UNGY-02 We like our people

sorry guys couldn't get to it tonight--I'll play tomorrow

I open up the save and make the iron+sailing trade with KK and we have settled Thebes on the iron. KK also has it.
I'll plan to build some defense--with our variant we are not as well positioned to respond to an AI attack as normal so I think a few extra units are worth it.

Agreed, settling up a future HE city building a steady stream of units would be great. For now I'd just mix unit production into the build queues.

Nice to see the IW+Sailing deal is still available.

At least Thebes was settled on plains so it's not a total waste. We'll get an extra hammer in the center due to the iron.

Looking forward to your turns, hopefully Kublai or Toku won't be getting their hands full. :)
I agree with pre-hiring units due to lack of :whipped:

OK-here we go:

IT we make the IW trade mentioned earlier:

I change research to pottery. It's too cheap to trade for and we can use a few grans. KK will not trade masonry--most likely he's building 'mids.

OB with Just.

850 Sparta char-phalanx

825...pottery in--masonry
Corinth lib-gran.

800...

775..

750 masonry in-poly.
GS born. I guess we should have talked about what to do with it. I'm a settler in this case, where we'll have plenty more coming. Question is where?
I decide capital.

Athens settler- lighthouse (queue).

725 Athens worker. Everyone's got math but nobody will trade it.

700 Thebes WB-gran.

IBT GG born in a distant land--oracle built.

675...

650 poly in-aesthetics. We get buddhism. another miss on the way. I decide not to wait and we take it. I change Thebes to a WB--should've done that earlier.

625...

IBT well look who shows up:

Civ4ScreenShot0290.jpg

his WB came from the direction of KK:

Civ4ScreenShot0291.jpg

he's backwards and I gift him poly to get him pleased.

600 I decide to OB with KK as Ragnar has hindu (not founder)
We meet the founder of hindu:

Civ4ScreenShot0293.jpg

she has what looks to be a beachead on our continent to the N of Just and we won't be doing much business with her for a while.

She's at war with Ragnar, and my gift to him earned us a -4 traded with my worst enemy with her:(

575 Athens worker-settler.
I OB with Ragnar as he may be on another continent.

KK has settled near us on the marble:

Civ4ScreenShot0295.jpg

550...
IBT Justinian builds buddhist shrine.

525..

Ragnar comes with a request:

Civ4ScreenShot0296.jpg

I decline.

500 GS born academy in capital. Corinth gran-bar

475...
450 Sparta pha-pha
425 aesth-lit
400..

375 KK takes hindu.
Athens settler--? I'm assuming we'll put the glib there.

I leave the settler unmoved--my guess is we want to settle the clams/rice spot.

Athens will pop borders next turn.

KK as Hindu means I think we'll end up at war with him sooner or later--probably sooner.

Nobody in WHEOOH tho.

Looking very good, sweet turns. The only dodgy part was gifting Ragnar polytheism. He's one of (if not the) AI that attacks ridiculously early so you could've assumed the Great General message was regarding him. But in the end it won't have huge consequences I guess. Justinian isn't likely to open his borders with Izzy, so we should be safe.

Our happy cap is simply unreal and it will grow even more the next turn as the gold will be hooked up. Later we'll have odeons and dye as well! :goodjob:

I don't like settling GSs, but that's mostly a difference of philosophy and not necessarily a bad move. I'm guessing we'll research Drama next for trade bait, cheap theatres and waiting for maths to get unlocked so settling him means we'll lightbulb philosophy some turns later and get pacifism later, but the positive and negative causes of both alternatives should be fairly balanced.

Come to think of it we might want to skip drama for now, even if cheap theatres are great. CoL should be researched first for caste system and we can't bulb philosophy right after drama now that we settled anyway, which imo puts us at meditation -> priesthood -> CoL -> philosophy and hopefully trade for maths/calendar/currency.

PS. Priesthood also opens up for a monarchy trade.

Yes I agree there. From where the WB came from I was guessing (hoping) we'd be able to get a offshore trade route and seemed a cheap way to get him pleased. Definately an error as since he was another religion and only trades techs at pleased we were shortly going to lose that opportunity.

As for settling the GS, I really wasn't sure on that but I figured with our variant we'd be going for COL and we'd have another GS for the tao bulb. It just seemed kind of a waste to leave them sitting around for that long.

I think settling was a good call.

From my experience with philosophical leaders it's easy to build aca + settle at least one GS and still have enought available to bulb towards lib. Especially with this capital it should be a piece of a cake. If we're running tight tech-wise we still can bulb lib directly. If we also bulb edu and philo, we'd need 3 GS - definitely doabe. If we start running CS soon we can settle another GS or build a second Academy I think.

Worst case we can burn a GS (or GA if one manages to get generated ) we can start a GAge and run pac for 8 turns.

Melior, are you able to play?

Nice turns, Ungy.

I would have joined Rag is his crusade -- Isabella is unlikely to have many friends anyways.

Settling the GS is fine for now, though I probably would have chosen a different city. Not a big deal as its biggest benefit will be over the next 50-100 turns, so long term optimal placement doesn't matter much.

I'll comment more later.

I thought about that pretty hard but decided that Ragnar will most likely not do us that much good and we do have the option to fix things with Iz later if we ditch the religion.
Not at all sure it was correct tho.

Can you explain why you would've chose another city and which? Athenes already has an academy, so...

So I'm looking at the save & here are some thoughts on how to proceed:

  • Athens will switch to GL as soon as Lit finishes. There should be no need to chopping, as no one else has Lit or even Aesthetics, for that matter.
  • Sparta can (fittingly) be our military center, so should I start HE there?
  • Corinth looks like a good IW candidate for down the road.
  • Rice-Clam city will be settled.
Research: If we go with Drama, we won't be able to trade it for anything without first breaking the Aesthetics monopoly. Priesthood-CoL looks like an attractive alternative. And, as pointed out already, Priesthood opens up Monarchy from tech trading, but ATM, it doesn't look like any of the AI's have it. Metal Casting is also good for the +2 :).

Any & all input appreciated. :) I will likely post my turns at some point on Saturday.

I think CoL route is the way to go. MC and with it forges are nice but forges are expensive and I'd rather have some infrastructure, military and specialists up before such buildings.

Not sure about GL being "safe". We haven't met all the civs so better be safe then sorry and chop some forests. You can also chop forests outside the BFC, towards KK's cities. In the BFC, there should be an even amount of forests remaining.

I like the specialisation you described. We'll soon want to move the palace (to corinth?) so it could be hybrid for a big part of the game.

Any plans to take out Justinian, team?

I would definately say priest-COL. With our variant we get a lot of use out of COL, and that also opens up the tao bulb. We should be able to trade for monarchy and math by then or shortly therafter. (I guess we also need to research med)

I like HE in Sparta--don't have the save ATM but I don't remember us having a 10XP unit yet. I'd build a few more units and definately leave the forest choke point as a defense against KK.

I'd also try and keep an eye on KK to see if he's got any stack approaching and maybe check every few turns to see if he's in WHEOOH

actually the first GS was settled, after that an academy was better than another settled GS.
As I understood it Olodune would've settle the GS in some other city

We were talking about eventually moving the capital, which means that an Academy/Bureaucracy capital would be a better long term settling position -- thats where I was coming from. Athens will be fine as well; its not as if we will be short of GSci's this game ;)

Edit: The academy/settle in Athens is probably the better choice if we go for the GLib there. If we do move the capital we should be ready to use another GSci for a second academy, however.
