The Sumerian Empire

Yes, I did unfortunately start the game with all victory conditions on, when I had wanted it to be just conquest. I was hoping no one would ask me this question, then I could have one of my cities quietly build it and just not report it in the story.:D

The Battle of Corinth
Military Advisor- Sir, the Arab city of Corinth has been destroyed! Would you like to read the preliminary report on the assault?
King Gudea- Yes, I would. Did it go as well as Mycenae?
Military Advisor- Here it is. It looks like it was a much tougher fight.

From: Operational Commander-3rd Army Group

My King, it is my duty to inform you that the Arab city of Corinth has been flattened and the Arab heartland now lays open to us. Never have I sent men under my command into so grueling and costly a battle, as this one was. I will give you a brief outline of the battle here and forward a detailed account when time permits.

After the 4th Army Group fell, a massive Arab counter-attack left me with a lone division-the 3rd Armor. I pulled back my AG and fortified on a mountain some 50 miles north of Corinth. Later, with the arrival of two new tank divisions, the 7th & 8th Armor, we assembled and moved south. By the end of that day we were about 5 miles from Corinth and we stopped there and dug in for the night. The offensive was to begin at 0800 the next morning, but the Arabs felt they wanted to disrupt our rest. Even though sentries were able to alert the camp to the impending attack, the darkness caused great confusion and the Arabs knowing the area were able to move in quickly with their tanks. With one of our off-shore destroyers launching a star-shell, we were then able to see and repulse the attack.
arab_night_attack.png

But the Arabs had already done a great deal of damage and fled as quickly as they had shown up. This sneak attack destroyed 8 of our tank squadrons(over 150 tanks); most of them from the 7th Armored Division. We had lost half a division, before we even came into sight of the city. The Arabs had evened the odds a little with this attack. We were now down to two and a half divisions and our intelligence placed the Corinth garrison strength at one infantry division, a regiment of tanks and various other elements including tank & halftrack armies.

The next morning the 3rd AG moved to within sight of the city and opened up with a massive artillery barrage, targeting the outskirts of the lower city. Surprisingly, there was no answer from the Arabs. An airstrike was then called in to bomb the lower city and this time there was a response. The Arabs filled the sky with anti-aircraft fire and managed to shoot down two of our bomber squadrons. The bombing raid did little damage, but they were able to destroy the city harbor.

In days long past, Corinth was a border town of the Greek empire. For a long time it was just a walled fortress on a hill, to guard against an Arabian invasion. It eventually fell to Arabia and in the centuries since it has grown into a city that reaches out from the base of the hill for about a half-mile, including up to the waters edge. This lower part of the city is what the artillery and bombers were focused on, hoping to hit any defenders there.

Our lead elements were ordered to advance and as they approached and entered the outskirts, there was not even a sound from the Arabs. We knew most of the lower city had been abandoned by the civilian population and that there had to be an enemy presence there. There was and we know now they were intentionally holding back, drawing us in. Even knowing this possibility, there was no place else for us to go but straight into any possible ambushes. This city was the last bastion of defense leading to the Arab core and therefore it must be destroyed.

About the time all elements of the 8th Armor had entered the lower city, they began to encounter fierce machinegun & mortar fire from the surrounding buildings. We had to take building after building to secure an area, before moving forward. When the 3rd & 8th Armored Divisions were entirely inside the lower city, all chaos broke loose. First, dozens of buildings were detonated with explosives, set up to collapse them into the street and thereby blocking it off. They were attempting to guide us in a certain direction, into their fire-lanes and we had no choice but to fight our way thru with brute force.

The deeper we got into the city, the more gun emplacements, MG nests and pillboxes there were. The worst was hidden snipers on almost every rooftop, picking off our protective infantry left and right. When some infantry would go down and the flanks of a tank were exposed, an Arab would run out with a satchel charge. These charges would destroy the tank treads and the tank would then become immobilized. That particular squadron or battalion would then come to a dead stop and then an Arab artillery barrage would come in.

All this time my HQ unit, the remainder of the 7th Armor and all of our artillery had stayed at the edge of the lower city. The artillery had been targeting areas in front of our advancing units, but ultimately doing little damage to the heavily-entrenched enemy. The 3rd & the 8th were far enough in to receive attacks at their rear, so I decided to send the reserves(the 7th) in to prevent this.

Not too long after that, the 3rd Armored Division found a side street that was not blocked. The buildings the Arabs has attempted to collapse into the street, had instead fallen in the wrong direction. The 3rd quickly exited the Arab 'containment' zone and then they were able to start attacking the Arabs from behind. All of their pillboxes and MG nests were pointed in towards the corridor they had hoped we were contained in. Leaving the 8th Armor inside this corridor, the Arabs could now be hit from the front and back. This put the remainder of the lower city defenses into confusion and some of them began to retreat towards the hill. Our artillery went to work and cut the Arab retreat to ribbons.

We had now made it thru the lower city, only to find an Arab tank army, a halftrack army and 8 tank squadrons waiting on the slopes of the hill. These two armies and every gun & artillery in the upper city, opened up on us. We were soon facing a withering wall of lead. The 3rd Army Group had started the day with 32 tank squadrons between the three divisions. Bashing their way thru the Arab trap in the lower city had reduced this to 25 tank squadrons.

The two Arab armies were dug in and proved very formidable. The 7th Armor ran right up on them, facing them at point-blank range. This caused the Arab artillery to stop for fear of hitting their own troops. The regiment of Arab tank squadrons then came out from hiding behind the two armies and soon there was a mass sea of inter-mingled tanks. Nine Sumerian tank squadrons were turned into burning hulks, while taking out the two Arab armies and the regiment of support tanks.

Meanwhile our artillery & bombers had continually pounded on the wall surrounding the upper city or as I call it-the old city. This wall, although it was 15-feet thick, was from ancient times and crumbled easily under the heavy bombardment, creating a large gap in the wall. The shaking ground even caused one section of the wall to collapse on its own, sending almost an entire company of Arab infantry falling to their deaths. The 8th Armor, which was the most intact after all this, went straight for the gap in the wall. The dozens of burning tanks on the slope provided perfect cover for our infantry and they were able to move up the hill without loss.

The 8th Armor charged thru the gap to confront the remaining Arab infantry, which were still almost a regiment strong. They did not expect us to make it this far, so there was no coordination in their defense of the old city. Not that they needed it, given that it was once again house-to-house fighting at close range. The ancient streets were very narrow and our tanks could not maneuver well, requiring our infantry to take the lead. The firefights to take out the remaining Arab infantry lasted well into the next day.
s920-corinth_razed.png

As I said before, the way to the Arab interior lays open to us. But, we will not be able to capitalize on it immediately, due to our great losses. Including the Arab night attack, we lost 28 tank squadrons and the 7th Armored Division was completely destroyed. This is the largest garrison we have ever fought against and it consisted of the following- 17 Arab infantry companies, 8 tank squadrons, 2 marine companies, 2 guerilla irregulars, 1 machinegun company, a tank army and a halftrack army.

When all the men are rested, the tanks repaired and enough reinforcements arrive we will move into the Arab core. Day by day we move closer to personally taking revenge on Abu for the assassin attack he sent against you.

King Gudea- That was very costly. How long before the 1st and 3rd Army Groups can be replenished?
Military Advisor- It should not take very long, my King. All of our cities are working very hard to build tanks and train infantry. Morale is high, even with these grievous casualties.

Military Advisor- The southern front has moved up near the ruins of Corinth and has been reduced from 6 down to 2 cities. The garrisons of these six cities have also been combined and moved up to the front.
King Gudea- This will be a lot more manageable!

Wonderfully detailed update Takeo! Outstanding!

Out of interest how did you create the light source in the first picture for the attack on Corinth?

It is one of the illumination effects from Paintshop Pro.

@502nd PIR- I'll post a worldmap on the next update.

1818 A.D.
Military Advisor- My King, Alden and his mercenary army have suddenly offered up their services to fight exclusively against the Egyptians. The reason being that the son of Alden's senior lieutenant, whom was serving in one of our infantry garrisons on the Egyptian border, was killed recently in an Egyptian attack.
King Gudea- Tell General Alden that instead of fighting for free like he originally offered, he can keep all spoils from the Egyptian nation including Cleopatra's treasury.
Military Advisor- I will inform him.

1820 A.D.
Military Advisor- The Hittites & Arabs have both made beach landings behind our front lines. The Hittites landed a halftrack army and the Arabian transports dropped off 5 tank squadrons. This must be the last few tank squadrons the Arabs have left, cause Valrar has been hit non-stop by marine companies from their core.
s925-ai_beach_landings.png

Military Advisor- The 1st Marine Division cleared out the Hittite army and the 6th Armored Division pushed the Arabs back into the sea.
King Gudea- The 6th Armor has been very busy! How do they manage to commit to so much action?
Military Advisor- I have been giving them priority on all repairs, maintenance and reinforcements. Having the "liberators" protect our borders and repel enemy incursions has been very good for national morale. The 6th has attained almost celebrity status and I'm giving the people what they want.
King Gudea- Good job! Keep it up.

King Gudea- I want to know where all the Roman forces are currently located at. Have our spy steal their military plans.
Foreign Advisor- We have had only intermittent contact with our spy recently, cause enemy agents have been on his trail. This may be risky to try at this time.
King Gudea- I don't want to sound cold, but risk is part of his job description. We need to know where the Roman forces are concentrated the heaviest, so send him on the mission.

s929-steal_plans.png

Military Advisor- Now we won't have any info on them at all, at least until we send another agent in.
Foreign Advisor- I'll have the Intelligence Agency work on another insertion.
King Gudea- Well, it's better to be safe than sorry. I want the 1st Army Group brought up from the Arabian theatre, to repel the impending Roman attack. The 3rd AG will have to continue on their own, once they have been reinforced back up to 4 divisions. The 6th Armor can hold the southern border, along with bomber support, which will allow the 3rd AG to move towards the Arabian heartland.
Military Advisor- It will be done, my King.

1824 A.D.
Military Advisor- Those scientist guys have come up with a mobile SAM to replace our outdated flak batteries.
mobile_sam.png

King Gudea- Move some of these into Corsin immediately. Also, start construction on some of the new jet-powered fighters. I'm sure it will be quite fun for our fighter jockeys to run circles around enemy bombers.
Military Advisor- A number of jet squadrons are already being assembled, Commander.

King Gudea- You definately have my attention. Let me know more as soon as possible.

Military Advisor- The mercenaries are ready to head into Egypt. I have given them a little help by having our bombers take out the main Egyptian oil refinery. It was heavily protected by enemy fighters and we lost 3 bomber squadrons during the mission.

Military Advisor- The 3rd Army Group has been reinforced and was leaving our territory when another Arab marine force showed up.
s939-arab_marines.png

Military Advisor- The 6th Armored Division thrashed the Arab infantry & marines within our borders, but was unable to deal with any Arabs fortified outside our territory. Unfortunately, those fortified Arabs then attacked the 3rd AG from behind, while other Arab marines attacked from the front. Twenty Arab marine companies were able to destroy over half of the 12th Infantry Division, even though they were defending a fortress. It was a fortress we built there after destroying Fustat.
s953-marine_att_on_12th.png

1826 A.D.
Military Advisor- Sir, another Roman bombing raid has destroyed the Corsin market. The population of Corsin has begun to get very uncivil, cause food and other goods are now in very short supply. The Roman bombers paid the price, with 4 squadrons shot out of the sky by our SAM's.
King Gudea- See to it that neighboring cities send food shipments to Corsin and have the city marketplace rebuilt. Dedicate all available civil engineers to getting that done.
Domestic Advisor- Already on it, Great One.

* * * * * *

Military Advisor- Right on the heels of the bombing raid came a Roman force that was 37 tank squadrons strong. They came in all around Ambria and also just north of Bortras. The 1st Army Group took care of the problem, but we now have a great number of tanks in need of repair.
s945-rome_tanks.png

* * * * * *

Military Advisor- The mercenaries have wasted no time in destroying two Egyptian cities.
King Gudea- Good! Give them all the bomber support they need.

Great Job!

OPERATIONAL MESSAGE
From: Fleet Admiral Murano, Chief of the Sumerian Naval Staff
To: Prince Takeo, Historian Royal
T O P S E C R E T EYES ONLY
1. In the name of the Great King Gudea, the gods be with him and may his reign be long, Greetings to you.
2. Morale in the Navy is low. The officers and men of the fleet believe that their important contribution to the survival of the Sumerian nation has been under reported. I must agree with them since a scan of the media shows constant mention of the Army and the Air Force but little of the Navy. My permission is given to you to declassify now and in the future such naval exploits as you may wish to announce to the public.
3. Your influence over military affairs is legendary. Perhaps now is the time to begin a buildup of the Navy in anticipation of the final confrontations with Rome and the Hittites. I hardly need remind you that the Hittites are an island nation and that Rome is a nation divided in half by the great ocean. It is the Roman navy which connects them and ferries troops back and forth. Defeat the Roman navy and Rome becomes two weak countries instead of one strong one.
4. I also urge the the Military Department of Science and Technology to begin an investigation of the benefits of submarine warfare. We belive that such vessels may perhaps give us command of all the seas once and for all.
