TIL: Today I Learned

This is about the eggs of chickens or other domestic fowl, used as a foodstuff, right?

Why would you pre-wash eggs of all things?

Given the penchant of 'Muricans for visually appealing food, maybe they wash the eggs so that they look better.

Well today I learned that you can peel those eggs if they are boiled.

Before I boiled them soft and easy and when I tried to peel them everything breaks apart. Shame.

So today my wife took those yummy eggs from me and simply put them under running cold water for a minute and peeled 6 perfectly cooked yummy eggs in less than a minute.

Not a scratch on one of them! Obviously I am not the master of this kitchen. :)

But the eggs were washed!

If you boil them long enough, they take on the consistency of rubber and you can bounce them like a ball!:D

I found out about this while googling what to do with the stuff in my fridge after the power outage. In the US and Canada, store bought eggs are always refrigerated... the eggs are pre-washed by the producers, something to do with the fact chickens aren't vaccinated for salmonella the way they are in Britain.

TIL The Canadian Government just tested a new emergency alert system that broadcasts on all cell phones.
How many Canadians here had their cell-phones give off an alarm around just before 2:00-ish ?

Not me. I don't deserve to hear about emergencies. :mischief:

Yeah, but aren't you on the west coast? they might be doing it around 2-ish in each time zone....or it's just the ontario thing...i wasn't paying attention to either the radio announcement this morning or the text on the actual alert.(It was my boss's cellphone) i though one of the computers had gone stupid again...

I didn't get anything, though I have an older cell phone with basic features. I guess this means if the missiles are incoming, I can spend my last moments in peace and quiet instead of running around screaming?

Based on my Twitter, it seems to be an Ontario thing.

Seems typical. The new National Emergency Alert System, Now capable of reaching 7.7% of the public!
Gee, I wonder how much money was thrown at that little project....

What about the people who don't have cell phones?

Sucks to be you?

I imagine the alert system is also linked to landlines, just like how it'd hijack TV and radio. Although maybe I'm putting too much faith in Canada's disaster preparedness...

I think you are putting too much faith in it.

I don't think TPTB have realized that there are people who never listen to the radio, rarely watch TV, and don't own a cellphone. The only times I've ever received alerts on the computer are if I checked out the Weather Network and found an alert for my region for extreme cold, severe storms, etc.

At least back in the late '60s/early '70s when we still did duck-and-cover drills in school, there was a siren that could be heard all across town so nobody had to worry about whether or not they had a phone/TV/radio. Unless you were deaf, it was impossible to miss.

But then they stopped the tests because they didn't want to alarm anyone, the drills finally stopped, and now you have to be an electronic media junkie to get warned about things...

Apparently it only worked on a few mobile networks even though it was supposed to work on all of them, and the one in Quebec didn't work at all(someone put a space in the code where there wasn't supposed to be a space).
