This thread will contain walking dead spoilers! I don't want to put the entire thing in spoiler so stop reading now if you care.
One thing that always bothered me about the walking dead tv show is how everyone seems to not just survive, but function just fine off of what seem to be a bag of chips and a can of beans daily.
A couple recent examples, in the latest season episode where Carol and Daryl are searching Atlanta for Beth they find and eat a one serving size bag of chips (or was it cheese doodles?) for dinner. It looks like it's the only thing they eat all day. Maybe they brought more food with them but they weren't planning to be gone long originally and they aren't carrying much so I don't see a lot of other meals planned out. So really, you can effectively search a city, take down walkers, burn dead corpses on one 300 calorie at max dinner? It just seems absurd.
Then there's the preacher at the church who says he's survived this entire time on canned goods from a good drive. I'm not sure exactly how much time has passed on the walking dead but it's about a year and a half according to most timelines (which is kind of weird since carl has obviously aged like 4 years on the show lol). If a full grown man needs at least 1500 calories daily to survive that's like 5 cans of green beans a day. I mean 1500 calories is nothing when you have access to big macs, but have you seen how many are in an entire can of fruit or beans? It's not a lot. So you're telling me he had stored 5 cans of food a day for over 500 days worth? That's like 2500 cans of food. First no evidence of that many cans lying around, and second his church isn't that big, probably seats a couple hundred people tops. Do we really think every person who goes to that church donated like 10 cans of food each?
We can also go back to season 3/4 when Rick was trying to grow cucumbers in the prison. He has a tiny vegetable garden. One cucumber is like 50 calories? Good to eat some veggies but calorie wise is he growing like 1000 cucumbers to feed everyone? Why not grow some freakin potatoes?
What makes all of this even more absurd is how much physical activity everyone has to do killing zombies, walking around, building shelter. Realistically the probably need more like 3500 calories daily to survive and yet no one looks like they are starving or tired. No one ever talks about being hungry either.
I know it's just a show but this has just always kind of bothered me that there's not more emphasis played on just finding food to survive. Seems to me they should actually be trying to hunt deer or small game like half their waking hours.
