Tip the pizza delivery driver!

Get a better job me thinks.

To the Brits, Finns, and other foreigners: It's expected over here. Fine if that is not the case over yonder, but if you come visit the USA, please have the decency to play ball and tip the pizza delivery guy, okay?

It's not expected here and the whole idea seems very alien to me. But sure, I'd have no objection to tip pizza guy over there now that I know even though I feel that your system isn't fair either to the delivery guy or to the client. By the way, how do you decide who's supposed to be tipped and who's not (like pizza guy :yup: but grocery store clerk :nope: )?

I never tip, i don't know if its different, but here in the UK, you pay for delivery.. damned if im paying anymore!

It's kinda' like grammar. A lot of it's obvious (to us) and the rest is not. We actually read books on the subject over here.

Seems to change from region to region too. I know here in Nova Scotia there's a lot more tipping than back in Ontario. Until I came here, I had never seen someone tip the cashier at Tim Horton's before...

It doesn't really matter to me. If you put the tip on the slip we get it at the end of the shift as opposed to getting it on the spot if you give us cash.

Some people just put a line through the tip portion and don't give anything even though the delivery was on time and I was courteous. This is the biggest insult IMO to pizza delivery drivers.
Oh okay. Some places tax the tip amount as income, while cash is more wink-wink-nudge-nudge under the table I thought.

This conversation is making me grin so hard it's starting to hurt. In Vegas, you can get all kinds of free passes for different services in casinos. These passes typically contain the reminder "does not include gratuity" which is mind-bogglingly obvious to locals. It's finally dawning on me why this reminder is probably important. I have always felt mildly insulted by these kinds of reminders. That seems funny now.

A 'gratuity-is-expected' mentality is very disrespectful... yet so common.

I agree. There is such a thing as doing an average job, which would not warrant a tip imo, and going the extra inch which would.

But I also tip, unless service was terrible. Mainly because I don't like coins in my pocket so I simply round up. Sometimes that means a big tip, sometimes it doesn't.

I always tip as well - and usually quite well - mostly because my sister & dad have had jobs that relied on tips, so I know what it's like and how much tips help.

However, if anyone ever gives me a "hey where's my tip, you're expected to tip!" attitude, they can go to hell.

It's laziness. You're not hardworking enough to actually provide some valuable service that can make good money on it's own merit.

Are you serious? First of all, that's nothing more than an insult. Do I call you lazy because of where your income comes from? No, because I'm not a rude jackass. Thanks. Now please explain to me why serving you your food is not a valuable service. Why mixing you your drinks is not a valuable service. Why driving to your house to bring you a pizza so you don't have to get dressed and burn up your gas is not a valuable service. If none of these are valuable services, why are people doing them and getting paid for it? And how are they not making good money on their own merit when the vast majority of Americans understand the system and actually pay the people doing these jobs?

You're not better than the pizza guy because of your job.

You don't have to give a tip. True. But you'll be viewed poorly as rude, unappreciative and inconsiderate and your future service will suffer. Sorry but thats the status quo of our society.

There you go, guys. Like it or not, that's the way it is. (In the US, at least.)

I've worked for minimum wage myself. Only I didn't have the benefit of some weird social nicety that required my customers to give me money for doing my job. Zero sympathy here.

Minimum wage? You mean the $2.13 that service industry workers are paid?

I always pick up my pizza, don't have to worry about deliveries or tips.

Who'd work for that much? Being unemployed would be better paid over here.

Why do you think Bugs is so upset? For certain workers, tipping is an expected part of their salary. People that don't uphold their end of that social contract for no reason are, quite frankly, losers who are screwing over their fellow citizens.

PAY THEM MORE THEN FFS.

I mean for crying out loud, you're telling me that I have to pay for delivery of pizzas advertised as 'free delivery'. Enough of the false advertising, and less of the threatening to piss on my pizza. Just pay them more! I mean what bloody difference would it make, except that everyone would know, from the outset, exactly where they stand. No one would feel cheated and no-one would receive urine soaked Italian food.

You see all these comments about how tipping is part of the system?

It shouldn't be - it ceases being a "gratuity" if it is.

Having said that, I understand that it is part of the system, and I tip.

You do have a bit of a point here - these people should be paid more. But they're not, and they rely on tips.. so if you don't tip, you can expect poor service in the future.

Okay, sorry. I'll fix everything after lunch.

Well then hopefully the law of the market shall prevail: i'll take my business elsewhere and i'll end up paying slightly more for pizzas delivered by properly paid BugFatties whose employers are not taking the piss out of them, me and the social contract (although it's fine if they take it out of the pizzas as well of course :) )

I don't think small pizza chains, which operate on very small margins, could afford to pay pizza guys 7.00+ an hour in wages, without a pretty big hike in the cost of the pizza. The Tipping system actually keeps costs down for everybody, even the consumer (since you dont have to tip if the service sucks...if you didn't tip, and the pizza was late, you're still stuck with the expensive pizza)

So they'd have to charge 10-15% more per pizza, right? Hmmm
