TIL: Today I Learned

Flight plans will have to change to allow for much more gradual, low-bank turns or else people out in the wings will have to get comfortable with 20 meter drops during a banking turn for flying wing-type designs to be accepted.

haha
fasten your seatbelts.... and business class upfront

Good point !

50 years ago the flying wing was pitched as the plane of the future. It is nice to see it may come back.

TIL: the flying wing is back on the drawing table for mass civil transport: the Flying-V.

The first concept has roughly the capacity (and overall size) of an Airbus 350, but the geometry uses 20% less fuel.
(you save some weight and drag by losing up the hull in the wings)
The article (Dutch) has a short vid: https://www.rtlnieuws.nl/economie/artikel/4732776/klm-tu-delft-duurzaam-vliegtuig-flying-v
The project a joint endeavour of KLM and the (specialised green) engineering university TU Delft. For sure sponsored also by KLM for a green image (they are also active in bio- and synthetic kerosine)

Here an article in English
https://www.tudelft.nl/en/ae/flying-v/

Considering that a few years ago even a famous brand unique plane (the concord) had to stop flying, is this new type of civic transport plane viable?
Also, tbh, it does look rather uncanny.

Have you read askthepizzaguy's old thread on how to be exploited by your pizza delivery overlords-cum-quasi-employers?

Yes and I did and as a former restaurant worker, I'm intimately familiar with all of that. The contractor thing was new to me because it's so extremely abused that I thought the illegal way it is done is the *normal* way. Like almost every company I've worked for in aerospace clearly violates the IRS rules on contractors to the point where I was completely shocked to learn that the IRS even has those rules.

Well, after all the US spawned Amazon and Uber, among many other technological wonders, so… yeah, that is but a natural development from earlier stages along the same process e.g. pizza deliverers being exploited.

TIL, as related by T-Rex from Dinosaur Comics, that

the excretion of sacs near beaver's anal glands are used as a cheap substitute for vanilla taste and can legally be listed in ingredients as ‘natural flavour’

!!!!

The good news is that I already preferred chocolate icecream.

*drops tub of cheap vanilla ice-cream and runs off to the bathroom screaming*

And for some reason, this was the first thing to pop into my head...
Spoiler :

That's Castoreum for you.

Well, TIalsoL that a lot of allegedly veg(etari)an products in some markets are enhanced with colourants (i.e. dyed) made by crushing insects (i.e. cochineal), because manufacturers apparently think that puréed tomato has to be a certain shade of red or else.

There is a brazilian (iirc) female novelist who is currently hyped here by a publishing house, and she wrote (among other stuff) a story about someone who eats a cockroach.
I did listen to a presentation of that book, in the recent national book fair here. Can't say I liked it. And from a small story of hers I read (in english) I was disappointed.
Particularly since the publisher goons present her always as "the new Kafka", "the female Kafka" etc, when there is no actual stylistic similarity other than her mentioning an insect in an unexpected way.

You also find castoreum in cigarettes, some wines and so on. Vegans are getting arsey about it. :p

Some, but not all, brands of sugar use bone char to make the sugar white. So any product with added sugar has potential to not be vegan.

It's been a long time since I played blackjack in a casino and someone mentioned that they have now changed the payout on a blackjack to 6-5 instead of the old 7.5-5. Can anybody else confirm this is the new norm. What greedy bastards.

Wouldn't that rate be up to each individual casino?

From 2014:

Two major casinos on the Las Vegas Strip have tweaked blackjack payout rules in a move experts say is subtle but significant to casual gamblers: They get less money if they hit 21 with just two cards.

Pacific Standard magazine reported last week that the Venetian and Palazzo changed their payouts from 3-to-2 to 6-to-5 in March of this year, giving themselves an extra edge against players and potentially setting a precedent for other casinos on the Strip.

6-to-5 barely is a gain...

Thanx for that Birdjaguar. So it has just started but will probably spread quickly.
While it doesn't seem like much, it will make them lots of more money.
