TIL that you can be denied cover by your travel insurance if you have a drink, and not necessarily that much either:

Alcohol (a blood alcohol level that exceeds 0.19% - approximately four pints or four 175ml glasses of wine)

Four pints will take you well above 0.2% won't it? It's the driving limit in Norway and you can hardly drink anything if you want to be sure you remain under.

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me that an insurance company would fail to cover you if you drink substantially beyond the amount considered safe for driving.

Not unreasonable if they won't insure you for driving no, but the safe limits for driving are pretty low with regards to being able to perform other activities. And people often drink on holidays, so... kind of renders it a bit useless.

In a sense, I could agree. If they are up front about it, and especially if there is a choice. However, I have had travel insurance many times and have only just found out about this, and I suspect there are few people here who have never drunk 4 pints in one day while on holiday. What do I do if I want to drink on holiday? I cannot find someone who will cover me!

If you want to drink, then don't drive. And vice versa.

It's just like being at home.

Agreed. Should be judged on a case to case basis. Seems like just another way for insurance companies to worm out of their responsibilities.

Count your blessings

Alcohol is something you can still influence... or if you took your alcohol you can influence what you do or not

But what about obesity ?
It is clear that overweight reduces your ability to avoid some risks... and if you fall (from stairs or so) the impact is much higher, etc
So these insurances, having their statistics, will all the time take out the next low hanging fruit
Obesity for sure to follow
and THAT you cannot change just like that

Did people miss the part where he said travel insurance? This isn't about driving insurance or medical insurance.

We are not talking about driving, we are talking about holiday insurance and not getting coverage for medical issues incurred while under the influence.

It isn't even just medical issues, it's anything at all that you would expect travel insurance to cover, such as losses/breakages etc.

You're confusing 0.2 rating with percentages. A 0.2 bac is 0.02%. Yes that would be less than one drink I believe. 0.19% would be a 1.9 rating, which would be around 4 pints probably. It really depends on how strong the beer is though.

For traveler's insurance that sounds really dumb. As long as you aren't breaking any laws or ordinances I don't see how they would be able to squirm out of covering you. Are there any other insurers you can use?

I have quickly googled and I cannot find one. They squirm out of it because they put it in the contract (the link in the 1st post has some examples of the terms).

Well, I must say that's very strange, then.

I suppose it's a reaction to the common practice of getting absolutely bladdered. And then trying to jump to the neighbouring hotel block, for example.

No i just misremembered it as 2 per mille and not the correct 0.2 per mille.

~0.2% bac is a lot more than four pints though. It's approaching alcohol poisoning levels.

The Nexus maintains a public ban list, which isn't quite as bad, but public shaming is never a terribly good idea.

I like the one month ban for posting Star Wars spoilers.
