UA Elimination Thread

Ancién Regime is not very useful IMO. If you go for a cultural victory with 3-5 cities, it gives 6-10 :c5culture:, not very useful at all. And it only lasts untill steam power. If I wanted to expand, I would pick a civ like Rome or Russia that was good at it. The Songhai's UB, the Mud Pyramid Mosque gives 4 :c5culture: per city that it is built it, with no maintenance cost! If you get Philosophy early and build these in all your cities, you will have an ability better than France. Another strategy is yo build monuments in all cities, adopt the Tradition policy that gives you a free culture building in each city, and you immediately have these in 4 cities.

Of course Songhai will produce better culture once it gets its Mud Pyramids up but you can't measure things like that. Building them costs time and hammers which France can use for other things. It is called opportunity cost and Frances UA has zero opportunity cost. Also since France starts getting extra culture from turn one they have accumulated quite lot of it once Songhai even thinks of building its UB. With liberty that advantage is even more clear when you get your free settler and worker so much faster. Sure Songhai may at some point in time catch Frances lead but that is not certain. In civilization early game advantage can snowball into a massive lead that others cannot hope to match. I'm not saying Songhai is a bad civ and in fact I really like their UB but you have to take costs into equation and its very hard to beat free stuff from turn one.

Also you should subtract 2 from the one you are down voting not 1. I corrected it again with my vote.

France: see above.

Japan: A lot of people seem to love Bushido but it really isn't that powerful in reality. It may save a unit here and there but you really can't leverage it properly as it way better to move wounded units into back ranks to heal than risk losing them even with Bushido. It is great ability for the retarted AIs but human players should be able save their units.

*I'm going to have to say that many people underrate Japans UA. Maybe its different in mp, but in SP having your units always fight at full strength is an enormous benefit. If warmongering is your thing, you can steamroll cities and CS's very easily, with far fewer units than you might realize. And if you prefer peace, the maintenance costs you will save by being able to field a much smaller number of defenders is almost like a secondary econmic boost to the UA.
*Similarly, I think China's UA is overrated. Sure the faster first GG is nice, but after that, the benefit is sort of lost. Sure you can get some GA's, but for my money, play Persia if you want a golden age benefit.

egypt-building wonders is always important no matter how you want to play and being able to build the early wonders (which have some of the best bonuses) faster means that you not only get a benefit that another civ doesnt but you also make other civs waste production. i guess you either really like it or dont

china-great generals are ok but the other great people are more useful and having more of them doesnt really help you in victory all that much

French bonus gives a great boost in the beginning that can have profound effects in the late game, too.

China's is only particularly good if you're a warmonger.

It's a good thing the results won't be corrupted in any way.

Korea rivals Babylon for my 2nd most favorite civ. Any research UA has my attention.
Same reason as Poomermon

Also, I started a game with France today, I must say, I was wrong about before. Still not one of my favorite UAs, and I will not vote it up, but I will not vote it down either.
I guess I had been very unlucky in my other games playing as France, maybe that put me of the civ.

Same reasons as last time:
Persia: I like how various usually builder achievements like policies, wonders, great people, surplus happiness can lead through a military bonus through golden ages. And that extra move makes warfare special too.
Japan: that bonus doesn't make warfare all that special.

Russia- extra iron is only useful if you are clumsy or very unlucky. Otherwise a boring and weak UA. Might work if strategics were valued more by the AI (especially if they depleted over time)

Siam- Extra oomph from city states opens up a lot of flexible playstyles. Would be even more fun with additional city state types.

* Extra Production (especially in the early game) is an enormous benefit. Sure the double resources are generally only useful to sell (at least early), but seriously, how can anyone not use the benefit of extra hammers?
* Sorry, China. You may have one of the best UU and UB's, but your UA is seriously lacking.

Korea is awfully fun to play, giving the game three good tech-focused UAs. As for Russia, I like the idea of extra strategic resources for use and sale, but it doesn't seem to come up much in most games. Maybe I should play more games with sparse resources, but with ubiquitous city states and friendly AIs, oil and uranium are always available anyway.

Babylon: Great scientists makes immortal a cakewalk.
Viking: Sorry, but the way the game is set up makes island maps and amphibious attacks extremely boring. The dumb pathing always makes me click on a unit 10 times before it gets in the water  For this reason I don't really like VF. If they improved gameplay on water maps I might like it more.

India: Population means gold, production, and science and CiV isn't geared towards expansion anyways due to the happiness issue. India fixes this by having huge amounts of happiness as well as a ridiculous population. With the new Landed Elite and Tradition Finisher/Monarchy, India could quickly become a population and commerce powerhouse. The population can really help out with science and makes culture games a blast. Certainly one of the best civilization UA's, although the UU/UB are a different story.

Japan: Purely militaristic UA's are meaningless, they don't change much unless you are in MP and only save you a few units. It is way easier as others noted to simply send a damaged units to the back of your army to heal safely before rejoining combat. It is safer and more effective. It isn't the worst by any means of all the UA's, but out of the current options I have to say that it doesn't shine among the rest.
