now in the third generation, and the Carthagians still didn't know better. :king:

And so it began...

T200: Putchuco schmoozed Siam into going to war with Washington! For lousy 6$/turn!! The joy ... of having people killing other people... no, wait. Hmm.
The newly re-appointed king also wanted to go all out, focus the war on one enemy, and on only one side of the continent. So he recalled all Frigates to the homeland, cancelled the Frigate building in Tsuruga (switched back to the almost ready Colloseum), moved the troops away from Washington and Osaka, towards... BOSTON!!

T201: Enough money to buy... err.... ah! Buy a Frigate!

T202: Frigate built in Na'Putcha (I can't believe the city is still called by this name... :p ), start building another Frigate!
The folks are adopting a new policy and in hindsight we can hardly believe how tough the struggle between Aristocracy and Oligarchy was. The wonder builders finally won!

T203: JAPAN OFFERS PEACE! And with a sweet deal no less. We accept generously... ;)
Spoiler :

Directly after this Washington comes and offers an even sweeter deal!!!
What's happening here?! Could it be the frigates sailing all around, or the new focus on one side, are their getting tired of war, was it Siam install fear into their hearts?
Of course it could only be one thing, the craziest kings of all was back, Putchuco... :mischief:
Spoiler :

T204: Putchuco has the war efforts focus exclusively on Boston now!
Oh, and Siam is also closing in. If we want that city we better be QUICK!

T205: CARTHAGE TAKES BOSTON!!!

T206: We make peace with Washington, and with a very sweet deal, lots of money, marble etc. Putchuco wanted New York, but Washington wouldn't give in. Bummer.
William wants us to enter the war with Siam, crazy?
We reject embassies with Washington, this scrupulous tech stealer...
Spoiler :

T207: Great Writer

T208: Economics!
Na'Putcha is switched from Frigate to Windmill (we'll wait with the ship for the next war)
Tsuruga is switched to build PISA!

T209: We are -1 on horses (hm, what does that mean, one of the Knights is walking?!), so we remove one of the Knights.
We annex Boston after their revolt phase, buy a Courthouse and have them started on a Granary.

T211: William claims Siam is plotting on us. We think he is full of it.

T214: No embassy with Japan. Liars.

T215: Greece wants us to join war with Attila, we reject.
What's going on here? They all want us to wage war all across the lands??

T220: Times have quieted down a lot since the big(?) war with japan+USA.

Spoiler :

Spoiler :

Pisa is coming on line shortly, let's hope nobody beats us to it.
And then we have to think how we're actually going to WIN this thing...!
Science? Domination? Culture?

Hi, I was in bed with a nasty flu for the last couple of days but I'm back up again and could play the next set of turns. I'll read up on what has happened and can probably play some time this weekend. :)

Excellent! Welcome back, glad to hear you're better now.
It's also a perfect timing. I hope I didn't get us too much into trouble... ;)

If I may, here's a temporary turn list until Arexander and Pydgie are back:

1) Gurra09 (next)
2) RedWings1340
3) CaesarKyros
4) Putchuco

Nice work! Yeah, I definitely didn't know as much about the Carthage's past as I probably should have when I played my turn. It messed me up diplomatically, as well as strategically a little bit. Still, we're decently behind in a lot of demographics, including science, and we haven't exactly beelined techs to get in this position artificially either.

We have a lot of money and a really good economy again. I'd recommend some more cargo ships to celebrate this time of peace and buying some city states in the process. Also remember that Tsurga can get an observatory if you haven't gotten that yet! We may just want to buy it actually. Observatories are awesome.

I"m really excited about this game. :)

Very good! My last turns also got me fired up again.
I cant stop plotting and planning in my head on how we can win this game...

This might be one of those games where we constantly have to watch all other countries to see if they are closing in on one of the victory conditions.

FYI, we're using an Explorer Map of Japan, so it's very likely that there isn't any other land than the main islands of Japan. That's in part why I stopped the expeditions into the japanese sea and the pacific ocean... ;)

Just for the fun of it I looked at the google maps and the city names we might want to be using... ;)
Spoiler :

Crowded map with Carthage and not much land outside of the main continent? That's kind of disappointing. Having map with a ton of costal cities is nice, but Carthage is really best when they can expand a lot more than we could.

On the other hand, if we have met every civ, domination or diplo might be more feasible/easy than I thought. I was kind of counting on being able to settle on other continents and islands though. After we get an observatory, buying out all the city states might be a good idea. There aren't all that many of them, and our economy is our best asset.
