Today I learned about the lucky iron fish.

In Cambodia there's a lot of iron-deficiency anemia (both cast-iron pots and a better diet are too expensive for a lot of them suffering from it) so the people who made it gave the women in a village a chunk of iron. But the women didn't want to use a chunk of iron so they made it into a fish, which is a symbol of good luck, health, and happiness in local folklore. The women used it then and it helped with blood iron levels.

Today i learned KFC's twitter account is following 11 people. 5 Spice Girls and 6 guys named Herb.

TIL about Swedish Death Cleaning:

Spoiler :
A Swedish author wants you to think about your impending death while cleaning to prevent becoming a pack-rat.

Margareta Magnusson’s forthcoming book, “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,” is the latest in self-help guides to live a less cluttered life, but Magnusson’s centers around the Swedish concept of decluttering before you die, or “döstädning,” derived from the Swedish words for death and cleaning.

The cleaning guide emphasizes not being a burden to anyone – especially your spouse or your children – after you pass on. The way to do that is by ridding your home of any excess trinkets or knick-knacks.

I thought it would be about those people cleaning up apartments after a messy suicide.
Sweden yes :)

Reminder to PAY DEBNETS before committing suicide !
I do have a large collection of books, I suppose they can be cremated and buried with me ! Problem SOLVED

I was thinking this is pretty ridiculous, but then there's this part of the article:
Magnusson, who is in her 80s, suggests that the death cleaning process should start at 65, but anytime is a good time to start. The periodic cleaning should then be kept up until you, well, die.

Now I think it's actually quite reasonable to an extend. I've been in a few houses of "old person who keeps stuff" - those places are not very nice, smell terrible and are full of trash that is worthless to anyone but them. It would probably be nice of them if they threw away a few things. Saying that you should get rid of "everything" of emotional value seems over the top though, and the people who probably should overthink their hoarding habits will not be reasonable about it anyway.

Growing up in southern California, I was raised on Mexican food. I was therefore shocked when it was not until today I learned that the singular of "tamales" is NOT "tamale," but "tamal."

[I'm not the only one. Spellcheck is fine with "tamale," but thinks "tamal." is a misspelling.]

JNIL that i am mentioned in wikipedia.

It is just as a translator, and specifically in refferrence to one of the twelve stories in the collection i translated. But still i wasn't aware that i am part of wiki. :smug:
