Civ3 Conquests. I got error 28, renamed LSANS.FOT, started as administrator and the program will run. But, I still have a font problem, there's something wrong. There are pixels missing from the top of many letters. This is quite hard to read. I am using the game's original 1024x768 resolution, I haven't touched the .ini file. What could be causing this?

Perhaps these photos can do a better job than me. Notice how in the number '5', the top half and bottom half do not connect. There's a gap there. Likewise the '2' has one tiny part disconnected. 'o' and '0' have gaps at the top, and so on.

Have you at any time changed the font size in Control Panel -> Display ? (On Win7 there are three radio buttons: 100%, 125% and 150%. On Win8.1 there's a slider, or the radio buttons appear if you click a check box.) I don't know if this is your problem, but these type of text alignment problems are typical when you fool with those font settings. Put it back to 100%, reboot and try again.

Otherwise, is there any other sort of display trickery going on? Is this anything besides standard Vista or later with standard video drivers, standard DirectX and a cable-attached monitor?

I was going to ask if your display resolution matches your monitor resolution, but if that were the problem the screenshot would look OK.

Edit: Oh, see if you have Lucidia Sans font in your Windows fonts. I haven't messed with the fonts issue much, but I think LSANS.FOT needs to be installed into Windows fonts and removed from the Civ3 folders...but I might be remembering incorrectly.

Edit 2: Your civilopedia entry for Rome appears to be double-spaced, and mine isn't.

Edit 3: Hmmm, someone else seems to have had your exact problem back in April, and my font-size idea didn't help them: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=494370 . I haven't had this problem myself. They are using Steam...are you using Steam?

The control panel is on "Smaller - 100% (default)"

I do (did) have Lucidia Sans in my fonts. I copied the LSANS.TTF from Civ's folder into \windows\fonts, replacing the existing file. I don't do any typesetting on this machine so I didn't care about my font. The LSANS.FOT file was renamed in both the main Civ3 folder and Civ3/Conquests.

It's Windows 7 Ultimate. I haven't messed with any video drivers or such. It all "just works" and I never touch it. No trickery.

Not using Steam.

The only other thing I can offer is that I have installed Civ3 many times and never had the font error after a clean install; I only encountered the font error after having updated the OS after installing Civ3. You might try uninstalling and reinstalling Civ3.

I also just noticed your forum location and wonder if the PC or game localization settings make any difference. I am in the USA, and my PC and game are set up for US English. Clearly your game text is English; I wonder if the PC localization settings would make a difference? But it's just a thought; even if that were a problem I wouldn't know which setting might fix the problem.

It's Windows 7 Ultimate that was changed to English mode. Everything has worked quite well, remarkably. I haven't had a single problem with it. Shocking when you consider it's a Microsoft product. I just expected to have weird problems, but it hasn't happened.

Fonts always were my weak point of Windows system knowledge.
