Tupac02-Ghandi the Conqueror AWE

Pre-turn.
I've got tupaclives' notes minimized for reference in starting off. Look for MM options but little to do everything looks pretty good. Raising lux slider to get rid of several clowns would cost more than keeping the clowns. A lot of unhappiness. This much war and only 3 luxuries hooked up. Entertainers get to keep their jobs in a lot of towns. Set science to zero and replace the entertainer in Babylon with a single Scientist. Change Bombay2 to infantry.
Hit Enter

IT
Our Cavalry fortified on mtn. next to Persian choke kills 5 cavs of different nationalites before succombing to a Chinese Cav. Greek ironclads pillaging our homeland. Greek ironclad attacks our ironclad and redlines it, but we win. Chinese gathering outside of Babylon Choke.

Turn 1) 1730 AD
Upgrade 8 cannon to artillery. (we're at +314 gpt right now. Industrialization due in 36)
Redline everything near our cities with cannon and artillery. Nothing to attack with though. Kill Chinese Cav on mtn. next to Persian Choke with our Cav Army.
Founded Blacksburg under infantry army

IT
No AI attacks. Injured units retreat, only to be replaced by healthy ones. We need some attack units to take advantage of the artillery by picking off the damaged enemy units.

Turn 2) 1735 AD
Again redline all enemy units around Persian choke. This time manage to kill a few, although I lose a rifle attacking a Greek Cav on a hill. Upgrade 6 more cannon. Reinforcements arrive from mainland. Set the really unhappy cities to building Settlers.

IT
Chinese land a solo infantry unit on a hill next to our empty town of Lyons in the homeland.
Again, no attacks. Injured enemy units leave, but fewer replacements arrive this turn.

Turn 3) 1740 AD
I don't have much to deal with the Chinese infantry next to Lyons. 2 Cavalry built last IT, that's it other than a bunch of outdated units. I attack the infantry with a Sword to try to soften it up, he manages to take 1HP off of it without promoting him (I know it was risky). Attack with a Cavalry. It was close, the infantry was redlined but beat our Cav. This time the infantry was promoted, however, so he goes up to 2 HP. I figure he won't attack while injured, and fortify the other cav in Lyons. One cav due this next IT so I short rush 3 more to deal with the infantry next turn. Time to keep a small contingency force in the homeland. (If we had one, I sent it to the front)
9infantrylanding.jpg

Upgrade several more cannon. Again redline everything around Persian Choke, and manage to kill a bunch. No losses on our part.
More reinforcements arrive from mainland.

IT
Chinese attack Persepolis!! Suicide 6 Cav vs. our Rifle armies. They did manage to do some damage though. They even attack Blacksburg containing the infanty Army, suiciding 2 cav there. Greek galleys covered by ironclads head toward our homeland. Wonder what they'll bring. They've been relatively quiet at the front.
Chinese infantry in our territory moves N toward undefended Hyderabad. He's on a mountian now, will be tough to kill.
Greek ironclads continue to pillage homeland every turn.

Turn 4) 1745 AD
Upgrade several more cannons. Redline everything near Babylon Choke & Persian Choke and still have a bunch of active artillery. Move them to Persepolis to redline the stack of 4 Chinese infantry that is S of Blacksburg.
Go after Chinese Infantry on mountain. 1st Cav redlines him but retreats, 2nd wins easily and is promoted to Elite!
Settler in Babylon Choke ready to go 3 tiles SW, but need offensive units to be able to advance.
The area around Persian Choke is mostly clear. I think the AI focus is going to be shifted to Persepolis & Blacksburg. Begin to push outward from Persian choke to clear the line for reinforcements. Move worker stack to hill W of Persian Choke to rail the one tile necessary to get Persepolis on the rail network. Cover them with an infantry and a rifle army.

IT
China only civ to attack. They send some of their yellow-lined units after our Cav on the mtn. S of Persain choke. He kills 4 infantry and a cav before yielding to a redlined cav. China takes another crack at Persepolis and Blacksburg. We kill 3 infantry and 3 cavalry.

Turn 5) 1750 AD
Clear out remaining enemy units around Persian Choke. Move more artillery into Persepolis to damage enemy units there. Kill several with cavalry raids. Pillaging Army moving towards China's visible rubber resource (NE of Xinjian). They have another one somewhere that I haven't seen. Moved Settler to the spot suggested by tupaclives (3-SW of Babylon Choke). Can found a city next turn.

I've been really slammed, and have had the save long enough, so I'm going ot call it a night here.

Post Turn:
Thanks for your patience, and letting me continue in this game. While it wasn't a barnburner turnset, it was my most successful since France. For the first time in a while I've witnessed a little progress first hand rather than read about it. The front has moved to the Babylon Choke, (as yet unnamed), Blacksburg, Persepolis line. I didn't spend the gold accumulated this turn, all cannons have been upgraded to artillery. We can now either upgrade some rifles or turn research back on. We should consider researching towards Motorized Transportation as fast as we can so we don't get caught too far behind the curve. We might be able to field another pillaging army soon which should help slow the AI's progress. We've got to acquire 317 more tiles for domination. So we will see some tanks this game. Good Luck to the next player.

****The Save****

Good stuff McLman things are looking great! My view is that from here on in we can just go a steady, consistent march. Every now and then we might get a sudden burst but for the most part I think from here on it will be a war of attrition.

Also we have potentially, many many pillaging armies. 4 Infantry can more than cover a rifle army until tanks arrive. Then the extra hp will make a difference. I'd suggest to Markh that he sees if thats a feasible option, as the more pillaging armies in the field, the less powerful troops we have to fight.

Haven't taken a peek at the save yet but I'd say once we have our cannons all upgraded, and a few infantry here and there, we should turn up research as much as we can and look to get to Espionage soon. Once we get to Espionage, we can steal our way to parity, then research what the AI doesnt have.

Good work again McLman, nice to see a bit of luck returnign to you :goodjob:

Sorry guys. I am out of order. My modem is broken. I am sitting at another pc from where I cannot get the save. I can take the save on Monday when I am at work.

Good work McLman. I'm glad you got a bit of luck this time around. If we can get a somewhat straight front line diagnally with Blacksburg, Persepolis and like 2 other cities we would be sitting pretty with our back 2nd core protected. Hopefully the AI will continue to dump a few random units here and there on our original core instead of a mass invasion force.

Would it be a good idea to keep a few artillery pieces back to deter ships from bombing the crap out of our shore? I was thinking of bombing a few of those Greek ironclads so they only get a one good shot in before they retreat. Just some food for thought.

One more question...should we disband those outdated units in our core and replace with a few infantry? It looks like we still have a few left.

I was thinking of sort of mobile MP's. They could defend and/or attack any random units that land on our core. That is if we can keep our rail line intact with all the bombing. Those warriors and swords aren't exactly effective in this era.

lurker's comment: In a word, yes. In my experience, the AI will almost always retreat a damaged ship rather than push on with it. This includes troop transports. So if you ding anybody appearing offshore, you'll likely send it home to mommy. I've stood off a number of naval invasions this way. Very easy to do with rails and arty.

It's a great thing to put some holes in AI galleons or transports and have them turn back without discharging their troops. It's even better, of course, when you have bombers on hand to just send them to the bottom.

I might be wrong, but I don't think bombers have lethal bombardment in Vanilla. I know they don't with land units, are they able to sink naval units?

No bombers cannot kill in Vanilla. But I think simplemonkey is right in that the AI will retreat a hurt naval unit rather than push forward and risk losing it. So my thought is still keeping some artillery pieces behind to ward off naval invasions/bombardment.

lurker's comment: Doh! :cringe: Ya know, I bought a copy of vanilla on eBay to add to the PTW and C3C that I already have, just so I can keep up with these vanilla games. (Or maybe even join one someday, who knows?) I keep forgetting the differences. Yep, no lethal bombing runs in vanilla, but damage is usually good enough. Ships can't heal at sea, so that's a long return trip for the AI.

Here it is :

0) 1750AD : looks good, just do some micromanagement
turn on research again : industrialization in 7 at 50%

IBT : we lose a few units, but all in all quiet
Wall Street is in and income jumps from +18 to +36, research to 60% -> industrialization in 5
Did I mention that I hate bombardment from ships. This is getting annoying.

1) 1752AD : We take Marathon. Just one rifle in it, but it killed a cav and reduced our cav army considerably
lose an army on a Infantry. Somehow my game is very strange. I may need to reinstall to put the RNG back to normal.

IBT : China takes Marathon and Persia puts a new city in that area. Both will be gone soon

2) 1754AD : Bangalore2 is built to close the front
we get a leader and form an army

IBT : no fights

3) 1756AD : Marathon is ours again

IBT : several bombarded Greek ironclads go home, one suicides against one of our ironclads

4) 1758AD : found Calcutta2

IBT : China moves cannon fodder to Persepolis

5) 1760AD : we take Susa and raze it

IBT : all Greek ironclads go back, what a nice silence
Industrialization is in -> espionage in 6

6) 1762AD : the usual redlining and killing

IBT : getting quiet in the IBTs, just many units entering and leaving our territory

7) 1764AD : found Lahore2

IBT : nada mucho

8) 1766AD : found Karachi2

IBT : nothing

9) 1768AD : we have another cav-army

IBT : nothing

10) 1770AD : bombing and killing

I have left New Dacca open and somehow the AI seems to be mad about it. They send all their units into our territory to reach there.
We have 4 arties at home which I used to bomb the pesky Greek ironclads. I have managed to sink a few and it is much more quiet there.

Next turn there will be 3 fully healed cav armies available, so I would push forward. Combined with a defensive army and the arties in Karachi2 we can take cities quite well. It is slow, but we have no other alternative with Persia and China having infantries in their cities.

A pic of the new front.

Good turnset, I'll pick this up tomorrow hopefully, I have to finish off Tupacatha's Most Excellent Adventure first.

Argh, I just noticed that the wounded cav at Bablyon choke could reach the worker stack there. Please take care of this. Sorry.

Great turnset Markh. We have really pushed things back. Hopefully we can start developing core #2. China will fear Ghandi's wrath next. Hopefully we can start after the Greeks before we run out of time.

By way, that island in the bottom right hand corner would be a nice territory addition. I think all tiles on it are blocked though, we may need marines...and who said marines were worthless. (I think I may have screamed that at my computer a few times but whatever).

I must be the only one who check this thread at least 3 times a day from work! I get so happy when someone actually posts. It helps my day go by faster. I guess I should probably work huh?

Pre-flight:

Things look alright, som changes needed though. Take the rifle out of Ur to cover the worker stack and so have to switch 1 of its citizens to a taxman but there is no production reduction. Notice an elite infantry in Karachi2 so attack the redlined Aztec settler pair (musket) and win producing my first leader of the turnset! (1-0)
Espionage is in 2 so I'll save him to rush the Intelligence Agency.
Also we have just 25 cavs yet we are building infantry all over the place, why? We need cavs and arty like you would not believe! Infantry are great for covering but what are we going to pick off the redlined guys with... and how are we going to redline them? Switch a few builds from infantry to cavs or arty. Also why are places like Dacca building infantry? Due to corruption they are getting 1spt and so i sell the raxs in those sorts of cities and set them to arty or ships. Also take some cities off infra as they are hopelessly corrupt and infra wont help them. MM for a bit more commerce and shields here and there. For example, fishing village 1 has 2 taxmen working in it , when there are free costal tiles :nono:... I named it its job, I cant make it any clearer than that, working the coast nets another +2gpt (more than the taxmen) and there were about 5-6 other examples like that. Lets take a look at what we can do with MM the core guys, I can't stress how important it is.
Great work with the pillaging, China has no rubber :D

IBT - Injured guys run away, fresh troops replace them five-fold. China drops a cav off by Ur.

Turn 1 - Start by redlining what I consider to be a threat this turn but have practically nothing to pick them off with... Still manage to do it though (13-0). Manage to scrape together 15 arty to go with the Infantry army and the cav armies to go on the attack. Pretty quiet really, nothing really interesting just clearing out guys. This is gettign easier every turnset :goodjob:

IBT - Lose an ironclad around our home continent but redline the attacking ironclad. And espionage comes in, turn off research and set to medicine.

Use the leader to rush the Intelligence Agency in Capital City.

Now guys I'm stopping here because I want to know what the teams opinion is.

1) Do we want to shut off research and just steal from here on in?
2) If so what do you think we should steal first.
3) What is your opinion on the Vanilla/PTW thing that allows you to steal 2 techs at a time?

My answers are

1) Yes we do
2) Medicine to open up a path to Sci-Method, then communism (for the police stations not the government) and if anyone has sci-method that ahead of communism (the sooner we get hoovers we can rush factories and become unstoppable industrially)
3) I am ok with it in SP games, however I'm not so sure in SG's. Does anyone know what the RBC opinion of it is? If its listed as an exploit by them then I would vote to not being allowed to do it, if its listed as dastardly then I'm alright with it. Can someone check?

lurker's comment: Exploit (I'm not surprised)

My votes :

I would say stealing.
The way to Scientific Method -> Theory of Evolution -> Hoovers
No exploits, so one at a time
