Very quick noob SG

Great turns!! I can't wait to have our island to ourselves :mischief:

Seriously though, JC is out of hand with those settlers - he's just spamming them!!

Should we raze the JC city on the west Isle? Do we even have enough units there to defend/attack?

Somehow I don't think there is going to be any war during my turn. Good luck Maquis and oldbustedjorn on the upcoming war.

Well maybe I'll get to actually END a war instead of start and leave stacks of units everywhere. Doesn't matter, as long as I get a little :hammer: in somewhere, you know, just to satisfy the craving :satan:

I think we've balanced the war effor and building fairly well. If only I could do that good in my private games!!

OK... here we go.

My goals:

1) Get Zora to expand, and get the horses hooked up ASAP.
2) Trade mission to China, to get some gold in the coffers.
3) Spread some buddism to our overseas friend, QSH.
4) Get ready, and start some :hammer: on JC.

I started off a little weary, but I think overall I did well.

This is my first post using the autologger. Hopefully it is helpful (It seems like there is a lot going on!)

I'll just try to highlight some of my thoughts/observations in addition to the autolog.

Turn 0:
I check out Zora on the inherited turn, and our idea of setting the build to culture, and by working the hill I can get 1 CPT. Zora won't grow, but getting the culture there is more important IMO.

I check Civics, and I decide we need to switch to free markets to get the extra traderoutes (we are still in decentralization) I revolt to get there ASAP.

Turn 1:
I notice JC has plopped an archer/settler pair on the isle north of Salemenica. Looks like he's giving us another target to take out.

JCsettler.JPG

Turn 2: Buildup... buildup

Turn 3: Trigger finger is getting itchy, as our forces are amassed on JC's border.

Turn 4: So I dail up JC... actually I kind of come up behind him, and proceed to stab him in the back!!

Turn 5: Our great merchant arrives in Shanghi... and we have 1500 gold.
Same turn, a missionary shows the Chinese the wonders of Buddism.

Turn 6: We get 2 Great scientists on the same turn! One from Pysics, and anther born from GPP. After looking around, I decide an Academy in Tours is the best idea.

Turn 7: After a couple turns of bombardment of Arrietium, I get some bad RNG results... losing more units than I had hoped for.

However, the results in Ravienna are differenet.

Ravienna.JPG

Turn 8: I have been spying this spot for a few turns now, and have sent a settler north to the tip of Toka's lands. Once we got Physics, uranium shows up! (There is one other source out in the jungle south of Madrid) With Fish, Cows, and now Uranium, this is a good spot. Gives us a foothold on this continent... for furture "expansion" :devil:

Back on the warfront, a little more luck... and I get my revenge in Arrietium.

Arrie.JPG

Turn 9: Steamrolling!!! Antium falls!

Antium.JPG

Turn 10: And I'm spent! Not before I take out Cumae... :D

Cumae.JPG

So that's it. Once I started the war... I took out 4 of JC's Cities in the last 5 of my turns. :ar15: :sniper: :hammer: :dance:

A few notes as I pass onto oldbustedjorn:

For one, I did NOT use our GA. For one, I was saving our artist for a culture bomb (once we take Rome or another of his soutern cities) and I didn't want him used up.

I just dropped off a couple units on west isle to take out JC's city there. He only has one longbow, so it should be easy!

There is a worker on a boat heading north to the new city I founded. He can hook up the cows now, and the Uranium once we get an exapnsion. Once the cows are worked, set the build to culture to get our expansion!

Now that was a turnset... WOW. (If I say so myself!)

Ok, a couple more images to add (my first post was huge)

Here is our new city on Toka's grounds...

Newisle.JPG

Get one border expansion and we can work fishes and uranuim.

I think or culture will meet up soon, with our main contient as well! (That will make our wrokboats able to traverse easily.

We have almost 1/3 of the world under Buddism now... awesome.

Bud.JPG

Take it oldbustedjorn!

I would say we defintly raze the two western JC cities. Northern of the two might provide iron... but we have that and the city itself doesn't offer much (will prolly autoraze anyway).

Good to see JC failing quickly, but did I see that JC has muskets? Kind of concerning that gunpower research is out there. Hope it didn't sperad too much.

I was disappointed to see that our explorer didn't pop a tech. I was secretly being really greedy. At least we got some gold out of it! Our treasury looks good right now. Sooner we can finish off JC the better. Will remove all war weariness.

If at all possible, lets cap Rome next. It has the wonders I crave.

Good job on the war (as always).

Yes, I agree we need to raze the 2 cities on the west isles. Yes, JC just got gunpowder, and I have seen one musket. I think one was rushed in Antuim.

our troops are a bit wounded at this point, so we may need a few turns rest to mount a push for Rome. (I did add a couple medical promotions to the stacks so that should help a bit)

If anyone jumps on us for helping JC... lets see if we can get QSH (or another cheap neighbor) to jump back on them. No sense leaving the war only on this side of the world. And of course lets make sure our navy is ready for the upcoming challenge.

HOLY SHNIKEY!!

I just looked at the save. JC has a ... stack in his capital. Lots and lots of units, not to mention multiple ships. Even worse (imo) is only one of our cities is currently producing a military unit and its a crossbow. Its great that we made rapid progress at the start, but we're going to have a hard time with the next wave. If we had more of an eastern navy, I'd actually suggest doing an end run and taking out the city southwest of Rome (pike and longbow only there). Just to bleed JC. Maybe even leave the two western island cities to harm his economy with maint until we can be sure to take down the capital. That's a big freakin stack he has there. Be very careful of a backyard landing. If you see the capital stack go down and no stacks on land. Towards that end, getting a few ships around the southern tip of our continent would help a bit (just be sure to keep some homeland defense).

We probably should have switched into Police State when we went to Free Market. Units would train faster and we'd have much less war weariness (our capital is already unhappy).

Gegnghis and Saladin were friends with JC so we lost some points with them. Rest of the world is ok. QSH won't jump anyone except JC and its a bit expensive at that. There are some resource trades out there with Tok and Genghis. So make sure we take their gpt if we can.

GL OldBusted!

Way to make JC wish he started on another continent!!

Speaking of that, I have one goal...

1. To finish off JC

Ok, ok - I really have no clue if that possible, I haven't even looked at the save yet. But I think I can do it. A big stack in Rome? How close are we to steel? :satan:

This is my got it, I should be able to play tomorrow (friday) night.

The stack in Rome is big-ish... I think that our troops can bust through it. It looks a lot more intimidating than it is... there are a lot of ships there.

We have a LOT of units down in JC's lands, and right now they are split between the last 2 cities that I captured. I think merging them and striking at Rome should be feesable. JC's other two cities on the mainland are very lightly defended, I think 1-2 units apiece.

I think not going to police state on my first turn probably was a mistake, I forgot that I wouln't be able to switch civics again for awhile (I think it was 8 turns)... Maybe a switch should be done on the inherited turn, as war weariness is starting to really creep up.

I am just thinking off the top of my head, but I think we are 2 or 3 turns from getting steel. So Cannons are coming soon! There's enough gold in the coffers to upgrade a few of our cats.

Changing of civicx may be done after 4 turns, irrespective of game speed.

I think the other continents is bound to have some war happening soon, their border problem should spark one soon.

Do check the trading table admist the war though, when someone got astronomy, we have to start settling the northern island soon.

Why do I have feeling I'm probably gong to clear the whole after-war mess again :sad:

Raze the western cities, unless the city have access to resources out of the BFC of our cities.

QSH has Astrology. I saw a settler laden ship down by Zara in the save file.

3 turns from steel I believe.

You never know Grey, you might be the one that gets to raze those two western JC cities... Depends on how fearsome JC and the dice are to us.

I wouldn't mind Zara, its far to the south. But that does mean its abt time we start our expatriate to the northern island.

I still think its a bit controversay to settle at Tonku's eastern tip. Its too early for airlifts, so its use in transporting troops is limited.

bobrath said:

:hmm: with oldbustedjorn and eektor before me? I doubt so. :sad:

If that REALLY happens, I promise to leave you one western city to raze :lol:

Sorry I haven't played yet, my internet was down since yesterday afternoon. They tried to upgrade me to two-way cable and there wasn't enough signal. That will hopefully be fixed monday afternoon and then I'll be able to upload pics at 400k instead of 20k!!!

In their reconfig efforts, my DHCP lease got screwed up. But now I'm back will be playing this afternoon!!

IT:

Well I start by taking a long survey.

I notice a Qin settler party on a boat near our south horse island. He prolly won't settle there, but its only a matter of time before he settles that north Island - which I want for the spaniards... I'll see if I can fit that in somewhere.

I also notice that we are running -55 @ 80% which is scary, but we can handle it with 1392 in the bank... Madrid has -6 happy from WW, causing one citizen to go on strike, wearing a sandwhich board which says, "Give peace a chance."

When I see the stack in Rome and the state of our troops, I realize that I won't be finishing JC off on my turnset, I'll have to wait a few turns to heal, and then I'll check the situation from there. There is a caravel on the east coast with an explorer, that I can upgrade to a frigate, if JC decides to actual use one of his trillion boats in Rome. I also started a frigate in Paris for support.

Turn 1 (1690AD):

A roman elephant takes out a conquistador at Antium :(

Hurrian: Market -> Grenadier (we need a few more modern units)

I finish off the 'phant that kill the conq...

We pop an engineer at Madrid - I sleep him for now - we should use for a golden age when the war is done. We have three GP btw.

Madrid now has -8 from WW, I MM to keep from starving.

TUrn 2 (1695AD):

Barc: Frigate -> Bank
Ravenna comes online -> Granary

I take an Xbow and Cat in JC territory.

I spread Bud in Nanjing.

Turn 3 (1700AD):

JC brings a well devised stack of two pikes and a longbow and takes out two phants and a conq. :mad:

Steel is in -> start rifling.

Santiago: Forge -> Observatory

I am very tempted to go for peace at this time. WW is starting to get bad and we really don't have much of an advantage on JC. I will press on though, until he at least gives us nationalism for peace... They have 12 units in Rome still, and quite a few on

their land. Their pikes are destoying our UU, and our maces are too slow to catch up.

Turn 4 (1705AD):

We are the wealthiest civ...

wealthies2eo.jpg

Saladin begins a GA.

Our units are starting to form better stacks, as the macemen have caught up. This will allow us to penetrate JC's territory.

Turn 5 (1710AD):

Cordoba: Bank -> Settler for north isle (hope its not too late, I can see Qin's boat heading that direction.

qinsettler6mj.jpg

Turn 6 (1715AD):

Madrid: Bank -> Courthouse (its at -5 main)

Units are in position to begin attack at Neapolis.

Turn 7 (1720AD):

Our mace (which was behind the main stack, staves off a mace attack from JC.

We get Rifling -> Nationalism (2 turns)
Seville: Bank -> Rifle (for front line defense)
Valencia: Library -> Grocer

Qin starts GA.

I take out a caravel.

I also have two conq en route to western JC cities.

Turn 8 (1725AD):

Our stack at Rome gets hammered by 8 units - thats right, it got attacked 8 times and WE WON EVERY FIGHT - so much for the stack in Rome. I'll have to let them heal, but I actually had a few units en route, so we should be ok.

Ravenna: Granary -> Lighthouse
Antium comes online -> Theatre
Cumae comes online -> Bud Temple

Rome STILL has 5 healthy units in Rome and one Xbow just outside. Meanwhile, our stack looks like this:

crippledstack4ip.jpg

Turn 9 (1730AD):

Nationalism in, Constitution started (then democracy in opinion)

Cordoba: Settler -> Rifle
Rheims: Bank -> Grocer
Salmanc: Forge -> Courthouse

There is a settler/musket pair by Pamplona -> Make sure they make it to north island.

Turn 10 (1735AD):

Hurrian: Grenadier -> Bank
Toledo: Grenadier -> Temple

The Battle of Arpinum:
Suicide Cat make for easy cleanup

catarpinum7yh.jpg

I raze as was the plan
I take out a caravel

The Battle of Neapolis:

I suicide one and only one cat:

Easy cleanup, and Neapolis is OURS!!

neapolisours0eg.jpg

I obviously didn't get to finish off Rome, but I think I turned the tide enough to make it happen next turn.

There is a galleon where arpinum was, and it can take all the units that just razed north to the last JC west city. That stack by Rome has been healing, and has not been attacked since that massive counterassault earlier. Take some units from Neapolis, especially the cannon, as it will probably need to be suicided, and take Rome. Pisae will be easy, and then we need to rebuild.

Our tech is superior so far as I can tell, and there are wonders to be built. Lets get some of these to better our position if possible.

Nice job oldbustedjorn! You set me up well to finish JC in my turnset. Unless I get really unlucky I think I can finish JC in my turnset. (Sorry GreyFox.)

This is my got it post. I'll play tomorrow late afternoon.

My main goal is finishing off JC. The quicker the better since it looks like we have a lot of war weariness in our cities. I plan on keeping all the Roman cities except the one on the little island with iron.

I'm going to try to get a settler on one of the northern island or at least build one to send there.

I see we are researching Constitution now. I think I will continue this and head towards assembly line to get Infantry. Any other ideas for a research path?

Firstly, some back-patting is in order ...

Great job, Maquis and OldBustedJorn. :goodjob: :thumbsup: I see you guys are really enoying the game ... :D Not that I am not, mind you, I love this game, really, its progressing well!

I agree with you, eektor, you should be able to finish JC in your turnset :sigh: ... except for the fact that you're almost running out of bombarding units. I see only one cannon in the recently captured city, and one catapult in the rome siege stack. So there might be hope for me :p *:worship: to the RNG God*

Civics

I suggest switching to Police State now to take care of war-weariness. After the 3 units are being built (slowest being grenader in Orleans, 4 turns), switch back to representation and OR. As to vassalage, I don't know whether is it worth paying the high upkeep of vassalage to enjoy the free 24 units.

Taj Mahal

We have nationalism, can someone please start building the Taj Mahal to have the golden age? QSH has marble, and we don't have. He still yet have nationalism (but is capable of researching it now), but once he does, rest assure he will build the Taj Mahal immediately. So I suggesting swapping out Groccer in Rheims (our production powerhouse with 25hpt) now to get the Taj Mahal. It will take 28 turns, but there are two forest tiles (1 north of stone and 1 SW of Rheims) out of any cities' BFC available for chopping. Plus switching to OR should boost our production further. Plus, you could trigger a GA with current great people after the war to further boost producton. This will give us the extended GA!

Research

Research-wise, I think we have exhausted those techs with freebies (Economics, Music, Physics, Liberalism). I would suggest going Communism for State Property. Going for Assembly Line is also an excellent idea. ALso, we have ended the era of land-only warfare with the destruction of Romans, so Combustion is also high in priority to maintain our superiority in the age of naval warfare.

Actually the switch to Police State should have happened as close to the start of Old's turn. The half price units + reduced WW would be great. Now with the war (imo) looking to last no more then 4/5 turns... switching to Police State just means we'll have to wait to switch any other civ.

No sense in paying for vassalage when the other civics will make us more money for a cheaper cost.

Don't forget one of our GPs is an engineer.... why "waste" him on a GA when he can be used here first. Then if you're not close enough use the other two GPs to trigger a GA. Doesn't make sense (to me) to use a GA for the sole purpose of getting another GA. Course I could be missing something.

Combustion is a necessity. Beyond that do we want to get the Statue of Liberty or go heavy military?

Certainly, PS is more effective in the begining of the war, but since we are still in representation at the end of the previous turnset, no point in beating a dead horse, eh? :lol:

Does WW immediately disappears once the war is over? I though it wears off gradually, so limiting the WW now may helps a little. In any case, the grenadier is going to take 4 turns to complete (most likely the war would take as long), so we will be staying in vassalage and Theocracy for that long. Might as well make the switch to Police State now, and switch it off again 4 turns later together with the swap out of theocracy.

Of-course, you have to weigh the effectiveness of PS against losing the benefits of representation right now, with the war abt to be over.

Right about using the GE for Taj Mahal. Didn't noticed that one of the GP is a GE.... :crazyeye: I am not suggesting using a golden age to build the taj mahal alone. Since someone suggested to trigger the GA after the war (to help building our infrastructure), might as well build the Taj Mahal in the same period, and save the GE for something else. Or if we want only one golden age, then simply using the GE for Taj Mahal is an excellent idea! That is like having a GA with only a GE rather than using two (or more) GPs. :thumbsup:

If we are in agreement with a conquest/domination victory, then going heavy military would be my vote.
