I’ll go one step further than that, and also request the ability to rename the civ you transition into. Or add a feature that allows you to better blend the names of the civs you chose.

I like the civ-switching mechanically, but it feels awkward that your civ is pretty much losing your linguistic roots after transition - which I think adds to the displeasure that many folks have about it. You can give non-controversial explanations for Shawnee>America all you can, but they become so much less believable when your people abandon the native language and start naming everything in American English. The current city naming process doesn’t make me feel like the original civ’s culture is peacefully merging with the new one, but rather that the new one has completely taken over. As much as we remind ourselves that Civ is not real history, it’s hard to shake off certain perceptions from the latter. Otherwise we’d be have no issue adding Hitler as a leader, because hey he can pick Democracy in your playthrough and befriend all his neighbors.

I get that “history is built in layers”, but would appreciate it if FXS allowed players to decide for themselves where and how such layers are reflected in their playthrough.
PROPOSAL

1. Whenever you choose a “game civ” (to get the “basket of uniques” it is) you also choose a “face civ” (default is to use your game civ as you Face Civ)

Face Civ determines your Civ name, City List, and Graphics style.

When you do an Age transition, this happens as a Narrative Event with rewards.
Change Name to new civ: Bonus culture to New Unique Civics
Keep Name as old civ: Bonus happy to next celebration

Then you can edit the actual name of the “Face civ”

2. You can rename any settlement at any time…
However, during Age Transitions, and whenever you make a Town into a City, you have the option to decide if you will rename settlements that don’t match your city list..

Narrative Event:
it doesn’t match and you
keep it the same: small Happy lump sum bonus
change to match your Face civ: small unique civic culture lump sum bonus

If it does match…then small happy lump sum and no change.

****This might be disabled for MP at least in open multiplayer, and otherwise an option to disable.

I hardly ever rename cities, unless I'm playing multiplayer and having fun with friends.

BUT -- I don't see why this isn't a feature on release.
This reminds me of Age of Empires 4 lacking choose-your-colour on release.

Like really, I assume in programming, the cities are referred to by an ID or something and not their actual Display name.
So there should be no issue to changing the string that represents the Display name.

I think this could work for some people who aren't very fond of switching, but in that case I think it would be better for the face thing to be just civ name and city list, and maybe graphic style besides unique units/buildings from the civ you picked. And no gameplay thing at all. also likely still have the same end of era video from the actual civ you picked.

How am I gonna play Alexander without renaming all the conquered cities to Alexandria?

Jokes aside, I don't usually rename my cities, but I feel this is very much needed in a game where you are forced to change your civ. I want to rename all my cities in a French manner once I picked France.

When Civ 6 launched without being able to rename cities, didn't Firaxis imply that it was an oversight? I know they patched it in pretty quickly after release.

It's good to rename cities to local names (case in point, below, using Tasmanian names) :

Hopefully that's the reason. Seems plausible.

Like "Steve Smells," for example.

Someone on Reddit claimed in one of the streams that renaming cities be added "later" but I watched every single one, and I can't remember anyone mentioning it... might have to go back and watch after I finish the deluge of new civ content... does anyone remember this so I do not have to hunt this down to find out if I'm being gaslighted...

City names from Civ6 that always begged to be changed: Kawawachikamach, Whakarewarewa, Tanjungpinang ... get my drift?

I have seen it (one of the vids from this forum).
Unfortunately, I can't remember the name (too many vids))).
But the main idea was like this.
"You can't rename the city, but maybe this is intentional, so I wount rename it to something silly during preview"
Thats it.
Just an assumption.

I heard VanBradley say that in his video and i think some other minor english youtuber video (civminute or raptor-whatever) idk. I was wondering to myself if it was prompted to the developers in the antiquity, explo, or modern streams in a question... Honestly I personally cope with the idea that Firaxis didnt want YouTubers to start a controversy by renaming cities (but why would they allow people to name religions and show it in their videos if this was true...).

Renaming cities is important because most of the city names in Shawnee are describing things that usually don't exist in the civ cities radius. Do it for the 3 or 4 people who play this game and understandish Shawnee. Do it for chief and his history department dorf. I used to love perfectly renaming Cree towns. 7 bucks, Wabash. I also need to name generals, Tecumseh needs Blue jacket, Little turtle and Main Poc. Napoleon needs to go to the field.

This needs to be there. It makes no sense if I'm going from Greece to America (which is what I'm planning for my first game) that I still have cities hanging around called Athens and Sparta. Well... there is an Athens in Georgia, but hardly the same thing.

I mean, it's not just *one* Athens.

It.'s twenty-three Athens, seventeen Sparta, over fifty Corinth, three Rhodes, five Olympia, assorted Marathon, Syracuse, Ithaca, Ephesus, Argos, plus more that I haven't checked yet. Likewise for German cities, French cities, even worse for English cities...

If there's one civ in the game that can pretty much use *any* city name, it's America.
