How old do puppies have to be before they can be expected to sleep through the night without needing to use the bathroom?

We always take the puppy out when he cries in the middle of the night (around 2-3am) but there have been a few nights when he's slept all the way through as well as nights (such as last night) where he continues crying after we've taken him out and he's done no 1 and no 2. I am beginning to think we've accidentally conditioned him to cry when he just wants out of his cage and not because he needs to use the bathroom.

What's a good cardio exercise I can do at home? Is there such a thing? I have a doorway pullup thing installed, but I barely use it.. because... well, I just get really tired after a couple reps - pulling yourself up and down and up and down is very tiring.. And exercise should be tiring, but that particular one just drains me.

So is there anything I can do, or should I just sign up at the local pool and swim some laps every couple days? I don't want to do the jogging thing because it's not supposed to be good for your knees, and my knees have seen some action.. plus they're sensitive and I've already had issues with them in the past.

Should I get a workout bench type of thing instead maybe? Suggest anything. Could I lift weights? I am looking for a more cardio-like workout to get more stamina and endurance .. flexibility, etc.. so I guess weights wouldn't work well for that purpose? Anyway, if there's solutions, shoot them at me

Why do you keep your puppy locked in a cage? :(

I am not at all an expert, but maybe a punching bag? That's a good workout.

How about a stationary bike? Exercises the legs as hard as you're willing to work without any concussive force on the knees.

I actually had a punching bag, but never hung it up anywhere and ended up selling it to my brother in law a couple months ago.. My basement is finished and it just had nowhere to be hung except for my garage, which I guess could have worked..but it's a bit of a mess there.

Stationary bike is an option, but then I'd rather just get a real one I think :p I've actually thought of getting one recently, but the problem is that there aren't many places to bike to around here, so I don't see myself getting into a habit of biking around frequently.

Hey, boxers skip rope, right? Is that good for cardio?

Yeah. But it's as hard on your knees as running. Getting a bike is good, if you would actually use it in a Canadian winter. Treadmill or stationary bike works better, if you would actually use it when the weather is bad outside. Some of them you might be able to set up with a computer so that you can exercise your legs while keeping your mind busy with the computer, so you don't get too bored with it.

I gotta be honest - a bike like that seems silly, but I must consider it as an option because it seems so practical.. It would fit in my bedroom and I could totally watch TV while I used it.. Realistically speaking, I could see myself getting into a routine where I use the bike before or after bed on a regular basis.

I wonder what kind I could get then? I have a Costco membership, maybe I'll look around there

I think I can get a similar effect in my bedroom by getting just the bike, without the desk. There's a 42 inch TV on the wall with a media player with 3T of stuff on it, and a playstation 3. There's also plenty of room right beside the bed to fit in a decently sized bike and make it point directly at the TV.

So I wouldn't be able to get on CFC or reddit, but I might get more into the workout if my hands are holding onto something anyway.

Thanks for the idea, I'm going to see what they have at Costco next time I'm there. It might be a perfect lazy man's gym - in combination with the pullup thing which I already have.. maybe? Cardio, upper, and lower body. That's way better than what I'm doing right now anyway

I would get the desk if you could hook up the bike via usb to your laptop or a monitor and have access to a bunch of games somehow, where you either have to bike a lot or use the pedals to power something.. or.. any sort of competitive game-like thing, really. That'd be cool. Or you get on your bike and your goal is to bike to New York and back, and every time you sit down you can add to your total and google maps will tell you where you are. "Today I biked from Toronto to Buffalo!" sounds a lot more motivating than "Just 4 more minutes..."

@warpus: Im guessing you are trying to loose wieght? In that case biking is very ineffective, especially in the way you seem to plan doing it.

Over the past month, I've developed some pretty bad chest pains, which has generously transformed into pain behind my ribs, too. Now, whenever I stretch my arms up and move from side to side, I can feel... something grinding against something else and my breathing becomes incredibly shallow. It returns to normal when I stop moving from side to side, so the difficulties breathing is directly associated with the grinding sensation I feel/hear.

Is this a problem or will it buff out?

I have no idea what that might be, but if something like this dosent go away after a week, i'd see a dotor.

@ Warpus, don't you play in goal for a futsal or 5-aside team? Why not ask to play outfield? :P

A 30 minutes game of futsal is heavily anaerobic. Think of all those time limits you have when the keeper has the ball and during a kick-in...there is practically no way to time waste. Your first couple of games though..well..it will hurt ;)

My sister's little dog seems to like its cage. It's a safe place for it, when there's large adult human beings staggering around not watching where they're going.

Book an appointment with your GP/Canadian equivalent. At worst, they won't find anything (or maybe that's the best option).

Just trying to be more healthy and have more energy. Weight isn't really a part of it, although I wouldn't mind losing 10-15 pounds either, it's not the main goal.

Our pick up league just finished and I missed the last couple months due to an ankle injury that I picked up last year in Peru. I'm a part of an 11 vs 11 team this summer, but I volunteered to play net fulltime, because last year we got this guy who really sucked.. plus I feel like I'm really out of shape.

But yeah, when I did play indoors, it's always an amazing workout. It's kind of why I signed up, but it was only 1-3 times a month; I want something more regular

It is how you house break a puppy ny caging it at night and when no one is home. It is only temporary and will stop when he can make it through the night without making a mess. Last night we actually switched from his cage to a bathroom but it's too soon to tell if he likes it better.
