To alcohol - The cause of and solution to all life's problems.

The depth of flavour in a good red wine just goes on and on and on...heaven!

Well that's just stupid.

Is it? I usually drive without a seat belt. I find it makes me drive more carefully. I get a fine about once every 3 years.

This may seem strange to you, but I believe the logic is sound. I am more concerned about causing an accident than I am about being involved in one. Fine, you might say. But what about the maniac coming the other way? In which case, I say, there's a chance of me being killed and my organs being harvested. I have heard there is a shortage of such things. I do not carry an organ donor card*, since I am campaigning for an opt out option rather than the opt in as at present.

As I see it, it's win-win. What do you think?

(*Though this is probably stupid on my part - I shall have to consider.)

I buckle in the front unless its a really short distance (And ALWAYS if I'm driving, I suck at it) but in the back usually don't, even on (Especially on) long road trips.

From Christian to Christian (At Classical) Jesus drank wine:p

That stated, I don't drink. I just don't understand why any Christian would have a problem with it (In moderation.)
You have to remember is that they way they drank wine back then was they had a grape pulp that they carried with them and they would mix it with water to varying degrees. You could almost think of it as cordial the way they used the pulp to make a drink, the greater the ratio the higher the alcohol content. So often the ratio of pulp to water would be quite high and it would be like drinking a lemon, lime and bitters, which contains a small amount of alcohol, but obviously not enough to get you drunk. Of course if you gave equal parts of parts, then it is alcoholic.
I drink alcohol to lower my risk of coronary heart disease.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11070527

"Among the 196 initially reviewed articles, 51 were selected. Since qualitative characteristics of the studies were significant sources of heterogeneity, the pooled dose-response functions were based on the 28 cohort studies with higher quality. Risk decreased from 0 to 20 g/day (RR = 0.80; 95% CI: 0.78, 0.83); there was evidence of a protective effect up to 72 g/day (RR = 0.96; 95% CI: 0.92, 1.00)."

But then you will have to worry about liver disease.

First I should probably ask, do you think drinking alcohol is sinful? Or merely pointless? How I approach would depend on what your opinion is.

Second of all, I don't see the relevance. I agree that the Bible condemns drunkenness, but I don't see how a reasonable amount of alcohol that does NOT cause drunkenness can in any way be sinful.

Thirdly, I give you the wedding of Cana:

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+2&version=ESV

They served what was supposed to be the best wine first, and then Jesus served stronger wine. Since drunkenness is condemned in the Bible, I'm sure that, as you say, most of the time wine was watered down. But consider that Jesus actually did a miracle to make more wine, and make it stronger than what the guests had been drinking. This seems to imply that its OK to have alcohol to a moderate degree.

Again, I totally agree that if you get drunk, its more than too much. But a glass of wine or beer or so I don't see as sinful, though its not something I do (I would also say it would be sinful for me since I'm not legally allowed to have it.)

Wouldn't your actions while intoxicated matter more than the actual intoxication? Also, the effects it has on your life, if you place it too high?

Nobody really likes to drink, but people love being drunk.
It's exactly the other way around for me. I don't like to be drunk at all... but I do love a good glass of wine.

One thing I have never understood is the reason why people drink. I just cant stand the smell of alcohol. So why do you like to drink?

Some people try to drown their sorrow on alcohol. Of course it does not solve the problem, merely negates the symptom, replacing it with another life-threatening situation.

Personally i never was into alcohol, and have not drunk any for a decade.

Maybe it's time for a few sobering thoughts on alcohol . I love it . I love it far too much .
I'm not an alcoholic but could easily be if I had less to live for (more accurately , perceived I had less to live for) . Unfortunately it is the great obsession of the heavy drinker that one day he or she will be able to drink like the casual drinker .

So for all the posters that enjoy a glass or two of wine , or the teens/early twenties posters that like to party or get on the piss with friends while watching sport , just bare in mind that the slide into excessive drinking is quite easy to arrive at .

Let's say that 30 people have posted in this thread who drink . Statistics from the western world I'm sure would indicate that a few of you are going to have a problem with alcohol in the future . And it's certainly possible to sustain for quite a while relationships , study , career , health etc for a very long time while drinking heavily . But not indefinitely .

Drinking in moderation is definitely one of lifes great pleasures . Wonderful tastes to experience , social situations to enjoy etc . But please , especially some of the younger posters , just be aware that there are potential dangers .

For the posters like Ghostwriter who have very little experience with alcohol but have decided it's not for them and are going to leave it alone , yeah you are missing out but it will hardly be the worse decision(the decision not to drink) you make in life . But a life of total non experimentation and avoiding experiences is probably equally as damaging as going too far with things.

Why? Is it really that hard to get sleep in college? And is this because schoolwork is THAT hard, or because people generally like to spend a lot of their time up late partying?

That really depends on your major, school, program, etc. Business being taught at a public university probably won't sap your time as much as, say, pre-law at Harvard.

A i explained earlier, the wine they drunk was sort like cordial so you mixed it with water to the desired effect. The alcohol in the drink would kill off any germs in the water, since the water back then wasn't as good as it was now. Now we have no excuses since the water we drink is clean and we shouldn't get sick from drinking it, unlike Timothy, who obviously did not want to get drunk, so he abstained from all alcohol, but a small amount was enough to make the water sterile and drinkable.

Pray tell, which verse in the bible mentioned germ theory.

Not in the quantities that lower my risk of heart disease.

Eh? Pre-law at Harvard sounds like one of the easiest undergrad programs you could possibly do. A degree that is one of the worst possible avenues to obtaining a law degree at a school known for rampant grade inflation...

You realize you need a drink to be roughly 120-proof (well above the concentration of any wine, even before dilution) to effectively kill bacteria?

1) I like the taste of certain alcoholic drinks (and obviously only drink the ones that I like the taste of)

2) I like being drunk, or at least buzzed.

3) The places where people usually drink are also places where there are a lot of hot girls. The confluence of hot girls and alcohol is a thing to behold.

4) When you're a kid, and you wanted to do something with your friends, you could just sit on a street corner or a wall or something under a dimly lit streetlight in the freezing cold and chat. Now, as an adult, I can't do that anymore. So I go to the pub, to sit in the nice warmth with a cold beer, to have a little chat. It's the same reason that coffee shops exist.

Seems to me that it's a social lubricant. I'm still perplexed about those who want to drink themselves to the brink of alcohol poisoning not because they want to drown their sorrows, but because they want to be drunk.
