Troubleshooting Connectivity

Yesterday we had the same problems. The game actually needs a connection to the internet at the same time you open a lan or direct ip game. We also noticed that at that point the ability to access the lan computers running Civ4 under Windows XP is interrupted. Our problem was that we couldn't see each others games in the lan lobby or get connected with direct ip. After 2h we gave up.
The day before we played over the internet via direct ip with no trouble. It would be nice to figure out the reason for this problem. I can't understand why the game connects to the internet for lan games. Maybe the programmers can cut it in the next patch?@Soren

What about Internet Connection Sharing? I have 2 computers with one of them being an ICS host (has 2 LAN cards). I can't play either direct IP or LAN games - the computers can't see each other in the lobby. The LAN connections are not firewalled (only the internet connection on the ICS host is, with WinXP firewall, both OSes are WinXP SP1, running Kaspersky as the antivirus software). If it's true that computers have to be connected to the internet, then wouldn't ICS get in the way?

My wife and I really want to play on the network as hot seat takes too long, especially when one of us is at war and the other has to wait while that person makes all the moves. We were really looking forward to simultaneous moves. :(

I can't play the game online, when I choose multiplayer and then LAN the connection became loading so long time that nothing happens, what this should be??

You can play it on line??

I try to make an account with gamespy on civ 4 and it says login attempt failed. so i make an account with gamespy over the internet and try to login but it says login attempt failed. Why is this?

I've got a new problem, one that I don't have high hopes of overcoming.

I just moved to college last week, and trying to connect through the college network to gamespy via warlords has gotten me nothing.

I'm guessing at the very least that they're blocking port 6667 (actually I'm sure of it, I've tested it with mIRC), but I have no idea about the other ports.

Are there any workarounds? Can I change which ports are used, and if so what should I try?

When i go to play internet games than create new account i enter all the stuff in and hit ok but nothing happens the screen just freezes for a few secs than nothing is it ment to say account created or something??. I tried just going back and than into login i enter in the say info but nothing just freezes for 2 secs than nothing stays on same screen am i doing something wrong or is it a tech problem?. I tried adding civ4 to my firewalls "exception list" and turing of my firewall all together.

when i try to connect to internet. with my correct name and password. nothing happens. that 'login' button apears. but no matter how many times i click. it never logs me in. and i checked that fire wall exception list in the install too!.

any help?

I have a Gamespy account, and I've double checked that it's active and that I have the correct password and such. However, whenever I try multiplayer via Gamespy on either CivIV or Warlords, nothing happens. That is, I type in my password and name, then when I click login, the background graphics will pause for a moment, but then nothing happens. I've turned off all firewalls, and double checked most of my router settings that I know of (I connect via a wireless home network). What's wrong?

I'm itching to play online!

i had a wireless router too and had the same probelem, i now have just a regular cable connection, BUT STILL THE SAME PROBLEM!

this is what happens when a game sells its soul to Gay spy. makes me angrryyy

I have an issue with a direct IP game.

Both me and the person I want to play with both are on a wireless router and we are having trouble connecting to each other. I've tried putting the IP of the router as where to connect but the game just times out. Do I have to bring down the router and use a direct land line connection every time I want to play CIV?

you have to start a new game (or scenario) and the other Direct IP player has to enter your IP (CLIENT) address in the JOIN section.

I had this problem. My solution was to start a brand new email account somewhere, and then create a new CIV4 account through Multiplayer CIV4, using the new email account as a reference. I did NOT create the new account through the Gamespy website.
It solved the problem completely.

you don't click lan. fixed :)

I have a really weird experience with multiplayer via Gamespy. My friend hosts a game, and I can join. If my friend loads a saved game, I can't join his game and time out. However, if my friend first hosts a new game which I join, then quits and loads the saved game, I can join his game. To clarify, he doesn't have to start a new game, he just has to "stage" it without starting. I'm a bit baffled as to why it's like this.

I've got another friend who I play Civ with where he could join a new game but couldn't join a saved game, so I'll have to see if the same strategy works with him.

Happy Days jdubs You the TopDog

Thank You

I tried playing through gamespy and sometimes things are fine but sometimes I can't see the game list. All there is is an empty box with no games listed. Anyone know what causes this?

I am surprised at the lack of good responses here as to these problems.

I have been reading this forum (along with all possible sorces of info) for weeks and have not seen an official responce to these problems. What I am saying is that this is the sadest support for a software package that I can think of. I play a few top end PC games and what I am used to is when alot of users have an issue, shortly there after, up will pop a well done discription of possible solutions. Allthough not always straight from the developers it is usually from someone or organization with very close ties.

My problem with this software is the same as many postings on this site. I can not get past the multiplayer / gamespy login screen. New accounts, old accounts, firewall, router, it does not matter, it does nothing. I have a Dell XPS system that handles everything I have thrown at it, including online flight simulation which is one of the most taxing applications you could do. Often half a dozen applications are running on the net. The fact that this one program cannot make a simple connection to gamespy for dozens of it's users is pretty sad. The fact that the developers don't seem to give a crap is beyond belief and puts it at the bottom of the barrel as far as support goes. I can not tell if there are folks on this site that are linked to Firaxis or 2K, I can tell you that with my other software apps I know how to get information to and from the developers. I usually don't have to ask, they usually supply because they are on top of the issues.

As things stand at this point, I would think twice prior to purchasing any product produced by either of these companies. I very much enjoy this product and continue to play alot of single player but I amazed at the lack of support.

I will of course continue to watch for the solution to this problem for I believe it would increase the enjoyment to play with other fellow humans.

this is a fan site to Civ, best send an email to their techsupport staff on the firaxis site. but i agree completely. it is one of the worst, if not THE EFFING WORST GAME TO GET SOMETHING FIXED ON. grr:mad:

peace man.

Hey guys, I posted the same thing here, but it's not getting any traffic, and this looks like a better place for it anyways.

Ok, here's the situation.

Two computers, one the pitboss machine, and one the game machine.
Linksys BEFSR41 v4 router.
Static IP's on both CPs, port 2056 (UDP & TCP) forwarded to pitboss machine.
Windoze and Norton firewall off on the pitboss machine.
Both PC's patched to 2.08

I can connect via the internal IP of the pitboss machine from the gaming machine, but no one else can connect via the external IP. Any suggestions?

Get the error message that someone cant connect to me in some multiplayer games, and ask me if I set up firewall correctly. I have, whats the deal?
