@Takhisis I wonder if your president would enjoy a gift of them

 That might be why they've imposed so many limits on online purchases and so on.

Also TIL the current president of Argentina won the election even though he had only 48% of the votes. First-past-the-post?

Yeah. The unrepresentative Electoral College that had been used until the 1989 elections was replaced with a clause that says the first-round winner need not face a runoff against the runner-up if he has more than 40% of the total valid votes cast and a difference of 10% or more over said runner-up OR if he has more than 45% of the vote.
So 45.05% v. 49.99% is a first-round victory.

Due to vote splitting, our last two Prime Ministers won with 30-something % of the vote. Of course, that's of people who actually voted, not the number of eligible voters, which is much higher.

How delightful. Our governments manage to get in on 30-40% each time.

Which is why, in darker times, the party now in power has often tried to shift the system into gerrymandered parliamentarism.

TIL that Burton Cummings (former bandmate of Randy Bachman in the Guess Who) did a cover of Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet."

Honestly I find it kind of strange.

Looking back over my long and twisted path I think my number one concert experience was seeing BTO in a club in Honolulu that seated maybe eight hundred people. They blew that place apart.

I think you mentioned it in a raves thread!

So when's your autobiography coming out

TIL U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson would frequently terrorize guests at his ranch with his amphibious car.
https://www.businessinsider.com/lyndon-johnson-played-terrifying-prank-with-his-amphicar-2014-8
The President, with [White House secretary] Vicky McCammon in the seat alongside him and me in the back, was now driving around in a small blue car with the top down. We reached a steep incline at the edge of the lake and the car started rolling rapidly toward the water. The President shouted, "The brakes don’t work! The brakes won’t hold! We’re going in! We’re going under!" The car splashed into the water. I started to get out. Just then the car leveled and I realized we were in a Amphicar. The President laughed. As we putted along the lake then (and throughout the evening), he teased me. "Vicky, did you see what Joe did? He didn’t give a damn about his President. He just wanted to save his own skin and get out of the car." Then he’d roar.

The "Now a pure snore disturbeded sum dust." sentence is the only part that makes even a tiny bit of sense.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be in the same room where a "pure snore" disturbed any dust. :hide:

Hmm. There's a Lolcat translation of the bible and Shakespeare and even the Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles." I wonder if anyone's tackled this stuff.

TIL that Google now has pronunciation guides for certain words. I was looking up the official pronunciation of "niche" since I've been hearing more and more people saying it as "nitch" and I was starting to wonder if I was the crazy one.

Behold.

I've tried it with hyperbole and epitome, and it worked for those. Nothing came up for a standard word like neighbourhood. Nothing came up for acai, Aoife, or hygge. So it's very limited. But still, this is the first time I've seen it. I hope it gets expanded upon.
