Unit requests thread

check "Dale's Combat Mod" for tactical nuke ability

i also made a unit called "fusion bomb" which is still infinite range, but only affects one square with the nuke.

Can anyone make a Karl or Dora Seige gun like those used on the Eastern Front during WWII?

Karl Mortar
Dora Railway Gun

If any exist can you guide me to the right location. I have searched but found nothing.

The trouble is though that the Allies didn't really have anything comparable for a WW2 Mod and thus it would be cheating to give it a large range, but it would be inaccurate not to... I don't know whether either of those exist. I don't think so though...

Hey guys... I am working on a major addition to the game (almost done too... another month or so) but I need one (maybe two) unit graphic to help out... I will give you some credit too! I am looking for some kind of classical-renaissance "entertainment" unit like a jester...or bard or minstrel or something along those lines (but a jester with the hat for full effect would be the best :) ) Whatever it is, it needs to be fairly non-combat looking. (but then again...if he pulled out a dagger mid-combat... now that would be impressive too)

edit: a second unit might work too for a "troupe" as in a "comedy" or "drama" troupe.

Check the balseraph's(this is a FFH's civ) units in the FFH2 mod. They have units that you may like.

Thanks for the tip. I will check it out

I gather no one is interested in making big artillery pieces like Karl or Dora :(

Oh well, it would have been nice to include in my scenario but I will have to make do without them. I would try making but I dont have the software or knowledge required for 3D modding.

Search for Blender with your friend ...............................................google
then download it for peanuts and start to read tutorials. First you will learn how to make forms, and so on with textures, ... and rendering ... It requires some patience but if you really want them, you'd try it yourself.
I wish you luck in your quest, may the Force be with you !

Post #400 :cooool:

I will try and read up on the above but given the title of the thread I thought this was the area to post if 'those in the know' wanted to have a stab at any units.

As I said in my earlier post, its no problem if no one wants to make it and I can make do without it. Thanks anyway for the feedback :)

The problem is that 'those who know' are in minority (for example my to do list - have list of models for next year :D) - community needs new modelers and if you really want you'll learn it :) - year ago i did know complitly anything about 3d graphics

Unfortunately I was not fully aware of the situation as I have become active on this board only recently even thou I joined in 2003.

Can you tell me what approach graphics modders take with new units. Do you try to find the 3ds files/meshes on the web or do you build them from scratch. I looked at the Dora gun available on turbosquid and it scares me to think of trying to attempt that....yet on the other hand i see snafusmith mention that it takes him 3 days per unit!

try downloading a mod, playing it. then open the folder and click on the xml files and open them in notepad. just search around the file structure look about. play mods and do this, then check the Tutorials forum to learn all how to do everything. it is all there.

The XML files I am beginning to master as I already have started adding units for my Eastern Front scenario and printed off the tag reference guides from CivWiki already. I am trying my best to learn python with the help of Paasky and EmperorsFool. In addition I have just started to modify basic dds files for the mod so everyday is a learning curve for me.

With relation to my last question, what I need to know is do 3d savvy unit makers start from scratch or download their models/meshes from certain sites to build new 3d units?

The best results will come with starting from scratch, or from another Civ4 unit. It is hard to find models available at the right polygon count to make reasonable Civ4 units.

And learn how to texture! From experience (all from Civ4) a decent model will become an awesome unit with a great texture, but a great model can be severely dragged down by a bad texture.

Good luck!

I create all of my units from scratch. It really, really annoys me when people use models from other sources in Civ4. Not because they were from somewhere else, but because I don't know of many (1 or 2) that give credit to the original source. Like AlazkanAssassin said, it's easier to start from scratch anyway.

That's true. No matter how good a model is, without a good texture it will not be a good unit.
