TIL: That Canada has a bona-fide Quebec maple syrup cartel, and people can get sent to jail for a decade for violating their policies, which is considered "selling maple syrup on the black market." Blew my mind.
You lot sell high fructose corn syrup, full stop, so how can you be amazed at what others do with their own syrups?

But American maple syrup! :nono:

Genuine maple syrup is pricey stuff, at least in this region.

There is an episode of the Netflix series Dirty Money which is dedicated to a heist that was pulled off at the Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve in Quebec.

Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve… you can't make that kind of thing up.

But there is no corn syrup (or raisin) cartel. I knew that maple syrup was a big deal for Canada... the flag has a Maple leaf on it... but I didn't realize it was being handled like middle eastern oil. I mean there is a freaking Canadian strategic maple syrup reserve... like what the US has for oil... I don't care what you say, that's amazing and you can't pretend its not. I would have never guessed that was the case.

EDIT: haha x-posted

Yep that's where I got my info :)

Well, if you want to ensure a steady supply at all times, you'll need a proper reserve. :)

Did I tell you about the time I was abducted by the Canadian secret police and forced to toil in the maple syrup mines for 25 years?

Hey, that's right! I know because you have the same avatar as this fellow Andrew McCabe who keeps telling me I have inherited 25 million Australian dollars from the Bureau.

Yes, well more accurately, I posted before reading/seeing your post. You happy now?
Not quite. I'm still trying to find that squirrel Tim pointed out a few weeks ago. It's fast becoming my #1 priority.

A forty-minute x-post?
Temporal anomalies are everywhere... :scan:

Sounds like a bad episode of Adderly!

I have a package of maple syrup candy in the pantry. There are 15 pieces in the package, and the cost was $7.99 + GST from Amazon. That's the sale price. Regular price is somewhere between $12 and $13 plus tax.

This is stuff that gets rationed.

My understanding is that the best Maple syrup is produced where the trees experience longer colder winters. I know there's way more to it than that, but that's my layman's understanding. The best US state for Maple syrup is Vermont for this reason but I don't imagine that Vermont produce even a fraction of what Canada does.

There's also Maine and New Hampshire. But it's produced in many more places as well. Most off mine has come from Maine in recent years, since i travel there every year.

My parents get the real stuff from Vermont and always have as long as I can remember, consequently I'm actually unable to stand the taste of fake syrup.

Just reading a (fiction) book where a body has just been found in a large barrel(?) of Vermont Maple Syrup.....just thought I'd share that!
Happy eating! ;)
