In part II of "The Top 50 Videogames of the Decade" feature on Destructoid, Civilization III is listed in the 31st position. Here is what they had to say about it:

As complex and intimidating as they are, the Civilization games -- originally created by mastermind Sid Meier -- are surprisingly accessible. Once you get past the initial fear of trying to manage a deep and evolved empire simulator that follows the player from the start of recorded history to modern times, the Civilization games are some of the most playable, oh-my-gosh-I-can't-believe-it's-already-4-in-the-morning videogames ever created (trust me on this one from personal experience).

Civilization III is a highly balanced, impressively designed simulation game that is a must play for anyone with a PC and even the smallest interest in the very particular, sometimes overwhelming genre. Don't let the educational subject matter fool you -- Civilization III is not Mavis Beacon Teaches History! It is a real testament when, even today, eight years since the game's release, people are still falling in love with Civilization III.

It would be interesting to see if they also list Civilization IV on the list somewhere... So far the games listed are:

Spoiler :

49. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

46. Super Smash Bros. Melee
45. Team Fortress 2
44. WarioWare: Twisted!
43. Banjo-Tooie

31. Civilization III

The only rule of this week-long series -- other than making sure each game was released between 2000 and today -- is that only one game from each series could make the final cut.

The way i interpreted that it probably means civ 4 isnt in.

Really, CIV3? I liked that one the least. I would preferred they put CIV2 in, at least. CIV3 was so... locked and unmoddable. Ugh.

I think that Civ4 is superior in every way to Civ3. No contest in my opinion. In fact I think Civ4 is one of the best games of all time. The only game I liked better was Xcom.

You need to take a trip to http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=46. There's some pretty good scenarios there. True, Civ3 isn't quite as extensible as Civ4, but there's still a remarkable amount that can be done with it. And there's been plenty of time for modmakers to learn the intricacies of Civ3 modding, too.

Civ2 was released in the '90s, so it's ineligible for the presumably 2000's list. Even if they allowed Nov/Dec '99, no Civ2 expansions are eligible.

And they're right about people still falling in love with Civ3. It's the top standalone game under $5 on Steam, so there's plenty of people buying it or rebuying it, and that's just online. One of my friends who'd never played it prior to this year has been playing it all the time these past two weeks - many times the 3 hours or so I've played in that time.

I'm curious to see what their top ones are as well. I don't play enough to know how good the rankings really are, but I recognize more of this list than most.

I still play Civ 3 from time to time. There are some scenarios that I like to play. I think CIV is better, but Civ 3 was pretty close. IMO Civ 3 modding was easier, but CIV's modding was much more changeable. And my brother still plays Civ 3, he says he doesn't like civ 3.

Let's hear it for X-Com. And by that , I mean the orignial game with a few bugs removed and more varied alien cresa and better graphics -nothing more. ALL the sequels are inferior, especially the ones that try to pretend that they are Wolfenstein.

[:gripe:]

Why is WarioWare above TF2 and Smash, and why the hell is Kingdom Hearts five places above Team Fortress 2? At number 40, no less?

The author made the audacious claim that "The fans seem to prefer melee",
but polls seem to disagree:
Brawl got to the semifinals of GameFAQs's Best Game ever poll,*
losing to Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy X, and MGS4,
while Melee lost to Pokemon in the quarterfinals,
implying that "the fans"(who do not appear to have been consulted for Civ) prefer the latter.

Did the author ask anyone on Civ Fanatics or any other civ site which version of Civ
is the best? Someone provide me a link if he did, but it looks like he didn't.
I like how he's using "the fans" as his citation with smash, while conveniently ignoring Civ's far, far more dedicated and loyal fan base.:wallbash:

[/:gripe:]

Sorry if I sounded overly whiny, but I just needed to get this out of my system.

So no Civ4 or SSBB, it seems. Well, at least GameFAQs will get REALLY pissed off!

I have found Part Three (#30-21) of the list, there is still no Civilization IV.

Here it is:

Spoiler :

Part Three(#30-21)
30. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
29. Shenmue II
28. Left 4 Dead
27. Skies of Arcadia
26. Paper Mario
25. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
24. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
23. Cave Story
22. Ico
21. Ikaruga

CIV could be #1? Probably not though.

I get the feeling it's gonna be some anime game as number one. I doubt Civ IV will be listed. Plus I doubt TES IV is gonna be listed as well, but they might list Morrowind.

The top 20 has been posted. Here's what I think.

If the 1 game per series rule holds, than this means that Civ4, Zelda: TP, SSBB, MGS4, and GTAIV have all been knocked off eligibility. The latter two not making it is quite surprising!

World of Warcraft in the top 20 was a bit of a given.

Nice to see Metroid Prime and Wind Waker in the top 15 though. Take that, GameCube haters! MP in particular has been a big failure on most top lists recently (and then there was this mess: http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Kingdom_Hearts_vs_Vice_City_vs_Metroid_Prime_vs_Paper_Mario_2009) and the game completely failed to make Edge's Top 100 Games to Play Today, so color me surprised that it got on the list (ahead of World of Warcraft, GTA San Andreas, Call of Duty 4, KOTOR, BioShock, and SSBM no less). And Pikmin 2 in the top 20 was surprising, as was Silent Hill 2 and Okami in the top 15. As far as Edge's Top 100 goes, here were the top 50 from what I remember:

Spoiler :

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Super Mario 64
3. Half-Life 2 and episodes
4. Resident Evil 4
5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (currently playing through it!)
6. Super Mario World
7. Tetris
8. Super Mario Galaxy
9. Halo 3
10. Yoshi's Island
11. LittleBigPlanet
12. Grand Theft Auto IV
13. Left 4 Dead
14. Street Fighter IV
15. Rock Band 2
16. Super Metroid
17. World of Warcraft
18. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
19. Civilization IV (yes, this is most of the reason I started playing it again)
20. Super Mario Bros. 3
21. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
22. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
23. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
24. Virtua Fighter 5
25. Final Fantasy XII
26. Medieval II: Total War
27. Mario Kart DS
28. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
29. Advance Wars
30. Company of Heroes
31. Bomberman series
32. Team Fortress 2
33. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2
34. BioShock
35. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
36. Burnout Paradise
37. Fallout 3
38. StarCraft (yeah!)
39. Super Monkey Ball
40. Wario Ware series
41. Race Driver: GRID
42. FIFA '09
43. Portal
44. Jet Set Radio Future
45. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
46. Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
47. EVE Online
48. Final Fantasy VII (this low?)
49. Rez HD
50. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

For me Civ3 is the best game - I play it endlessly and always look for more graphics updates from these forums. I suspect that I like it so much because i) I have never progressed beyond Regent; and ii) I thoroughly understand the game and its interface (except how to beat the AI). Graphically it works fine with just the right amount of information to suspend disbelief.

To each their own.
