I thought I'd make an all purpose travel thread.

So I haven't been anywhere outside of a few hundred mile radius since 2008. But later this month I'm probably visiting San Diego.

This coming weekend I'm going on a short road trip with my friend for a volunteer weekend (free food, free stay in a cabin, 4hrs work a day) at a campground in West Virginia. We're gonna stop in Fredrick, MD to visit an ex-girlfriend's sister who I haven't seen in over 10 years.

Anyone else going on any adventures in the near future (I know warpus always is :)).

I'm going to the library tomorrow.

Seriously, I don't get out much anymore. For me, that counts as travel.

I'm planning a week long vacation schedule to take place either late July or early August. I'm definitely going to Seattle, but I may or may not drive to Berkley to see Hygro.

edit: for emphasis this is a serious post and not a joke based on simply using Hygro's avatar. Seattle is for sure, still deciding on Berkley though.

What? Was that directed at me, because I have no idea what you're talking about.

I just got back from two days in San Diego on business and am hoping to wrangle a trip to London in June (business of course!). Then to St Louis for my daughter's wedding.

Are you trying to get rid of my "So I'm in Blank" threads?
No, I didn't even think of that. Just thought I'd start a general thread like the "goings/comings/new arrivals" type thread. You can still keep on with yours (as can warpus), this is just for quicky announcements of travels & maybe lead to some CFC meetups even. :)

I'll go to vancouver canada sometime. That's an actual trip for me, I can go to portland, oregon or seattle, washington pretty easily. Though I have mainly just gone to the hiking areas near those areas (been to both cities for a day). The portland marathon and the seattle marathon are late enough in the year (october and november) but I won't be in shape for those this year. Don't know if I will be around in 2016 for one of those, but that would be something specific I would take a trip for besides any time else I just decide to go to one of those cities.

i want to plan like a 25-40 mile backpacking trip but I have to brush up on the basics (yea I know for a 2 or 3 day trip it isn't really much difficulty, but I have not done anything except basic day hikes, generally <10 miles in one day).

other than that I might find my way to glacier national park. I don't see a super appeal to that compared to other national parks (e.g. crater lake national park) if I wanted to go to a specific national park but maybe I'll just go.

I would love to go to Vancouver, Seattle, other parts of BC, Washington state, Alberta, Montana..

All those places are sort of on my list, and I will probably try to merge them into one trip of some sort. I really want to go to a Sounders game in Seattle, maybe a Timbers game in Portland, I want to see some pretty scenery in Washington state, I want to visit glacier national park in Montana, hike in BC and Alberta..

There just isn't enough time for all the stuff I want to see. And flying to Vancouver costs as much as I paid to fly to Bangkok. So I havne't seen more of Canada yet - cause it's as expensive as Russian mail order bride twins.

I haven't traveled outside the region I'm in for quite a few years now. Don't know what I'll be doing this year.

I was just thinking that I need to renew my passport. The little card can be useful for those once-in-a-while moments that you need two forms of ID. As for travel, I have no plans but a long wish-list. As an American, it really feels like most of the Middle East is off my dance card, but maybe I'm overreacting.

I'd love to return to Asia, on a long tour, but unless you're self-employed taking months off work is more commonly referred to as "quitting." My fantasy scenario is for someone to offer me a cool new job that doesn't start until September. Then I could just bail on everything for 90 days. Unlikely to happen, though.

The most I've been able to take off all in a row is 5 weeks. My trip to New Zealand in 2010 was about 4 and a half IIRC. This time around (for my Norway trip) my boss said: "Fine, you can take off a month.".. I came back to him a couple weeks later and said: "Okay so I found a flight, I'd be gone from July 13th to August 14th. You cool with that?" .. He goes: "Yeah, okay. How many days is that?" .. Me: "24".. "That's five weeks, not a month" .. "Yeah but 13th to 14th".. "Ok fine, go for it"

So the precedent has been upgraded to a full 5 weeks. To be honest I usually feel like returning home after a couple weeks anyway - I don't know if I could travel for months at a time. I love to travel and all, but I start missing my bed and my usual routine.

I want to bring a family member who really wants to summit Mont Blanc to a city near the area, from which they could then travel to the mountain and come back after the climb. I think I heard Geneva (top of my list), Strasbourg, and Milan as possible destinations. I'm wondering if this is possible with these choices, which one would be the most doable, how much a whole week-long trip would cost, and what important things to consider.

I am back from Japan where I was for a month and it was really nice. Now I am home, Czechia, jobless playing PC games but soon will have to look for some living. I am considering couple countries in Europe including Russia and also US , Canada or Australia. Wish me luck...:)

My most interesting day in Japan was an anti-nuclear demonstration. The cops (man were they intimidating, it's like 90+F, 90%+ humidity and they come double timing down the street in perfect platoon formation in blue woolies and full riot gear...I was in a tee shirt and thought I was melting) knew all the protestors by name and it was all very organized. Turns out that protesting is done by hire. You want to express your disapproval of nuclear power, you hire a licensed protester. Their rates depend on the level of service you want; march and shout, carry a sign, refuse to disperse, actually get detained and taken into custody, whatever. The cops show up, check everybody's licenses are in order and find out who is on for what, and the event goes down. No one gets hurt, and everyone is satisfied. I assume the people who were opposed to nuclear power watched on TV and picked out 'their' protester. I talked to a couple of the protesters in a cafe after, where they were making plans to ride together to some protest about something else the next day.

If you decide to go to California, remember to bring plenty of water.
