Very quick noob SG

Just took a look at the save...

We've got a semi ugly french stack up in the north. Not sure that our two archers can hold out (or that our lone axe can weaken it enough)...

We're about 5 turns away from popping a great person in our capital! Its weighted heavily towards Prophet right now, with Engineer getting about 17%... If we obsolete Stonehenge before the GP pops - it will happen slower and there's more chance of it being an engineer. We could really use Divine Right (if that's what the Prophet will research), so keep that in mind.

JC's power graph is creeping closer to ours, so once the war ends, lets be sure any city near him is stocked up good!

Looking forward to the next turnset!

Hmm, I don't remember any french stacks with more than two units and they were axe/spear. Not to mention, there should be a stack of 3 or 4 of our own units (forget makeup, at least one sword and one cat), that should be in the north between paris and Rheims... Are you sure we are undefended there?

I can't open the save (at work), so I am not sure. If eektor is seeing this, i am sure he will keep an eye on them. As long as archers are fortifed long enough, they can hold out quite well. Coupled with city's cultural defense and archer's built-in city defense, an archer can easily be regarded as a strength 6~7 unit. Also check the archers for promotion. Sometime we left defenders unpromoted and forget about it until its too late.

So, we could pillage for 5 turns until GP is poped, and get some gold + tech from Louis. With pyramid and Parthenon (Paris has that, right?), I will not be so worried about the stonehedge's GP point obseleted by calendar.

One more thing, is the Gem-city settled? Better do it soon (should help rather hurt our economy) lest JC snatch it right under our nose.

Are we having OB with JC? If not, he will be making a very bad mistake settling at our side of the Penisula.

Um how do I insert pictures into the post?

I already played my turn set and am having some trouble finding out how to put pictures.

Edit: Its getting late, so I'll post the turnset tomorrow, but please let me know about the pictures.

Use the "Upload file" (at the bottom of the page just before the ads, you will see a bar with "Forum Rules - Chat Room - Upload File - Contact Us - Civilization Fanatics' Center - Archive - Top").

After uploading the pictures (unfortunately, you can only upload one at a time), click the "view folder" to verify that the pictures are uploaded. Hover your mouse over the picture link, and right click- copy link location to get the URL to the pictures you uploaded.

EDIT: Of-course, if you have other means of loading your screenshots to a publicly viewable webpage (such as personal homepage, imageshack or photobucket), you can use those instead of loading the civfanatics forum space. Just use the URL to picture as below.

To have pictures appear in a post, use:
Code:
(IMG)http://www.civfanatics.com/upload11/my-picture.jpg(/IMG)
change "(" to "[" and ")" to "]", and replace the URL with the URL to your picture.

I hope your morning is my night, then I can play around 10pm tonight, my usual SG time :) (8 hours from now).

or you can click the little paperclip icon located in the top row of the advanced edit screen. It will bring up a window that lets you upload 2 files at a time (to max of 5 per post). Then once you're done, that paperclip will now insert the file you want into the post and make it all purdy like!

you can also upload (and post) your save file with the same functionality.

Ok, let's see if this works.

First off, the world as it is when I got my turnset.

attachment.php

Hope that works.

Edit: Not especially how I wanted.

Edit2: Ok, that looks a bit better. How do i get it so it shows the image and not a link? The way you guys did it in the writeup?

Ok, I'm just going to do the writeup and put the SS as attachments on the bottom so GreyFox can play soon.

Goals:

1. Capture Marseille and make peace with the French.
2. Improve our GNP by building courthouses.

Turn 0: 940AD
Went through all the cities and changed the tiles being worked. I concentrated on bringing more commerce in without losing too much production.

Turn 1: 960 AD
Barcelona: Market -> Courthouse
Cordoba: Courthouse -> Worker (I wanted to make a worker to finish improving this city.)

I moved the axeman to help the swordsman take the city of Marseilles.

Turn 2: 980 AD

Turn 3: 1000 AD
Axeman killed the spearmen in Marseilles. Marseilles was automatically razed. :hammer: Woot! I got to use that smiley face.
Afterward I made peace for 130 gold and Calendar.
( I didn’t get a chance to pillage any improvements because I didn’t move the axemen by Seville on the 2nd turn. :( )

Turn 4: 1010 AD
Cordoba: Worker -> Archer (Is going to be used with the settler to make a new city by the gems area.)

Turn 5: 1020 AD
Cordoba: Archer -> Buddhist Monastary (We could use more science and also so we can build missionaries if we weren’t in OR)
Changed civics to OR. This was the earliest I could change, since before it said I had to wait before I can do another revolution. I didn’t get representation yet because I wanted to stay on hereditary rule for the extra happy faces because of a military present.

Turn 6: 1030 AD
Barcelona: Courthouse -> Buddhist Monastary

Barbarian archer and swordsman appear up north.

Turn 7: 1040 AD
Axeman killed barbarian swordsman

Turn 8: 1050 AD
Axeman lost to barbarian archer.
Madrid: Market -> Aqueduct (Want to build this for a possible building of the Hanging Gardens. Also, we needed more health in Madrid so it can grow bigger.)
Seville: Market -> Courthouse
Cordoba: Buddhist Monastary -> War Elephant (Would be nice to have some fast units for next war to pillage with):hammer:

Turn 9: 1060 AD
Axeman killed the barbarian archer
Barcelona: Buddhist Monastary -> War Elephant

We are in the + gold. Its +1 but that’s a start. I was going to make a screen shot of this but I decided to wait for next turn and next turn it decided to drop to even. Oh well)

Turn 10: 1070 AD
Hurrian: Courthouse -> Market
St John is born in Madrid. (I put this in sleep in Madrid. Next person can decide what they want to do with the great prophet.)
Santiago founded. (I put on the build a lighthouse. Feel free to change it if you don’t want to do that first.)

Comments:
I read a lot of good suggestions before I started my turns. I tried to keep those things in mind while I was playing. Unfortunately I made a mistake with the axeman at the beginning and so didn’t get a chance to pillage any of the improvements.

I was building all cottages around Cordoba because I wanted it to have lots and lots of commerce. I think the new city Santiago should do the same.

I think we should finish off the French since they have only 2 cities left. Of course we should wait till we have built our courthouses and we are able to up our science rate to 70% I think.

I was thinking of building some missionaries to spread Buddhism around, instead of waiting for the religion to spread on its own. Didn't get to it, but that could help us money wise.

Oh, I am open to criticism so feel free to tell me what I should have done or any ways I can make a better write up too.

Excellent turns eektor, things are looking up. Good job founding Gem city too.

GNP is looking good - and we are first in everything else that matters. I assume the two ahead of us are either in a GA or financial civs - but we're not far behind.

Don't worry about the pillaging, if I recall - there wasn't that much to pillage anyway...

We should probably take care of that "little barb" problem in the north. How about a few fog-busting units? Aren't there also some city sites in the north? Ahh, there I go again - wanting to expand... Ignore me :)

The cottages are a good idea - I've been building more of them in my private games. Just make sure we have a production city or two so that we can get wonders when we need them.

I have one axeman up north that I was going to put on the hill but I think I fell one or two turns short, but I agree with the fog busting units. We could use one more axemen up there.

Actually Cordoba has a lot of production as is even if you put cottages in the leftover tiles. Also, when those cottages become towns and we switch to universal suffrage Cordoba would have a lot more production. The gem city wouldn't have much production though.

As for expanding, I'd rather take the last two French cities or expand on the western island before founding cities up north.

Got it!

Actually, you did very well, eektor. Our economy, as expected, did not fall too far back behind due to the war. Don't worry about not pillaging ... it wasn't that much gold.

For the SS, I see you use the "attachement" method. I don't know how to display the images using the "attachment" method, only the "upload file" method I described in my previous post. Try that. Somehow, when you use the attachment method, the resulting URL is a dynamic (php) link, instead of a static link. The {IMG} tag works only with static link.

Will be playing soon, I see my turnset is again a quiet one, now that peace has been restored. So objectives is to get our infracstructure up. Let's see if I can move our GNP to 1st place :wow:

Great turns eektor. I can say we've really put the French out of contention. We can pick them off whenever.

Also, unless someone has changed it, we have never had OB with Ceasar. I figured he'd plop a city to our south. Is it even coastal? What a waste.

Just to be safe, I would like to keep on JC's good side, at least until we get something to counter his Prats.

The Roster:

player 1: Maquis -----
player 2: oldbustedjorn -----
player 3: eektor - Just played
player 4: GreyFox ---- UP
player 5: bobrath ---- On deck

Yea, that southern city is a good candidate for RAZING... :hammer:

Let's not flip JC off for the fun of it just yet, but like Maquis said, we can't handle the praets right now...

JC only seems to have like 5 cities south of us, so we'll want to take that eventually - we may have a shot at domination if we can find a weak overseas AI.

Speaking of that, lets get to optics so we can meet other civs... Don't totally sacrifice all other techs, but when there isn't another strong choice for immediate benefit, lets go to optics...

GJ eektor.

Expansion:
Western Jungle island or Northern Wasteland? I think cities in either location would be about the same distance from the capital so no diff there. Going West would deny JC those sites, and that's not a bad thing. Going North would provide more resources including a whale in the far, far north. West would require a lot of jungle chopping to combat the unhealthy nature, but our expansive trait helps with that. North means some massive roading and minimal growth. I'm not really sure which will help us more.

What I do know is that we've got some gaps:
1) Exploration. We still haven't even sailed around our entire contient! Capturing Paris gives us an eastern port, lets use it asap and find out what the close world looks like.
2) General Worker Progress. Hurrian still isn't connected via roads with our empire... wassup wit dat? Lets get workers clearing jungles/hooking up the calender improvements (Sugar and Spices for now).
3) Corruption. While Orleans (still french) would probably be the best site for an FP, Paris will do in a pinch.
4) Power. Keep JC happy, but he will stab us sooner rather then later. We *have* to be ready for him to bring SoDs on us.

I put those in the order of importance in my mind.

About our Great Prophet (woot!), if he can give us Divine Right... then I'd say take it and get the Spiral Minaret working. It will really help our GNP. I'm not sure what else he would research towards, but if its sub-optimal then the christian shrine is a much lesser alternative to improve our economy - we'd have to spread chrstianity to many of cities to get any real effect tho.

Machinery is required (I believe) for optics along with Compass. The other research options would be Literature, Drama, Enginnering, Feudalism, and Divine Right. (only looking at a tech tree right now and not the save). I think Compass >> Optics is the obvious choice.

There isn't a screenshot that shows it, but I connected Hurrian to the other cities with roads. I completed 2 plantations that I remember so spices or sugar or both are hooked up (I forgot which one though).

I agree with your points, bobrath. I didn't go around the continent because we had no OB with JC and I somehow got the idea that you guys didn't want to have OB with JC. Without OB there wasn't a way around the Romans to explore the other side of the continent.

Objectives:
Research for Divine Right, Optics
Bring our GNP to #1 position :cooool:

Inherited Turn (1070 AD)
Was looking around for cities to whip.
All will cost >2 pops for the courthouse, so I will whip them later.
Paris need to be whipped, since it only has a cultural border of 1.
Thus Paris is working in all tiles. Also, Paris has a crappy 1 culture/turn.
Thus, I swapped courthouse to temple ...
Paris begins: Buddhist Temple
Madrid grows: 12
Cordoba finishes: War Elephant
Hurrian grows: 9
Toledo grows: 8
Found 2 galeys ?:smoke:?? Move them up north for fog busting.

Turn 1 (1080 AD)
Whipped temple at Paris, then ...

Axeman promoted: Combat I
Axeman promoted: Cover
Axeman defeats (4.45/5): Barbarian Archer

Turn 3 (1100 AD)
Madrid grows: 13

Rheims finishes: Courthouse

Turn 5 (1120 AD)
Rheims begins: Library
Cordoba grows: 10
Hurrian grows: 10
Toledo grows: 10
Rheims grows: 6

Madrid grows: 14
Toledo grows: 11
Barcelona finishes: War Elephant
Toledo finishes: Lighthouse

Turn 10 (1170 AD)
Research begun: Optics
Barcelona begins: Harbor <- remember to built these, quite useful (+50% trade)!
Toledo begins: Library

After turns notes

- Nobody complain about my use of the autologger, so I continue to use them :D

- Hanging Gardens will be built next turn ... :mischief:

- JC actually is fored to set up a crappy city, I foresee a cultural flip real soon:
VQS4-crap-city.jpg

- I'll say I met my objectives satisfactorily (not exemplary, but satisfactorily)
- Divine Rights is learnt, And I started Optics just at the ast turn :D
- Let's look at our demographics:
VQS4-demographs.jpg

- very close to number 1, a mere 1 gpt less (actually I checked, we were #1 at turn 8 or 9 :crazyeye:)

- The world:
