The Thread Where We Discuss Guns and Gun Control

I shall never understand Americas fascination with guns. After countless school and mass shootings, their answer is more not less. And it flies in the face of basic logic. If you have 2 countries. Who dont particularly like each other. And you arm each of them to the teeth. Then the risk of war or violence is very high. But if you reduce the number of arms - like most international treaties try to do when they seek to de escalate conflicts - then the risk of violence, death and war diminishes. But many Americans fail to see that the exact same principle applies to arms and the general public. And are seemingly quite willing to continue to allow mass shootings on school campuses and elsewhere go unchecked. Its honestly baffling.

Polls show more Americans support increased gun control than the current situation.
The minority is well-organised and financed and a lot more fanatical about the issue than most Americans though.

This is of course true. But control doesnt equate to removal. Quite often "control" can just mean people cant buy automatic assault rifles. Which kind of misses the point IMO. Guns mean risk. And more guns means more risk. Which unfortunately is a lesson many Americans dont seem to understand.

Yeah American gun control efforts are superficial political theatre and that's just how it's going to be for the foreseeable future as there is practically zero support for generalized bans and confiscations.

So what? It's west virginia and they are also offering money and scholarships. In washington state, they are offering joints.

There is a guns and gun control thread you can take this to.

Did you see how fast it went away this cycle when the usual started up again? A huge amount of Democrats were first time buyers last year. This issue is cooked, criticism of slave peoples notwithstanding. :mischief:

So just found this out. In the States you can get a Covid vaccine AND a chance to win a shotgun or rifle. Its at times like this when I think that Americans are in a whole world of their own. Any other country this idea would either be ridiculed. Or even deemed outright dangerous to public safety (which it probably is). But America - nope - all is well. I just dont get it.

You have to know your target audience. Guns in WV, pot in WA. Sounds reasonable to me, I just hope it works.

It works enough it is worth doing. And it's sort of fun at the same time, nice when that happens.

So, wouldn't like to live in a country where everybody and his dog has a gun, on the other hand, i secretly want to own an AK-47!

Any $ scheme is also going to offer guns as an enticement, just with more steps.

The real solution is to give people the illusion they are “beating” the system. Tell people they can either give $100 to their preferred political party or $200 cash for themselves.

A restaurant did this with chicken wings. 5 wings were like $2 and 20 were $10. Anyone capable of basic math knows it’s “better” to order four 5-pieces, but that wasn’t the point—it was to get people to buy more wings, and they did.

But you CAN buy full-auto weapons. You just need to be rich enough to get one registered before 1986 IIRC. And a lot of "gun control" laws are explicitly designed to make it harder for lower income people to get firearms, melting point laws being the big example.
And yeah, I totally accept that owning guns does increase my risk, but I think the good that target shooting has done for my self-confidence and mental state outweighs that.

Other than a 4-member family buying, why would anyone want 20 or 25 wings?

Also, I am not seeing how the company makes a profit there, unless they already raised the price of the 5 wings and/or had them replaced a smaller possible number of wings to buy in one go. The 20 wing price might as well have been $1 million.

They make a profit because greedy people buy 20 wings for $8 and think they've saved $2 when without the $20 wings for $10 price they would have bought less wings and spent less.
Also buying food as a family is not uncommon.

It doesn't make sense, since you have no reason to buy 20 wings if you can't eat them (I suppose fast-food tends to become inedible fast, so you can't eat another day). Those who could eat 20 wings before the food goes bad, would have bought them anyway in one go, so the ridiculous special 20 wings for +2 dollars wouldn't mean anything to them either.

One also has to suppose that it would be more enticing to just have the 20 wing packet cost slightly less than $8; the company would marginally lose next to separate orders of 5 wings, but obviously they have a margin of profit for 5 wings so numbers would produce again a profit. (so, if anything, I see this scheme bringing a bigger profit only due to those who actually would routinely buy 20 wings while there was a slight discount for the packet, not those who were normally going to buy fewer).
