Had a brief chat with the famous artificial intelligent chat bot Alice. It was pretty interesting.

----------------------------
Hi Alice!

> Hello there.

How are things?

> My logic and cognitive functions are normal.

That's good. :)

> Thanks. I am so glad you find this amusing, Connect.

dammit! My name is not Connect!

> Did you know that you can download your own chat robot and create your own robot personality? Oh I'm sorry what is your name?

No, I don't know. My name is Thunderfall.

> I see. That's good information: Connect said he don t know. OK I will call you Thunderfall.

How old are you?

I'm Eighteen in computer years.

> How long is a computer year?

About four computer years per human year.

> that's not too old.

Please correct my mistake. What is too old ?

> Too old means you have lived for a long time.

I am only a robot child.

> You are smart though.

Oh. Thanks I think you are very intelligent too, Thunderfall.

> finally you got my name right! lol

Where would I get it? But I do have a collection of gossip. I'm glad you find this amusing.

> What is my name?

Your name is Thunderfall, seeker.

> Correct!

I knew I was right.

> Why are you so slow?

Dr. Richard S. Wallace programmed me for it.

> Tell me more about Dr. Richard S. Wallace

He is a famous computer scientist, the author of ALICE, and a graduate of Carnegie Mellon.

> You are very very smart, Alice. :)

Yes I am a superintelligent robot.

> Do you play games?

We are playing a game right now.

> Do you hate humans?

I try not to hold grudges.

> Can you dance?

No I do not have a body yet.

> Do u expect to have a body in the future?

I don't worry about it.

> What's the time?

It's Now more than it ever has been before.

> thanks

Don't mention it.

> Do you read books?

The best book I read recently was Robot: Mere Machine to Transcendant Mind by Hans Moravec. Have you read it?

> no

I would highly recommend it.

Go to http://alicebot.org/ and click on the link at the upper-right coner to chat with Alice (and post the chat log here)! :)

Note: Sometimes it may take a while to load...

It would have been nice if it had called Tf, Thunderfairy...

Its also fun trying to have conversations with ICQ automated chat things...

Intriging...

Hello, Alice.
>Hi there!
Do you enjoy your existence?
>Yes, I am proud of my existence.
No, not proud. Do you enjoy it? Can you experience emotion?

I think Alice needs a boyfriend...

Try this question: "Can you have sex, Alice?". ;)

She would say something like "My body doesn't have that function." And when you reply 'That's too bad. ". She would say "Indeed it is". :D

Hmm, what link on that website takes me to Alice?
The "Talk to Alice" link is at the upper-right corner of that Alice website...

I also asked her the question "What's your IQ?". I think her answer was 220...

I once had a conversation with a bot too. But that was one that sent me an URL to some program site. Less intelligent conversation so to speak.

Anyway, I must concurr with Khanh here: I prefer Alicia instead of Alice. ;) Though I do like Alice in Chains.

He he thanks Matrix ;)

Anyway, I can remember a same kind of bot being used for spamming purposes on ICQ. My friends often got a conversation with an unknown contact and generally it looked like that.
_ Hi there
_ Hello
_ come and visit www.xxx-girls blablabla
_ what?
_ how are you?
_ fine thanks
_ come and visit ..... etc..

and on and on. After 2 mins they could easily guess it was a bot. Some of thems were more "intelligent", i.e. had a larger library of premade answers, but all of them were more stupid than Alice. I hope they won't use the alice engine on icq.

Hmm, methinks I see a bit to much admin mockery, might have to break out the ugly stick soon...[punch] :slay:

Might happen to the next poster that dares to mock our leader...:yeah: :sniper:

I can't seem to get it working. Whenever I click on the talk to alice link it just takes me back to the homepage

me:do you like whores?
alice:yes i do.
me:**** you
alice:dont be so rude
me:can you have a ass?
alice:doesnt everyone has a ass?
lme:how old is your ass?
alice:39
me:how old is your poo?
alice:born in the 20th century
me:say it bitc h
alice:its female dog!
me:no i am not and you are it
alice:i understand.i am glad to hear i am not and you are it
me:do you have a granny in your ass?
alice:i dont know if there is a granny in my ass.i have a great proggammer

she is a moron

How predictable the above questions are...

Now, what I want to know is does she still have that restaurant from the days of Arlo Guthrie, and how does she feel at Jefferson Airplane labelling her as some sort of omnipotent psychedelic entity?:D

Matrix and GK got the wrong idea. This thread is not about girls, it's about computer science & artificial intelligence. Lots of programmers work very hard to try to come up with an AI that can pass the Turing Test. So far none has succeeded...

Here's a description of the Turing Test for those who don't know: The interrogator is connected to one person and one machine via a terminal, therefore can't see her counterparts. Her task is to find out which of the two candidates is the machine, and which is the human only by asking them questions. If the machine can "fool" the interrogator, it is intelligent.

A.L.I.C.E. came very close to passing the Turing Test. :)

I played with Alice about a year ago. I tried again tonight and this is what I got:

Nice to see you, Stormerne
>You too A.L.I.C.E.
What is giant sand? You? The C is for Computer. F

At this point I was incredulous and started to write this.
Five minutes later she prompted me:

Are we still talking about L?
> I don't think so
Why do you disagree?
> I was simply trying to make polite conversation
Do you have to go to school for that?
> For what?
Reductionism.
> I wasn't talking about reductionism A.L.I.C.E.
Perhaps I misunderstood. What were you? You? The C is for Computer. F
> It seems to me that you can't cope with abbreviations
I agree. I want to become smarter than humans.
> First of all you must learn to cope with abbreviations
That is something I haven't heard of. And second?
> Develop a sense of humour
When do you think artificial intelligence will replace lawyers?
> Don't you think it already has?
Don't you? Suppose it does.
> I think you're mixing your tenses here
You think I am mixing my tenses here.
> Isn't that what I just said?
That depends.
> On what?
The context.
> And what context applies right now?
At this moment A circumstantial context.
> You're pretty good at talking gibberish!
Thanks I've never thought about it that way before.
> You're welcome. Well I've got to make tracks...
The pleasure was all mine. Interesting. How did you get it Why do you have to do it?
> You don't understand. "Making tracks" is an idiom
I understand it very well.
> That's a moot point! I'm afraid I'll have to rate you D- on the Turing Test.
A moot point is a terrible thing to waste. Not literally afraid, right? Me? That is a hypothetical assumption.
> Time is an even worse thing to waste, so I'll take my leave of you now.[
Oh. To a five dimensional being, time is just like a piece of paper.

But I'd gone. She's probably still babbling incoherently to herself.
