From: Operational Commander-3rd Army Group
My King, it is my duty to inform you that the Arab city of Corinth has been flattened and the Arab heartland now lays open to us. Never have I sent men under my command into so grueling and costly a battle, as this one was. I will give you a brief outline of the battle here and forward a detailed account when time permits.
After the 4th Army Group fell, a massive Arab counter-attack left me with a lone division-the 3rd Armor. I pulled back my AG and fortified on a mountain some 50 miles north of Corinth. Later, with the arrival of two new tank divisions, the 7th & 8th Armor, we assembled and moved south. By the end of that day we were about 5 miles from Corinth and we stopped there and dug in for the night. The offensive was to begin at 0800 the next morning, but the Arabs felt they wanted to disrupt our rest. Even though sentries were able to alert the camp to the impending attack, the darkness caused great confusion and the Arabs knowing the area were able to move in quickly with their tanks. With one of our off-shore destroyers launching a star-shell, we were then able to see and repulse the attack.
But the Arabs had already done a great deal of damage and fled as quickly as they had shown up. This sneak attack destroyed 8 of our tank squadrons(over 150 tanks); most of them from the 7th Armored Division. We had lost half a division, before we even came into sight of the city. The Arabs had evened the odds a little with this attack. We were now down to two and a half divisions and our intelligence placed the Corinth garrison strength at one infantry division, a regiment of tanks and various other elements including tank & halftrack armies.
The next morning the 3rd AG moved to within sight of the city and opened up with a massive artillery barrage, targeting the outskirts of the lower city. Surprisingly, there was no answer from the Arabs. An airstrike was then called in to bomb the lower city and this time there was a response. The Arabs filled the sky with anti-aircraft fire and managed to shoot down two of our bomber squadrons. The bombing raid did little damage, but they were able to destroy the city harbor.
In days long past, Corinth was a border town of the Greek empire. For a long time it was just a walled fortress on a hill, to guard against an Arabian invasion. It eventually fell to Arabia and in the centuries since it has grown into a city that reaches out from the base of the hill for about a half-mile, including up to the waters edge. This lower part of the city is what the artillery and bombers were focused on, hoping to hit any defenders there.
Our lead elements were ordered to advance and as they approached and entered the outskirts, there was not even a sound from the Arabs. We knew most of the lower city had been abandoned by the civilian population and that there had to be an enemy presence there. There was and we know now they were intentionally holding back, drawing us in. Even knowing this possibility, there was no place else for us to go but straight into any possible ambushes. This city was the last bastion of defense leading to the Arab core and therefore it must be destroyed.
About the time all elements of the 8th Armor had entered the lower city, they began to encounter fierce machinegun & mortar fire from the surrounding buildings. We had to take building after building to secure an area, before moving forward. When the 3rd & 8th Armored Divisions were entirely inside the lower city, all chaos broke loose. First, dozens of buildings were detonated with explosives, set up to collapse them into the street and thereby blocking it off. They were attempting to guide us in a certain direction, into their fire-lanes and we had no choice but to fight our way thru with brute force.
The deeper we got into the city, the more gun emplacements, MG nests and pillboxes there were. The worst was hidden snipers on almost every rooftop, picking off our protective infantry left and right. When some infantry would go down and the flanks of a tank were exposed, an Arab would run out with a satchel charge. These charges would destroy the tank treads and the tank would then become immobilized. That particular squadron or battalion would then come to a dead stop and then an Arab artillery barrage would come in.
All this time my HQ unit, the remainder of the 7th Armor and all of our artillery had stayed at the edge of the lower city. The artillery had been targeting areas in front of our advancing units, but ultimately doing little damage to the heavily-entrenched enemy. The 3rd & the 8th were far enough in to receive attacks at their rear, so I decided to send the reserves(the 7th) in to prevent this.
Not too long after that, the 3rd Armored Division found a side street that was not blocked. The buildings the Arabs has attempted to collapse into the street, had instead fallen in the wrong direction. The 3rd quickly exited the Arab 'containment' zone and then they were able to start attacking the Arabs from behind. All of their pillboxes and MG nests were pointed in towards the corridor they had hoped we were contained in. Leaving the 8th Armor inside this corridor, the Arabs could now be hit from the front and back. This put the remainder of the lower city defenses into confusion and some of them began to retreat towards the hill. Our artillery went to work and cut the Arab retreat to ribbons.
We had now made it thru the lower city, only to find an Arab tank army, a halftrack army and 8 tank squadrons waiting on the slopes of the hill. These two armies and every gun & artillery in the upper city, opened up on us. We were soon facing a withering wall of lead. The 3rd Army Group had started the day with 32 tank squadrons between the three divisions. Bashing their way thru the Arab trap in the lower city had reduced this to 25 tank squadrons.
The two Arab armies were dug in and proved very formidable. The 7th Armor ran right up on them, facing them at point-blank range. This caused the Arab artillery to stop for fear of hitting their own troops. The regiment of Arab tank squadrons then came out from hiding behind the two armies and soon there was a mass sea of inter-mingled tanks. Nine Sumerian tank squadrons were turned into burning hulks, while taking out the two Arab armies and the regiment of support tanks.
Meanwhile our artillery & bombers had continually pounded on the wall surrounding the upper city or as I call it-the old city. This wall, although it was 15-feet thick, was from ancient times and crumbled easily under the heavy bombardment, creating a large gap in the wall. The shaking ground even caused one section of the wall to collapse on its own, sending almost an entire company of Arab infantry falling to their deaths. The 8th Armor, which was the most intact after all this, went straight for the gap in the wall. The dozens of burning tanks on the slope provided perfect cover for our infantry and they were able to move up the hill without loss.
The 8th Armor charged thru the gap to confront the remaining Arab infantry, which were still almost a regiment strong. They did not expect us to make it this far, so there was no coordination in their defense of the old city. Not that they needed it, given that it was once again house-to-house fighting at close range. The ancient streets were very narrow and our tanks could not maneuver well, requiring our infantry to take the lead. The firefights to take out the remaining Arab infantry lasted well into the next day.
As I said before, the way to the Arab interior lays open to us. But, we will not be able to capitalize on it immediately, due to our great losses. Including the Arab night attack, we lost 28 tank squadrons and the 7th Armored Division was completely destroyed. This is the largest garrison we have ever fought against and it consisted of the following- 17 Arab infantry companies, 8 tank squadrons, 2 marine companies, 2 guerilla irregulars, 1 machinegun company, a tank army and a halftrack army.
When all the men are rested, the tanks repaired and enough reinforcements arrive we will move into the Arab core. Day by day we move closer to personally taking revenge on Abu for the assassin attack he sent against you.
