the full helm is the main problem. i want a full helm with a faceguard. open faced helms were used in later years along with the lack of all armor besides the chest + helm. its kind of the same concept of you asking for a world war I era soldier and me giving you a vietnam era soldier. they are both just some guys wearing some clothes holding some guns but they are not the same.
as far as using a sword, i wanted the unit to be melee since that was indeed their primary role being shock troops(the pictures show them with guns but they also used swords. that is the whole point of having armor - they are melee units though supposedly the armor could stop musket shots as well. but generally the people wearing armor were going to be engaged in melee combat[pikemen] and those not wearing it were going to hopefully not be involved in melee[muskets].). they used swords on the infantry after/while letting off a few shots. if someone were to have made the unit i was going to add a gun to the back but only for show. there really isnt a way to show a unit is both ranged and melee since there is only going to be one animation so i was ok with the unit having a sword and not a gun since that is actually what i was wanting. i am using a carbiner and dragoon as the mounted ranged units(some of the art you first showed me i think).
it would have been a lot earier if the knight unit had a head to take off and add somewhere else but from what i remember it is just all body unlike most other units. the templars helm just isnt right either sadly. it looks liek there is indeed a way to do it though since it is obvious from the picture above that he did.
