Next: skull-size recognition software to identify intelligence and fitness to be a royal.
Actually, all it takes (for women, at least) is the willingness to appear in public wearing hats so godawful ugly or weird-looking that sane people wouldn't be caught dead in them.

Justinian was also of peasant birth, but at least he was brought into the ruling classes in the traditional fashion. :)
By adoption or conquest?

The name indicates that he was adopted by his uncle, Emperor Justinus. That's very literal nepotism.

I learned that in the nfl if the clock changes from a non running clock to a running clock because of a play stoppage then by rule there's a 10 second run off under 2 minutes if the possessing team has no timeouts. Sad day to be a Lion's fan.

TIL that while the Nic Cage remake is rightly infamous, the original 70s Wicker Man has aged horribly and its production values were rather low to begin with... I guess their apples did die in the end :)

what do you mean

Stupid video I saw of some teenager who got tired while running and claimed that was evidence that we are running out of gravity.

EDIT: The hilarity being that this person actually believes gravity is some sort of finite resource that we can "run out of". She even went so far as to say we need to "quit gravity" before we run out.

that's kinda hilarious, but I think you really should have shared that video rather than making a vague reference to it, since you can't expect everyone to have seen it

I used to do this kind of thing on facebook lol and I don't think people cared for it (was called out once IRL by my uncle)

Actually, eating enough gravy should help address any looming gravity shortage.

But if you eat too much gravity you will gain mass.

Back to topic:
TIL that 0.75kg of vorn starch powder are enough for a decent sized explosion.
Two powder explosions were demonstrated at a trade fair to show countermeasures.
First one was a classical overpreasure releave valve - the other one was a high speed counterinjection of extinguishing powder( in this case sodium bicarbonate).
Obviously this method only works in closed environments like pipes and containers, but as the extinguishing and thus the preasure reduction happens so fast you will neither hear nor feel the explosion in the outside.

Sorry i can't find the option in my mobile to change the language of the auto correction. So yes corn starch works better :)

Yikes!

TIL there's a tattoo shop in Jerusalem that has been operating since the 14th century.

Apparently they were the last of the old Christian tattooists who served pilgrims to the city, and for a period between 1948 and the 1960s, the family were the only tattoo artists in Israel. The current artist continues to offer traditional Coptic tattoos as souvenirs for pilgrims and tourists alongside modern designs.

TIL that diamond is from the greek term 'adamas', meaning (i suppose) non-tamable (due to how hard it is).
Wasn't conscious of that, since while the term adamantion exists as an adjective, we use the slight corruption 'diamanti' for the noun, where the root isn't as visible.

It's possible it comes from a- + damnao ("not" + "conquer"), but it is also possible it comes from a Semitic root, cf. Akk.: "adamu" ("a precious stone")
