Warhammer 40,000 NES IC Thread

Chapter Master Ickaris watched as the eighth company boarded the transport bound for the Diaphanenus system, several sub-sectors away. It was a risk sending off a company while the Ruinous powers held sway close at hand, but he was confident it was the right thing to do.

Word had spread through diplomatic channels of heretics having taken over the entire Diaphanenus system, including a fortress world. This event had only sparked minor interest for Ickaris until a message had been sent to various Space Marine Chapters throughout the sector asking for the assistance of any Adeptus Astartes to purge the rebellion. Lady General Jenit Sulla of the Valhallan regiments was taking personal command of the expedition and had personally sent off the request to the handful of chapters present.

This was a good opportunity. Help to smash those who defy the Emperor and build up good will with others in the Imperium. Unfortunately it would mean the eighth would not return to the Chapter until near the end of 010 M42. But that was the price to pay to help protect the Imperium and Ickaris was willing to pay that and much more.

Deep below the scorching surface of the Hive World of Atla, great things are afoot. We prepare, as do all.

XENOS!

Or so would any other member of the Imperium cry.

Any outsider would cringe.

They would cower, before the 'howls and screams' of us.

They
would block their minds off, and not hear the sonorous hymns, the deepest music.

At the beauty
of the Genestealer.

Oh, the perfection.

Wisdom of Primarchs. Might of the Purestrains.

We are loyal. We are all family. We are one.

Some would cringe. The Genestealers are perfection. They are a weapon. We are a weapon. There is a dance of death. A romance of blood. Passion of infection.

You scream, as blood trickles down the curving scythes of our hands. You do
not see the beauty of such a thing. We can show you. To die upon a claw is an honour, if you put any faith- any bearing in such a term.

But
to be consumed into us. Our Family. Our Joy. ThE GeNeSteALERs. This is the fate awaiting us all, in time.

Patience is all...

the Technician sighed. "Sir, is that really necessary? It's only a 3% error. well withing the margin of error you gave us in the design specification."

{Statement: If this were anything but the reactors, it would. but the reactors are the most likely fail point at maximum output. it would also be the most catastrophic. estimated Yield: 2.7 Megaton, with a 57.4% chance of causing another reactor to explode. that explosion would have a 78.65% chance of causing a third explosion. the third Explosion has a 99.995% chance of causing all the remaing reactors to explode. total yield in that case would be around 27.2 megatons.}

"... I see sir. I'll start the process right away and inform the crafter to be more careful."

The Battle Barge Sword of Guilliman recieved the message just before moving to its next assignment. After some smirks and chuckles the bridge crew relayed the message to the fortress monastary where the Chapter Master and his command staff would recieve it. Chapter Master Ickaris decided to personally draft an appropriate response.

Your words are laughable, your threats meaningless. We are the Emperor's Angels of Death. We shall purge you from the galaxy and leave only the burning wastes of your worlds as a monument to the Greatness of the Emperor of all Mankind.

Equipment and modus operandi of the PDF and Imperial Guard regiments from the TTC: For reasons not entirely understood by outside observers, the TTC's armed forces seem to have divorced themselves from the usual love affair with Las weapons that are the norm with the majority of the imperial guard regiments currently serving the Empire. Instead, with the exception of the meltagun, plasma gun and Lascannon, they have replaced all the directed energy weapons normally found in the imperial guard arsenal with ballistic weapons. Guardsmen are armed with a variety of autoguns, whose design have been refined to maximize accuracy, stopping power and penetration, even going as far as to equip their elite units with burst limited models equipped with scopes. Their chimera carriers and sentinels dispense with the standard issue multilaser in favor of autocannons or heavy bolters. They even go as far as to equip their units with recoil suppressed Light Machine guns as a replacement for the usual specialized mobile firepower.

Another non standard addition to their armory would be the so called "Anti Material Rifle" which, by all intents and purposes appears to be a stripped down autocannon with a longer barrel and a much slower rate of fire. Teams equipped with this weapon are trained to take up firing positions where they would wait for hours or days until an appropriate target exposed itself. Preferred targets included high profile officers or vehicles who foolishly exposed their side or rear armor to the high velocity armor piercing round. Although lacking the sheer capability for penetration seen from Lascannon shots, a well placed round could spark off the magazine of a Leman Russ. When used against personnel, anything short of power armor will fail completely, and although the round is not high explosive, the high velocity of the munition is enough to rupture just about every internal organ it passes within a foot of.

In addition to these departures from imperial doctrine, the TTC favors the use of higher quality body armor for the majority of its units. If its not able to stand up to the majority of the weapons issued by the enemies of the empire to their rank and file, then its not worth wearing. Furthermore, their units are trained to a higher standard, increasing their accuracy and their tactical competency. Training includes effective use of cover, entrenching strategies for a variety of environments and how to overcome similar defensive measures often employed by the enemy.

Instead of relying on weight of numbers, their tactics demand a higher level of tactical awareness. As a result their training takes two or three times as long as is the norm, and in addition to the higher standard of equipment this results in smaller sized formations which brings its own form of disadvantages to play. However TTC leadership is convinced it will be worth it.

Update 3: M42.007-M42.009

News from Beyond the Frontier:

A plague of unbelief has struck the civilized worlds beyond the borders of the Jugurtha sub-sector. All throughout the Nabataea sector, the armies of the Imperium march to war….

A Broader Context…

The warfare between the followers of the dark gods and that of the Emperor that has engulfed the Jurgurtha sub-sector is just part of a larger uprising throughout the sector. The Fortress world of Diaphanenus IV has fallen to treachery. The system, a lynchpin of defence for the Diodachi sub-sector, has completely fallen to the forces of the ruinous powers in a lightning campaign.

Not only has this created a powerful, hostile force within the borders of the Imperium in position to strike at vulnerable Imperial possessions, but it also leaving a gaping rent in Imperial defences, leaving the entire sub-sector open to attacks from any number of marauding threats.

The Diodachi sub-sector lies to the galactic ‘north’ of the Jugurtha sub-sector.

Similar revolts have taken place throughout several sub-sectors, most notably huge disorganized assaults in the Trajanus sub-sector to the galactic south-west. Imperial hold on the Trajanus sub-sector has always been tenuous, and these uprising, though not nearly as well-equipped or organized as those in the Diodachi sub-sector, pose a significant threat to Imperial interests.

To admit defeat is to blaspheme against the Emperor

The loyal man of the Imperium stand bloodied, but unbowed in this holy struggle. Though sub-sector command has deteriorated in Diodachi, several important figures have served as rallying points for Imperial forces.

Commanding the relief expedition is Lady General Jenit Sulla. A native of the harsh Valhallan climate, she is no stranger to hardship. Her determined leadership have checked the advance heretic forces and she has pledged to personally lead her forces straight to the governor’s palace on Diaphanenus IV.

While the Diodachi and Trajanus sub-sector fall into chaos, the forces of order in the galactic west have closed ranks and re-dedicated themselves to the Emperor. Habaeian sub-sector has become the focal point for loyal servants of the Imperium. One of the few sub-sectors to know peace in recent centuries, the governors of Habaeian are known for their tithing irregularities and disrespect of Administratum personnel. However, with a direct threat nearby, a new wave of patriotism and religious fervour is pushing the governors into action. The most powerful man in the sub-sector, High Marshall Klafki, the dictatorial leader who commands the loyalty of over twenty planets, has completely changed his attitude to the Imperium. Never having been conquered by Imperial forces, barely paying lip service to the Emperor, and fighting brush wars with his more loyal neighbours, Klafki has gone from the biggest threat to the Imperium in Habaeian to one of its staunchest supporters. In exchange for official recognition, subsidies, and Imperial Guard regiment, he has turned his military might towards the Diodachi and Trajanus sub-sectors.

While Generals Sulla and Macrinus provides examples for the military, Imperial citizenry have turned to a firebrand preacher named Tarellius Garent. Garent, who commanded an archbishopric on the planet of Yarin in the Habeian sub-sector, has declared a peasant’s crusade against the forces of chaos. Hundreds of thousands of fanatics have declared their intent to join the crusade, with millions more turning to the belief in Garent’s extreme version of the Imperial creed.

Despite the fighting now breaking out in the Jugurtha sub-sector, the Adeptus Astartes have managed to spare forces to join the crusade to break the heretics in Diaphanenus. One company of the Heirs of Guilliman have dedicated themselves to the cause.

In Rome, the Legion have dedicated their entire force to the liberation Diodachi. They have sworn not to return to their homeworld until the entire Diodachi and Trajanus sub-sectors have been cleansed.

With the Legion gone, sector command has taken the opportunity to raise much needed funds for the war effort by selling the governorships of the Legion’s former worlds. A powerful buyer, Benjamin Kasen of the Imperial Lens Network, has spent his considerable resources on securing all of the available governorships. What kind of ruler Kasen will be is unknown, but the people of the Rome and surrounding systems hold out hopes they will be better than the callous, aloof marines.

Matters Military:

It appears the relative peace of the previous six years was simply the calm before the storm. Several wars have broken out throughout the sub-sector. Though there is little co-ordination between the factions involved, they can be classified into two general trends.

The Green Tide

Passau
The xenophobic, isolationist Passauni Empire have had their believes vindicated as they suffer the depredations of the Orks. The Ork Rok that appeared in late M42.006 blasted its was through the Passauni fleet and collided with Passau. The Rok, still functional after a spectacular landing, landed directly on the Passauni capital, killing the Emperor and sending his forces into disarray.

The Passauni never recovered from the blow. Though they fought hard from M42.007112-M42.009541, all organized resistance ended after this date with the surrender of the elite Black Guard.

Some Passauni have continued to fight on, but these determined partisans are few in number. Ork reprisal raids have seen massive numbers of civilian deaths and the population have settled into their new roles as slave labourers.

The new ork warlord has declared himself ‘Da Despot of Dakka’ and declared the founding of a new Orkish despotate with him as leader.

Mandala II
The increasing paranoia of the Bahmali Empire has turned out to be vindicated as well. At the cost of economic growth, huge fortifications have been put up throughout the Empire.

The Orks of Mogz Meanest and Greenest were the first to test these defences. With the main Bahmali fleet in orbit around Bahmal, the Orks made unopposed landings onto Mandala III in the Mandala system. Hundreds of thousands of feral orks poured out of the transport vessels only to die on the walls of Bahmali strongholds.

The Bahmali were well-prepared for an invasion. At the first sign of trouble, all civilians were to report to strongholds in the administrative centres of their regions, or, failing that, retreat to local hidden bunkers. These strongholds became centres of resistance from which the Bahmali could lash out against the invaders, or at the very least have some hope of surviving. The Orks were given two choices, either besiege them all, leaving themselves spread thin, or attempt to take them a few at a time. The Orks choose the later, leaving the Bahmali defenders of the other strongholds free to strike at them with impunity.

Reinforcements arrived at the end of M42.008. By the time they arrived, the fate of the Orks was sealed. It wasn’t long before the Orks were routed and purged from this world.

But still, the question was, why send in such large numbers of feral Orks unsupported? The question would be answered in the Agrippa system…

Agrippa III
The real Orkish attack came three months after the first Orks landed on Mandala II. Agrippa III had seen the building of fortifications similar to Mandala II. With most of the population concentrated in either the large refining towns or the mining camps, it was easier to retreat to the strongholds. However, this meant that the mining camps have for the most part been completely abandoned to the greenskinned horde.

This time the Orks did have sufficient weaponry to besiege every stronghold on the planet. The sieges were fierce. The Bahmali were pushed to the breaking point, but somehow they managed to throw back the invader time and again.

Despite their determined resistance however, the Bahmali were slowly worn away. Eventually orkish numbers and firepower told, and one by one, the strongholds began to fall. It is estimated that three-quarters of the strongholds remain in human hands, though mounting casualties and dwindling food stocks mean that none of them are expected to survive the next three years.

Dark Millenium

Parry and Riposte: Iranea/Turaneia
The Imperial forces in the galactic ‘east’ have shown a high degree of co-operation over the last six years. The culminating display of this co-operation has been the joint strike on the Army of the Grand Design. In an attempt to gain naval superiority, Imperial fleets joined forces and cut straight to the heart of the Army’s territory.

The Sword of Guilliman led the fleet into the Iranea system first, where intelligence said the Army’s fleet lay in wait. The Imperials were surprised when they encountered no space-borne resistance. With no enemy to face, the fleet instead wrecked havoc on shipping in system and the shipyards around Simonia. The fleet spent a few days jamming local frequencies with Imperial propaganda while bombarding the shipyards before jumping to Turaneia.

In Turaneia, the same scene was repeated. The Imperial fleet expected to fine the Army’s fleet. Instead, they found anther empty system. The fleet spent several days here repeating what they had done in Iranea and determining what their next of action should be.

On the last day of their blockade, a fleet dedicated to the dark gods did arrive. But it was not what was expected…

The Oblivion Bliss Cruiser had come with attendant transports with a mission: destroy the Sword of Guilliman, no matter how. The plan was for the huge numbers of troops on the transports to board the Sword of Guilliman. The plan was a debacle. Even if the battle barge had been alone, it would have outgunned the Chaos fleet. But with four escorts in support, they were easily able to pick apart the transports before they could get within range. The Chaos cruiser was lucky to escape at all.

Fearing a chaos invasion of their territory, the Imperial admirals decided to head to what they viewed as their most vulnerable possessions. TTC forces returned to their colony of Tsuchi, while the Marines headed back to their capital worlds.

The Army of the Grand Design’s shipyards in Simonia are reduced to level 1 and the shipyards in Saulia are destroyed. Transport between systems has been severely disrupted, which has caused a hiccup in the Army’s economy. This display of power, along with Imperial propaganda, has given hope to those who secretly worship the Emperor.

Dance with the Devil by the Pale Moonlight: The Satellites of Triax IV
The Imperium’s fears proved true. The Army of the Grand Design was on the March, and it was on the march straight to the Trade Consortium’s capital. The Army of the Grand Design’s fleet entered the Triax system shortly after the Imperial fleet arrived in Iranea and made a move for the two more poorly defended moons.

The Army unleashed wave after wave of expendable fodder against the Imperial defenders. The Ominous Legion attacked with reckless abandon, hoping to overwhelm the greatly outnumbered defenders. The Ominous Legion attacked from multiple directions and faced defenders unprepared to face them. Eventually, numbers told, and in barely six months, both moons had been conquered.

Surprisingly, the rule of the Army of the Grand Design has been light. Orgies of looting and violence have been few; though the population remains cowed in fear their oppressors might change their minds.

After their conquests, the fleet moved on to their next target: Triax Alpha. Since barely more than half of the Ominous Legion could fit into the transports on their first run, the Legion had to await the arrival of the rest of their army, including their heavy forces. With the chaos inflicted on the Army behind their lines, the arrival of the rest of the legion was delayed until late M42.009, meaning that a full-scale invasion could not occur yet.

In the meantime, the fleet bombarded ground targets with full vigour, destroying the shipyards along with several air and armour bases. The people of Alpha are fearful indeed, and only a miracle might save them from the coming storm…

The Dividing Line: TYX-2d
The Eldar of Uarthe have made another intervention into the affairs of lesser beings. This time, they have interfered in the wars of the Mon’Keigh. The feudal warlords of TYX-2d, which has many local names in many dialects, have for a long time fought each other. However, with the arrival of the Eldar, who pledged to support any who would support them, this warfare has intensified.

The Eldar have attempted to sort out who is genuine in their support for Uarthe. In their plans to do this, it has taken nearly two terran years to sort out the genuine from the power-hungry. During this time, the countryside was ravaged, and many humans were killed, as the war enters its sixth year.

Once the Eldar has determined who was worthy of their support, they began to lend support in the means of weaponry and direct military aid. The Eldar, wary of the losses they suffered on Varnee and Junee, only deployed in small, carefully co-ordinated strikes, or in orbital or air borne attacks, which their enemies could not hope to retaliate against. The humans of TYX-2d are less independently minded than the Hrud of Varnee, and the Eldar are taking a tighter and tighter grip on their vassal rulers, as they trade concessions for aid. So far, Eldar casualties have been in the hundreds, barely worthy of note, as they have successfully used proxies to destroy their enemies. It has taken longer than a direct invasion would have, though these vassal proxies may prove useful after the war is over.

Results:
Uarthe has taken control of a large portion of TYX-2d worth 120/1/1/1. Additional campaigning is necessary to take the whole planet, though it should fall quickly.

Affairs Internal:

Times remain tough under the aegis of the Heirs of Guilliman. The economy continues to struggle through however. There are signs that the recession is coming to an end however. The people’s support of their overlords cannot be higher, as word of their victory against the chaos fleet has reinforced their reason for being. The people have dedicated themselves to do whatever they can to help the war effort.

The economy of the Army of the Grand Design has been shaken by the disruption in inter-planetary trade. While it has not been enough to damage the economy directly, it has prevented the Army from pulling out of its recession. While the Imperial raids shook the confidence of many within the Army, the victories against TTC forces has reversed this opinion and there is overwhelming support for the continued war against the followers of the false emperor.

The Veryn economy continues to grow at a raid pace. The continued economic expansion has continued. Infrastructure investment has continued, which, combined with the low tax rate ensures that business flourishes. Verynindustries and businesses have begun to take over markets previously controlled by the other Imperial powers, leading to increased economic power and influence concentrated in Vernith. This trend may well continue, is Vernith’s prosperity remains at contrast with the extended recessions of the other three Imperial factions in the sub-sector.

The economy of the Bahmali Empire has been sorely damaged in the struggle against the Orkish waaagh. However, which taxes remain high, the heavy investment in the military and industrial areas has led to a blossoming of wartime industries which may lead to economic expansion, assuming the supply of raw materials can be sustained.

The slaves working under Mogz Meanest and Greenest continue to toil under the lash of their greenskinned tormentors. The forges are constantly alive with the sound of hammer on metal. It appears that the first forays into the Bahmali Empire were just the beginning of something more…

The dynastic wars in the Iydith League have resulted in further suffering for the economy, squandering the economic boom that was occurring. An end to the succession battles seem to be over for now, what lasting effect it will have is unknown.

Uarthe craftworld’s influence continues to increase. The continued successes of the craftworld have ensured support for now, though that may change if they suffer reverses. Slowly, more Eldar are beginning to see the benefits of turning outward. The Hrud of Varnee remain loyal servants to the Eldar, though they resist all political attempts at more direct Eldar control. They have expanded and re-organized their armed forces, so that they might return the favour the Eldar paid them should anything threaten them.

The Trade Consortium’s efforts to pull out of their recession have been undermined by the loss of two of the three Triax moons. This has severely affected confidence in the economy and the government. The TTC’s bid to cut down on corruption through a severe crackdown by the ‘Accountants’ has been wildly successful, though it has seriously disrupted the bureaucracy in this financial period, it will greatly improve efficiency and reduce loss in the coming years. Wartime industries are flourishing, as they prepare for a long war. They will continue to flourish so long as they have the resources to fuel them, though with the losses of the mining worlds, who can say how long that will be?

Oblivion Bliss has recovered from the loss in its colonies only to face another blow to confidence after the naval disaster in the Turanea system. Though confidence has been shaken, the arrival of a warband of Emperor’s Children Space Marines who have pledged to fight beside Oblivion Bliss has bolstered confidence. Significant spending into appeasing the population has ensured that the people have been placated, despite losses. Their territories have pulled themselves of recession, in large part thanks to the massive economic energy put into the terraforming of Falr. This has mainly taken the form of introducing (or mutating) new strains of crops, developing marginal land into fertile crop-growing lands, and sacrificing the weak to ensure bumper crops. The feudal planet has increased its food production from 1 to 2 as a result of this agricultural revolution. Some have speculated that the point of diminishing returns may have been reached in Falr’s agricultural output.

The Coalition of Worlds has continued on in it’s moderate economic policies. The investment into the feudal worlds has already been noted above, and there is little else to report in the healthy Coalition economy. Where most of their treasury is going, no one is quite sure.

The areas previously under the domination of the Legion have stabilized slightly as they await their new overlords. There has been no growth this term, but neither has the economy shrunk, as it did in the last term.

Sept Kadra, nestled into a peaceful region of space, continues to develop quietly on its own, unburdened by instability or danger. The human populations are beginning to learn how to live with their new neighbours, though there are some incidents, especially concerning the Kroot. The economy continues to grow and the people are for the most part content.

The Atlan Ascendancy has reached a peak in its economic development, though the over development may lead to a recession in the near future. Confidence in the government and economy run high through high and low among the population. The flow of refugees from their space has stopped. Possibly because there is no one left to flee. Or perhaps what dissidents remain have decided to stand their ground. None can say, and no one outside the Ascendancy has any idea.

Similarly, the Hymbaline Reach has reached dizzying new heights as economic growth continues unabated. Low taxes, the expansion of the shipbuilding industry, and increased efficiency in domestic goods production has ensured that this prosperity will continue. The government has reinvested much of its tax revenue in the welfare of their people, focusing specifically on medical advancements and health care. Thanks to these efforts, the people of the Reach are arguably the happiest, and certainly the healthiest, in the entire sub-sector.

On the Frontiers:

Oblivion Bliss has devoted its resources to other projects this year. Colonial development in this term has been slow, though steady. The minerals in the surviving colony have not yet been exploited.

The contribution of Uarthe Craftworld to its colonial program on the other hand, has ballooned with the colonization of a new world. The main colonial project remains Aetis. The Eldar of Aetis are still receiving generous funding, but they are handicapped by a lack of Eldar willing to leave the craftworld. The low birth rate of the Eldar and their craftworld culture has contributed to this problem. The Infrastructure continues to improve and more land falls under cultivation, though the ability to use that land is in question.

With the surviving Orks of Junee broken, battered, and numbering less than a million fearful survivors, the world lays open for colonization. Eldar have begun to settle the world, though in smaller numbers than on Aetis. The lower amount of natural resources on Junee have also slowed development on the planet. The Eldar live mainly in one central town on a southern continent. Some Varneean Hrud have expressed interest in settling on Junee.

Aetis now produces 10 economy. Junee is not developed enough to produce anything yet.

Though funding has been cut to the Vernith colony of Repaix, though the flow of material wealth in the terms of resources and food has continued. With their subsistence needs taken care of, more Repaixians can dedicate themselves to developing the planet. The resources have gone a long way towards developing the planet. There are now small settlements throughout the most fertile areas of the planet. The booming growth on the planet has greatly increased the number of settlers coming to the planet.

On Home, the government continues to grow increasingly autocratic. Even tighter crackdowns have been imposed and eventually, the stream of refugees has dried up. The Homites have continued to increase their military and fortify their positions. The native settlements are now universally well-defended bastions, though the depletion of manpower over the years to defection has made some of these fortresses near-ghost towns.

Repaix now produces 15 economy and is on track to begin producing food in the near future. Vernith’s holdings on Home increase to 50 economy as more refugees settle and rebuild on the Veryn side of the planet.

While not technically colonization, the Coalition of Worlds has invested in the development of the feudal world of Partha II. The development of industries has begun and people are beginning to flock to the growing towns, though in areas where this is more extreme, the lack of people working the land has meant that famines are not uncommon. If funding keeps up however, an agricultural revolution may be in the works.

The Trade Consortium has begun it’s first colonial project. The settlement of XVB-11c has seen the greatest commitment of resources the sub-sector has yet seen. Vast amounts of money and raw material have poured into the colony, as well as military support, have ensured a flourishing colony. Several major centers have sprung up in the temperate zones from which the colonization of the hinterlands is now occurring.

Consortium officials believe that the planet may begin economic contributions as soon as the next financial cycle.

The Atlan Ascendancy’s Karak colony continues to grow slowly but steadily. Attempts to infect the Jokaero have yielded mixed results. The cult attempted to capture and implant the Jokaero, though their advanced weaponry usually defeated the small bands sent to capture them. The Jokaero bands on planet have taken to active raiding of purestrain genestealers in retaliation, something that is rare for Jokaero. However, with the arrival of regular hybrid troops, some Jokaero were indeed captured, infected, and sent back into the wild. Throughout M42.009, no trace of the Jokaero has been seen, leading Atlan analysts to conclude that they have either retreated to some remote section of the planet, or were never native to the planet and have moved on, as most Jokaero tend to be nomadic. Whatever the case, the answer will have to wait.

No income can be collected from Karak yet.

Sept Kadra has begun its first colonial expansion. The target is planet KLS-11d, a maiden world with no indigenous population. Human, Tau, and Kroot have all been transplanted onto the world. The Tau population forms a much larger percentage of the population than elsewhere in the sept, in the hopes that shared experience will weld together the two races within the sept. Significant success has been made so far, though there is still a long way to go for the tiny colony.

No income can be collected from KLS-11d yet.

The Inquisition, at the request of sector command, has launched an investigation into the Atlan Ascendancy. The investigation was launched thanks due to a request into the tithing history of the Ascendancy, due to their claims of membership in the Imperium. Having discovered no record of tithing by the Atlan Ascendancy, Inquisitor Hellmann of the Ordo Hereticus was dispatched to secretly investigate what was really going on inside.

The preface to Inquisitor Hellmann’s report has been included:

Lord Inquistor Molotov,

I have just left orbit around Atla, the capital of the heretical realm calling itself the Atlan Ascendancy.

Avoiding the local authorities, which turned out to be no easy feat, we were able to land in the ash wastes of the equatorial zone. From there, we infiltrated a local hive and witnessed the taint of these ‘people’.

They are indeed all members of a most sinister xeno-cult. Autopsies of captured specimens indicate that they are member of the genestealer type. The rot is well advanced, with purestrain genestealers present and an acceptance of their existence by the general populace.

Our reconnaissance indicates that the authorities on Atlan are well aware that ones such as us might be searching for their secrets, the security was extremely tight and only penetrated with great difficulty.

Inquistor Hellmann, en route from Atla

The true nature of the Atlan Ascendancy is now common knowledge to all factions

Explorers have made an unexpected discovery in system TYX-4. The planet, formerly one of two homeworlds of the Cyclops space marines, was thought to have been completely depopulated or corrupted with the formation of the Tyrex Clouds.

While the chapter was indeed close to annihilated during the collapse, they managed to retain control of one of their worlds. The remains of their shipyards and one of their strike cruisers still orbit the world as testament to their past. Remains of other advanced ruins have been found by space-borne surveys on planet at well.

An Adeptus Mechanicus survey team in the system picked up an ancient distress signal from the surviving marines on planet and broadcast it throughout the sub-sector. Though it was intended for other Imperial ships to pick up, all factions in one way or another have intercepted it.

The Marines have barely held on with a few advanced manufacturing factories against an endless tide of chaotic barbarians. Abominable mutants and even daemons reinforce these unyielding hordes. The Cyclops Space Marines have suffered heavily in the years, facing mutations of their own, not unlike the chapters of the cursed founding. Worse still, this planet has a small native Exodite Eldar minority. How they have been allowed to live is unknown, but they have survived, and now fight alongside the Marines and their human servants.

They have sent out a call for help, from any quarter, in their struggle against the dark gods.

The situation on TYX-4e is now common knowledge to all factions, but only Uarthe has the ability to make contact, though it should not be difficult for other factions to do the same.

During an open session of the council of Triax, the Chairman addressed the assembled nobility and to the workers watching through the live broadcast. Cutting off the cries for blood or for scapegoats, he rose from his chair and spoke calmly, his voice tinged with an edge of Finality "Friends, colleagues, citizens, I speak to you now not as the chairman of this body of government, nor as the commander of the armed forces charged with your defense, but as a fellow citizen of the empire. We are faced with a great challenge before us. Our sister colonies on Beta and Theta have been brought to their knees by a blasphemous enemy whom now turn their sights to us. They are a foe whom seem without number or morality. We seem cut off and isolated, forced to stand alone against this threat to our own morality and ways of life.

In this view you would only be right on one count. The enemy before us possess a very finite number, whom bleed and die, just as any enemy of the imperial state has. Look to your left, and to your right, and you will see that we do not stand alone in this fight. Even now a call for reinforcements has been made, and responded to. So now it is our duty to weather this insult, to fill our skies with the shattered wreckage of their fleet, and to choke our streets with their filthy carcasses. We will persevere, as we have so many times before."

By this time even the most stubborn noble has been silenced. With a flourish, the chairman, in his full elaborate regalia of state motioned to his side, where a crucible the size of a punch bowl was being set up, a small plasma flare set below it, heating it to a red glow within a few seconds. He began with the great chain of office, an elaborate and rather heavy set chain made from platinum. He placed it in the crucible where it was quickly reduced to a flowing liquid, which was poured into an ingot case. " I sacrifice the trappings of office to vouchsafe our victory. This chain, which was worn by the governor of the triax system for nearly a thousand years... enough platinum to provide wiring for our guidance systems to outfit fifty of our hell-strike missiles." He continues removing the ornate jewelry, similarly placing them within the crucible. He named each piece as it was rendered to a puddle of separating elemental components and set into ingots to cool.

Finally he came to the sword at his hip "This sword, which has been a symbol of state for as long as this colony has been a part of the empire. This sword I will not sacrifice today. For today it becomes a symbol of our resistance to these our tainted foes. For as long as this sword remains in my possession, I will continue to strive with every fiber of my being to bring about our holy absolution from this abomination. And while they defile our streets with their very presence, I will use this sword to meet out their leadership and bring their sinful existences to a screaming halt."

He then motions to the assembled nobility and councilmen "I invite you all to make similar sacrifices for the future of our beloved home. This is the time to show your true devotion to your fellow citizens and the empire who needs us now. Now is the time to put forth action in words stead." With that, the crucible was moved to the center of the council chamber, and the chairman retakes his seat, his form now sleek in the half light, lacking the usual glitter.

Flashpoint 2: Darkness Descending

The beginning of M42.010 looked bleak for the Imperium of Man. The lost and the damned were on the march throughout the sub-sector against several Imperial targets.

With the growing chaos in the Diodachi and Trajanus sub-sectors, the Imperium could spare no resources to aid the beleagured men of Nabataea, despite the pleas of the Veryn for the crusade against the heretics. All that was received was moral support from sector command, in the form of Inquisitors Hellmann, Molotov, and Kress, who, along with their multitudinous servants, who have dedicated themselves to protecting the Imperial factions from a fifth column of cultists.

The forces of chaos have already overrun two mining worlds essential to the Imperial economy and war effort. Both the Trade Consortium and the Imperial Lens Network rely on ores mined from those worlds. The occupiers have their own problems, as food shortages are a distinct possibility in the near future.

In the re-discovered Cretan system (TYX-4) the Cyclops space marines face a slow but inevitable defeat at the hands of legions of beastmen. The planet Tiryns has already fallen, and Mycenae looks to soon follow.

Still, there is not all bad news for the Imperium. There enemies seem to be acting on their own, while the Imperium works together to achieve its goals. The war in Nabataea echoes of the 13th Black Crusade, fought less than a decade ago. While the ruinous powers are finding great success planetside, the Imperium is scoring naval victories.

The joint Heirs of Guilliman-Trade Consortium fleet has severely damaged to navy of Oblivion Bliss and the shipbuilding capacity of the Army of the Grand Design. What effect this may have on the future of the war.

The next flashpoint of the war seems obvious. Already the Army of the Grand Design has bombarded the primary moon of the Triax system, Triax IV Alpha. The troopships have been loaded and there seems only one clear target. But who knows what the Lord of Change has in mind? Perhaps there is a different target, or perhaps they will simply try to hold onto their gains.

With so much uncertainty on both sides of the struggle, the men and women of Triax have girded themselves for the coming clash, inspired by fear and the brave example of their Chairman. Meanwhile, the slaves to darkness are eager to sate their bloodlust…

Fortress Monastery of the Heirs of Guilliman

The sounds of activity were heard throughout the fortress monastery. Preparations for the inevitable conflict were taking place at a feverous pace. As this work was going, intense debating was going on in the Master’s Hall. Twelve Brother-Captains sat around a Holo-pict display. At the head of the room sat the Chapter Master himself.
Master Ickaris tapped his massive knuckles against his seat to get everyone’s attention. When all were silent he began to speak calmly as if discussing the weather. “So we are beset on all sides... what word have we from the Eighth Company?”
Captain Ninco spoke quietly, trying to emulate his Master. “They say that it is slow going. Many worlds have fallen to the heretics and taking them back is a long process. They have fought on two planets and were on route to a third when last we had contact. Losses were few. The Heretic advances in the Diodachi sub-sector has been halted by the efforts of Lady General Sulla but the Tranjanus sub-sector burns. Imperial forces there are routed. It is said that war bands of Traitors lead the fight in that sub-sector.” Hisses and growls were made around the table at the mention of Chaos Space Marines. Despite it being millennia since any in the chapter had fought the Traitorous Space Marines the memories of the Horus Heresy ran deep.
The Master held up his hand and all were silent once more. “What of our friends in the Trade Consortium? How do they fare?”
Ninco shifted in his seat and leaned forward. “Things go awry for them. The Army of Grand Design has fallen upon their main system and has taken two of the three moons. Their capital has been bombarded and signs show a full scale invasion is imminent. While astropathic messages from them say that they won’t be taken, tactical analyses suggest that after a long and bloody battle they will be defeated.”
“Why should we let it come to that?” Brother-Captain Darius stood from his seat, raises his voice as he spoke. “Let our glorious chapter rise up and smash these heretics to dust and then lets go finish what we started and burn their worlds!” Darius had a great tactical mind but lacked patience. Out bursts like this were usual during meetings.
Scout-Captain Urial looked down the table at Darius and replied, “But what if that’s what these heretics want? What if the assault on the Trade Consortium is merely a feint for something greater? Could it be that the Chaos advances in the other sub-sectors weren’t random occurrences but a part of a larger plan? To rush out blindly might be a fatal error.”
Before Darius could reply Master Ickaris raised his hand and spoke, “Peace Darius, save your energy for the enemy. I have already given thought to what is happening in this and the other sub-sectors. We will respond, with strength and with intelligence. As always there are many threats trying to choke the Imperium. We are the Emperor’s tools of war and death and we will meet every threat. Prepare your companies; I will talk with each of you personally about your assignments. May the Emperor watch over you always.”

It is Always Darkest Before the Dawn

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress

Due to the twisting currents of the warp, the reinforcements from Oblivion Bliss arrived before the joint Consortium-Heirs of Guilliman relief force could arrive in system. As a result, the forces of chaos, fresh and ready for the fight, began a quick strike onto Triax IV Alpha…

Positioned in orbit over the major administrative centres and known fortifications, the chaos fleet began a fierce bombardment as corrupted transports prepared for combat drops. Unfortunately for the chaos fleet, if they could pummel the fortifications on the ground, then those fortifications could pound them. The lynchpin of the Consortium's defence was the massive ground-to-space cannon known as the Hammer of Witches (or, in high gothic, the Malleus Maleficarum). Silently, it powered up, and lay in wait for a target…

For now, however, the entire defence grid lay inactive. Small units from the Ominous Legion dropped onto the moon in various regions to engage in lightning terror raids. In the darkness of the blacked out planet, many raiding parties went off target, but the darkness only added to the fear caused by these raids.

It was only after these raiders had been allowed to work against the people of Consortium that the main force attempted to land. On finally seeing a target, the Hammer of Witches powered up and fired on one group of transports. The single massive coil gun, armed with a low yield nuclear device, launched it's payload into the night sky. It detonated in the midst of one group of transports, damaging some and shutting down the systems of others, sending them crashing to their doom. Their escorting frigate, EMP hardened, continued to work, but their shield was taken down in the blast, leaving it open to attack from extensive ground batteries that now powered up.

Luckily for the Ominous Legion, their dispersed landing pattern gave them some defence from the Hammer of Witches and the majority of their landing forces made it to the surface of the planet.

A flood of mutants and foul cultists flooded the streets of Triax IV Alpha's main cities. They were met by a defence not weakened by the previous days, but strengthened. The leadership of Chairman Khang, the citizens of the Triax and Norwalk systems stand united as never before. Every facet of society has focused towards the defence of Triax IV Alpha, and it showed on the battlefield. Millions of militia joined the fight alongside the TTC's regular forces. Those forces were led in person by the Chairman himself, who is said to have distinguished himself in battle.

Despite the fire from space and overwhelming numbers of attackers, the TTC held firm. The Chaos invaders were composed almost completely of infantry, with a few artillery pieces and scattered bits of armour. Additionally, the force was mostly poorly organized and armed cultists and mutants, surrounding a hard core of chosen. While chaos still had weight of numbers, the TTC wisely applied air power against them as well as armoured superiority. Massive casualties were inflicted by the TTC, but they were still pushed back, slowly.

They would not have to hold out long, however. Not long into the invasion, the combined TTC-Heirs of Guilliman fleet arrived to relieve the sector. Outgunned and already damaged from the planetary batteries, the Chaos fleet attempted to outwit the enemy to buy time for their transports to pull out.

The Imperial fleet stuck together and made directly for the chaos cruiser, slowing down only to deploy half of the Heirs of Guilliman chapter via thunderhawk. The cruiser retreated as quickly as it could, attempting to draw the Imperials as far from the transports as possible. Chaos escorts skirmished with Imperial ones as they tried to draw them away, but to no avail. Meanwhile, the remaining members of the Ominous Legion retreated to their transports, running the gauntlet of surviving fortifications.

The chaos cruiser managed to escape only through the incredible skill of it's captain, limping home to rejoin the remainder of it's comrades.

The garrisons on Triax IV Beta and Theta also retreated, but in their wake left devastation as major mining facilities were destroyed. Small bands of mutants have gone to ground on those planets are remain a menace.

The Enemy of My Enemy…

While the war raged in the Triax system, the struggle continued in TYX-4d&e. Though a relatively minor brush war in comparison to the fight for the Trade Consortium, both sides attempted to woo the marines. Oblivion Bliss attempted to persuade the marines with words, but the Imperium took a much more successful, and direct route…

Allies from three Imperial factions came to aid of the Cyclops Space Marine Chapter. In a show of solidarity not seen since the glory days of Tyrex, four Imperial armies marched side by side. With the advantage of heavy armour, air and space superiority, the Imperium systematically destroyed the rabid warbands of the planet. Losses were moderate but tolerable, largely absorbed by the fervent local soldiers who surged forward, chomping at the bit at the prospect of breaking the century old deadlock.

There is much still to be done, but the Cyclops on the way to regaining their homeworld.

Flashpoint 3: You can never go Home again

It was inevitable.

Ever since the coup in M42.005, war between Homite loyalists and the Veryn settlers/Homite government in exile was inevitable. The Homite military was not stupid; they knew Veryn forces were much larger than theirs off-world. However, the constant defection of Homite citizens was too much.

The straw that broke the camel's back in this case was the defection of half a division of infantry along with a sizable chunk of the Homite heartland.

The remaining Homite forces, supported by fanatical auxiliaries and equipped with significant heavy weaponry, they quickly swept away opposition. Many militiamen were cut off and forced to surrender, many pressed back into service.

The situation on the ground in early M42.011 sees a patchwork of beleaguered regiments in a defensive cordon around the spaceport in the largest, and now only, Veryn town on the planet. The survivors of the Homite government-in-exile are pleading for a counter-attack, while the soldiers are asking for a evacuation.

Homecoming

Just as the war on Home was inevitable, so was its conclusion. The Homite forces stood no chance alone again the Veryn military. Unwilling or unable to look beyond their borders for assistance, the people of Home suffered the consequences.

The Veryn military were quick to respond to the calls for aid. Arriving in the nick of time, the commander, Commodore Ruiter, took the initiative and bombarded the forces around the spaceport in a risky move. The unexpected attack threw the Homites into confusion.

Though the bombarding force was small, so were the Homite fortifications and ground forces. The Homites buckled down in their bunkers, making raids on the beleagured defenders of the spaceport, while Imperial Guard Regiments began to reinforce it.

The Imperial Guard were methodical in the destruction of the Homite military, or the Home Guard, as they had begun to call themselves. The superior discipline and weaponry of the Guard, along with their superiority in space, gave them all the advantages, though the Homites fought hard for their homeland.

They were aided in many areas by the local population. Chafing under years of oppression, and with the population of loyal fanatics mostly killed in the campaigning, the people of Home just wanted a chance at a peaceful life and gave whatever help their could to the Veryn soldiers. Militia garrisons, mostly Imperial troops forced to fight, surrendered whenever possible, further weakened the Home Guard.

The Rise and Corruption of the Atlan Ascendancy

Atla is an old world. Historians in the Jugurtha Subsector have records showing it to be the second system in the area to be colonized. It grew in might and splendor, though it was always overshadowed by its sister-planet of Tyrex. It was very similar to the capital planet of the subsector, but slightly worse or worse-off in almost every category. The Orks used it as a choice location for attacks, to avoid the more formidable defenses of Tyrex. The Merchants landed in the starports of Tyrex, the Imperial Navy stationed its resplendent fleets in Tyrex' orbit... the list goes on and on.

Even as both of the worlds matured into hives, Atla remained great in its aesthetic beauties below ground, where great cities built into chasms in the bejeweled, silicate-rich crust drew countless travelers.

It was around this time that the Warmaster Horus launched his dire, heretical assault against the Imperium. While many speak of the bold resistance of Tyrex, few sing lamentations for the fate of Atla. Forces of the World Eaters (some say commanded by Angron, the Prince of Blood himself) and countless Lost and Damned fell upon Atla. The world was nearly submerged by the dark forces, over half of it fell, billions were slaughtered. However, Salamander reinforcements turned the tide, and after months of battle, the tide was turned back. For the remainder of the war, Atla cleansed itself of remaining chaotic forces in its long, metal and earthen halls.

In the end, Atla survived, hobbled. Over three quarters of its population was killed, its beautiful crystal caverns shattered, corrupted, drowned in human ichor. Millennia would pass before the planet could fully heal.

But all this time, it was the resistance of Tyrex that was celebrated. Tyrex, who had barely even suffered the indignity of invaders feet on its surface.

Despite this, the people of Atla continued on, living simple, pious lives. But the stable times would have to come to an end.

Tyrex, the ever arrogant, and now decadent, was consumed by the warp. Order collapsed in most of the subsector. Atla, and the few worlds surrounding it, were the sole surviving forces loyal to the Imperium.

And thus did the Atlans continue on in their quiet ways, as new forces began to re-enter the subsector. Planets, which had collapsed into barbarism after the fall of Tyrex, rose again as independent systems. The Imperium's Space Marines returned. Tau forces of the Third Sphere expansion began to move in.

And through all of this, the Ascendancy of Atla (as it had called itself since the fall of Tyrex) remained like a stone in water, never wavering. However, the beginning of its own corruption was not far off.

It is unknown how the first genestealer arrived on Atla. That first genestealer himself does not know, as he was only semi-sentient at the time. He recalls a crash, a terrible fire, and an escape, down into tunnels and darkness.

And in this darkness, he began to infect the population. First, a single human, in a mostly-deserted deep in the Hive. Then, a group... then a community. As more and more minds became ensnared, he grew in intelligence. The cult continued to grow, and the young Genestealer Patriarch proceeded in absolute secrecy. As new generatiosn of purestrain genestealers were born, to perform the work of infection for him.

In carefully orchestrated actions, the Patriarch brought several figures from government under his control, moving up and up on the hierarchical ladder. Just before it would have become impossible to not notice the cult, and the odd behaviour of most of the Atlan population, the Ruling Council of Atla was taken over.

With a hiveworld now under his control (for the uninfected population, it was only a matter of time), the Patriarch sent out his progeny on spacefaring vessels, spreading his cult to the other worlds of the ascendancy.

It was just before the entirety of the population was finally tied to his will that the Inquisition discovered the cult's activity, due to the cessation of tribute payments.

That brings us to modern day. The pages of the future, however, remain unwritten.

Update 4: M42.010-M42.012

The Laughter of Dark Gods

The brutal civil war between loyal followers of the Imperium and the followers of the Dark Gods has continued into another three brutal years. The chaos of the initial uprisings and invasions have settled into clearly defined battle lines.

In the Diodachi sub-sector, several worlds have been liberated by the combined might of the Imperium. With most Imperial forces heading here, the forces of chaos have been overwhelmed. However, while significant progress has been made, the victories are becoming more and more difficult. The arrival of marines from the Ultramarines and the Heirs of Guilliman have made contributions to these victories, but the largest contribution by far has been from The Legion, who have sent half of their entire chapter to Diodachi.

Habaeian High Marshall Klafki has arrived in Diodachi. Along with Habaeian PDF and newly raised Guard regiments, Imperial Guardsmen from Cadia and Arakya have accompanied the High Marshall to relieve Sulla’s Valhallans.

The main theatre of war in the Diodachi sub-sector remains the Diaphanenus system, the former imperial sub-sector capital and current chaos stronghold. Lady General Jenit Sulla has led Imperial forces to victory throughout the system, leaving only the fortress world of Diaphanenus IV in chaos hands. Even now, the Heirs of Guilliman and Elysian and Haphaestian drop troops are wreaking havoc on the planet in preparation for a final offensive.

In the Trajanus sub-sector, things are looking grim. Imperial forces have no established the strong front line that they have in Diodachi. Even with the reinforcement of the significant numbers of Imperial Guard from Brimlock, Jopall, and Volpone as well as Adeptus Astartes from the Storm Lords, Black Dragons, and the remaining five companies of The Legion, the forces of chaos have continued to roam at will throughout the sub-sector.

The arrival of WAAAGH Grashnak has done little to improve things in the sub-sector. Marshall Macrinus has been hard pressed in the sub-sector, and relies heavily on the Imperial Navy to keep his two foes at bay.

Meanwhile, the word of the Garentian crusade is spreading, encouraging tens of thousands of militia to take up arms to join the fight. Already, many are on their way to the Trajanus sub-sector….

The Imperium has called on Vernith, The Imperial Lens Network, and The Trade Consortium to raise 1 Regiment of either Imperial Guard Infantry or Armour in addition to the 10% tithe. These newly raised regiments will be sent to either Diodachi or Trajanus, with decision in the hands of the tithing faction.

Matters Military:

The Green Tide
The entry of four new powers into the Bahmali War has changed the course of history for this backwater faction…

Mandala II
The Orks have not returned to Mandala II, though the Bahmali have significantly reinforced this planet, thanks to relief efforts on Agrippa III

Bahmal
Rioting caused by terrorists, loss of control by civil officials, the paralysis of the normally efficient Bahmali intelligence agencies, and the fears of Orkish invasion rocked the capital world in early and mid M42.010, but the victories to in the wars turned the tide of public opinion long enough for the government to regain control.

Result: Small economic disruption for the Bahmali, reduced growth rate and one more turn in recession.

Agrippa III
Four factions have answered the Bahmali’s desperate pleas for aid. The Tau’s support has been subtle, with water caste diplomats working their way through the halls of power on Bahmal and fire caste military advisors training Bahmali warriors in the use of jetpacks and pulse carbines.

The Hymbaline Reach has offered their own expertise in logistical support and fire support, directing artillery fire down onto the orks and scything outnumbered fighta-bombas out of the air.

More significant aid has come from the Coalition of Worlds, who have sent a huge force to Agrippa III. Leading the force is a machine as large as an Imperator Titan, with less armour, but with the agility matched only by Eldar titans and several supplementary systems unknown on other vehicles of its size. Incredibly expensive, the new thing, dubbed the Galactic Colossus, is rumoured to be AI controlled and has torn a swath through the Orkish horde. The massive force supplied by the Coalition to defend the Galactic Colossus and the Bahmali has been greatly appreciated by the Bahmali.

While wave upon wave or Ork appeared on the ground in Agrippa III, it seemed that a long and arduous battle was ahead for the human defenders. But the first challenge was in the space above…

An equal Orkish and human fleet fought for position above Agrippa III, with several harsh skirmishes between the fleets. Significant damage was done to both fleets as they jockeyed for the best positions to land troops and provide fire support

Suddenly, as if from nowhere, two dozens shimmering ships appeared out of the darkness, destroying a damaged Ork cruiser in the first volley. Soon, the Orkish fleet had been reduced to a series of burning husks.

Thousands of warriors descended to the planets surface while the Bahmali and Coalition navies watched, unable and unwilling to stop them.

The glimmering warriors descended on the Orks, already hard pressed to hold onto their landing zones.

Realizing that the strange warriors were allies, the forces of humanity charged into the fray, scattering the orks. With complete air and space superiority, the two forces annihilated any pockets of Orkish resistance.

The strange warriors left as quickly and mysteriously as they had come, but they left behind traces of their passing. In a ravine near northernmost Ork landing site, a group of corpses were found, ambushed by the Orks. The corpses were unmistakably Eldar. The colours they bore were those of Uarthe Craftworld.

Dark Millenium

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
A geurilla war was waged on the Triax moons in the six months following the chaos withdrawal. Led by Inquisitors Hellman and Molotov, Imperial infantry flooded onto the moons.

With nowhere to hide outside of the domed cities, an agree population out for blood, outnumbered two-to-one, the dogged persistence of the Inquisitors, and the addition of substantial reinforcement from space marine scouts, who specialize in just this sort of anti-insurgency warfare, the mutants were routed out quickly, efficiently, and mercilessly.

After dropping off the scouts, the Heirs of Guilliman moved on to their next target…

There is only the Emperor, and he is our shield and protector
The Marines of the Heirs of Guilliman have led an assault against the Army of the Grand Design planet of Hermes, accompanied by elements of the Imperial Lens Network’s army.

The main goal of the assault was an attempt to rescue any Imperial loyalists from the planet. Previous attempts to organize Imperial loyalists into some sort of resistance have been uncovered by internal security and has led to a bloody purge by the Army of the Grand Design, dashing Imperial hopes of a fifth column on Hermes.

Upon arrival, the tiny Chaos fleet was quick to retreat to the Turanea system, escaping damage.

The Imperium laid down a bombardment before landing the marine force away from the main settlements of the planet via drop pod. Supporting them were several guard regiments and Tau mercenaries. While the Chaos troops equalled their opponents in numbers, their force consisted of a hard core of Chosen supported by large number pf cultists and cultist militia. The superior quality of the majority of the Imperial force, as well as the presence of air, space, and armour superiority has resulted in an Imperial kill ratio approaching 1:5. However, the powerful Chosen were able to inflict some damage on the invaders.

The Imperial force was able to take control of all of the population centres in a matter of a few months. With those centres under control, they set about purging the taint of chaos, destroying shrines and killing mutants, as well as generally wrecking havoc and destroying fortifications.

Untainted citizens were invited onto transport ships to escape from Hermes. Many thousands took up the offer, many of whom did not care about the Imperium, but were terrified of their overlords. However, those refugees numbers in the tens of thousands from a population of millions. The spread of the taint on Hermes has been great and few remained untouched. Now that the refugees have left, it is safe to say that only the followers of the dark gods remain on that planet.

Unfortunately, the campaign had dragged on long enough for the Chaos fleet to arrive from Turanea. Though outgunned, the chaos fleet had numbers on its side and did not have to protect an unwieldy number of transport vessels. The chaos fleet made attacks of opportunity on the transports ships, only to be beaten or frightened off whenever the Sword of Guilliman was able to bring its guns to bear. Despite the weight of numbers against chaos, their brilliant commander and freedom of action in the system has resulted in a stalemate in space.

In the end, Imperial forces withdrew from the planet and the system with civilian vessels packed with over eighty thousand refugees and the Lens Network transport carrying another six thousand more. Chaos stragglers have hid in fortifications and waited until the Imperium left. Any refugees who could not get off planet were slaughtered.

Both sides are calling this a victory. Chapter servants are hailing the marines as heroes for successfully rescuing so many beleaguered loyalists. Meanwhile, the Army has used propaganda to spin the stalemate in space and Imperial withdrawal into a victory. The Heirs have once again proved the power of concentration of force.

Inquisitor Hellman has offered to help the Heirs of Guilliman with ‘processing’ the refugees.

The Enemy of My Enemy…
The war to reclaim the worlds of TYX-4/Tiryns has continued. The Cyclops, aided by their Imperial allies, continue the struggle. Although Vernith has withdrawn its small force, the continued presence of TTC and Lens Network forces have continued to tell against the hordes of chaos.

Though they retained they edge in numbers, the forces of darkness are only partly industrialized and now disorganized. The presence of Imperial armour, air power, and space power have broken chaos’ will to fight.

By the end of the fifth year of campaigning, the forces of chaos have been completely routed. Only roving bands of desperate nomads remain. Now that the Cyclops homeworld of Tiryns has been elimitated, the Cyclops now set their sights on the sister world of Mycenae….

The Dividing Line: TYX-2d

After seeing the terrifying display of Eldar power, the warring factions of TYX-2d have surrendered to the might of the craftworld. ‘Loyal’ factions have taken advantage of the opportunity to oppress their neighbours, conquering or enslaving them for the good of their Eldar overlords. What the Eldar think of this, no one is sure, but one thing is certain: The entire world is now under the control of the Eldar and their puppet kingdoms.

Results:
TYX-2d has surrendered to Uarthe. In total, the fighting has reduced its economy by 20. The planet is a feudal world and will be added to Uarthe’s stats.

Affairs Internal:

The outlook is good in the territory of the Heirs of Guilliman. The region is recovering from the recession of the last few years, with positive economic prospects all around. The population is ecstatic after the victories of the last three years. The victories in Triax, Hermes, and Diaphanenus have greatly enhanced popular feeling amongst the people. There has been some criticism from the upper echelons about hiring xenos mercenaries, but in the current political climate, anything spoken against the beloved chapter is shouted down by the masses.

Life is, unsurprisingly, chaotic in the demesne of the Army of the Grand Design. Propaganda runs day and night claiming the battles at Triax and Hermes as victories. The propaganda is partly successful. Many genuinely believe they are victories, emphasizing the damage done to the TTC. Some don’t believe it, seeing the loss of men at Triax and the damage done on Hermes, but most are afraid to speak out for fear of a purge. The economy is recovering is most worlds as the Army recovers from recession. Hermes, however, has been thrown into chaos due to the devastation of the Imperial attack.

The Veryn economy continues to flourish. They have reached a peak in economic growth. This rapid expansion may signal an inevitable recession, but for the time being, the Veryn economy is growing rapidly, especially considering it is taking business away from the Lens Network and TTC thanks to the troubles those two are facing. With the struggles on Home over, spirits are high. However, the world of Garentian crusade has spread. Tens of thousands of people have abandoned their jobs and taken up arms to root out the forces of chaos. So far, they have formed six units of militia, mainly from the planets Earenii and Vernith. They are demanding transport to either the Diodachi or Trajanus sectors, or to be used locally against the dark powers. (Note: If you decide to send these troops to another sub-sector, your transports will return for use after roughly six months in game)

With the Orkish WAAAGH defeated, the Bahmali are attempting to pick up the pieces. The damage was less severe than many feared, thanks to the quick response of the Bahmali Emperor’s allies. Civil strife has prevented the boom in Bahmali heavy industries from revitalizing the Bahmali economy, as rioters crowd the streets in some areas and protestors refuse to go to work. With the defeat of the Orks, these problems seem to have generally melted away.

Things are difficult for the Orks in the region of space run by the survivors of Mogz Meanest and Greenest. The human slaves have begun to wonder whether they might take advantage of the weakness of their overlords. Several servile revolts have already been put down, though how long the much reduced and leaderless Orks can hold on remains to be seen. Whether a great leader will emerge from the wreckage, or a civil war breaks out between rival bosses remains to be seen.

Peace reigns at last among the noble houses of the Iydith League. A new dynasty has taken power and a compact signed between the royal house and their chief nobles. While this has caused constant disruption, it has not done much real damage, and the economy has been quick to recover.

Uarthe craftworld is becoming slightly strained by the flow of Eldar from the craftworld. It is believed that natural growth will fill this void quickly, but only if the flow of talented young Eldar to the colonies stops. However, the overall Eldar population of Uarthe’s zone of control has for the first time in many centuries increased, rather than decreased. Still, this increase is less than and extra 1 birth per 1000 women. The Hrud and Eldar of Varnee have entered into a complex relationship, with Eldar in control of the top positions in the political and economic spheres, while Hrud control the military of the planet and are moving to fill the middle and upper-middle positions elsewhere.

The Trade Consortium has not had a good year. The crushing tax load inflicted on its people has caused economic contraction. Normally, this would have led the money-conscious people to revolt. However, the extraordinary circumstances of the Triax campaign and the electrifying personality of the TTC Chairman has united the people and convinced them that a few years of hardship are nothing compared to the lifetime of anguish they would suffer under the yoke of the dark gods. With the Triax system fully reconquered, it is time for the survivors to pick up the pieces and rebuild.

Oblivion Bliss has continued on in the last two years in isolation, it’s economy surviving on it’s own, with economic growth continuing as before. The deficit in resources continues, but harsh regime instituted in the colony has alleviated this somewhat.

The Coalition of Worlds has invested large sums of money into the development of the economic potential of its worlds. An expanding manufacturing base and burgeoning service sector has driven growth upwards, with economists looking favourably on the future. It is believed the faction will grow out of the recession sooner than expected. The Coalition propaganda machine has made much of its aid to the Bahmali and their new war machine, to which the population is responding favourably.

The Imperial Lens Network has been crippled by a series of shortages that has led to reduced working hours, production, and a decrease in consumer goods. Protests have begun to spread through the hive world of Patavium. The long term effects of these shortages are unknown, but the outlook for the sub-sector’s largest economy is not good. The Lens Network is looking for alternative sources of food and resources to make up its shortfall.

The peaceful development of Sept Kadra has continued for another three years. The people are praising their Tau masters for keeping them free of the violence that has embroiled most of the region. The economy grows and the people are happy.

The rapid growth of the Atlan economy has led to an inevitable downturn in the economy. While this likely signals the beginnings of a recession, and economic growth has fallen to almost nothing this cycle, the people do not seem to be distressed by this. They have merely taken it as a signal to redouble their efforts to improve their worlds. They believe hard work will be enough to bring about recovery, and may be right. If the Atlan can recover from the recession, they may be able to edge out the Lens Network as the largest economy in the sub-sector.

The Hymbaline economy, for many years in unprecedented expansion, has suffered the inevitable economic slowdown from so many years of rapid growth, similar to what has happened in the Atlan Ascendancy. However, the low taxation of the Reach has prevented this economic slowdown from turning into a full-blown recession. Growth has continued, though at a much-reduced rate. The people of the Reach are praising the policies of their government, as well as the intervention against the Orks, a clear and present danger as they border on the Bahmali.

(Note to foolish_icarus: You didn’t include a tax rate for this cycle, so I used the same tax rate as last year.)

On the Frontiers:

Colonization efforts have slowed by Oblivion Bliss. Their surviving colony has turned into a hellish mining pit. The mines fed by endless slaves moving from the homeworlds to the mines. Though the colony’s economy is non-existent, the planet’s extensive mineral has been exploited by this system.

The dead world GJI-7c now produces 1 resource.

Uarthe’s colonization has begun at a dizzying pace for such a slowly evolving race. On the colony world of Aetis, the inhabitants have achieved a standard of living as high is believed to be achievable on the planet for the time being. Live is easier for Uarthe colonists than any other colony in the sub-sector. However, the extensive colonies are in some areas as empty as parts of the craftworld itself, as the trickle of Eldar willing to leave the craftworld has dried up.

On Junee, the flow of Eldar colonists has also slowed. However, with no official policy on their request, Hrud has quickly taken the place of Eldar colonists, selling everything they have to buy transport from Varnee. Colonization efforts are continuing much as planned and no trouble has been encountered from Ork straggles. The Eldar who have decided to settle on Varnee have established themselves in control of the planet’s industries almost completely. They now dominate the political and economic system, though the Hrud do not seem to mind, as they are still much, much better than their former Orkish overlords.

Aetis now produces 15 economy. Junee does not produce anything yet, but if trends continue, will produce something next update. It will be increasingly difficult to find Eldar settlers for the colonies from the craftworld.

The Vernith colony of Repaix has received no aid from the Veryn government. However, the colony is now self-sufficient and a slow stream of colonists continues to arrive. The economy continues to grow slowly, aided by the healthy Veryn economy.

On Home, peace finally reigns. However, the Homite people are a shadow of their former selves. The Veryn government has given Home a very light tax, which has done much to help the economy recover, but the scars cut by the Homite war will be a long time in healing. With over a third of the men of Home either killed or crippled in the war, there are concerns of what will happen to the people. Marriages are common between Veryn soldiers (seen by many as heroes) and women who have despaired of ever finding a Homite husband.

The joint colony world of the Coalition of Worlds and Sept Kadra, Editha, has flourished under the joint rule. Administrators from both worlds have been cautious, but eager to keep the other partner happy. Early success, and crises solved jointly, point to a prosperous future for the planet.

Sept Kadra’s colonization of KLS-11d has continued. The Tau’s focus this turn has been on this colony and Editha. Despite a few set backs, the three species are building a new society on the planet. It is rumoured that Vespid have asked to colonize one of the gas giants in the system, which possesses a very rare mix of characteristics that makes it ideal for the Vespid.

KLS-11d produces no income this turn, but might soon.

The Trade Consortium colony of Tsuchi has continued to grow, despite the troubles in the Triax system. Though fears of invasion have the moral fortitude of the colonists, three years of war scares that have ended in nothing have created a very stoic, fatalist attitude among the colonists. The colony continued to flourish despite the cloud of fear that had blanketed the colony as the hinterlands are being exploited.

Tsuchi now has an economy of 5.

The development of the Atlan colony of Karak continues. The dedication of the colonists to the cause of Atlan expansion has done as much as the government funding, relatively low compared to that of the other colonial factions. This hard work ensures is ensuring a successful, expanding colony. No sign has been seen of the previous Jokaero to disturb the colony.

Karak does not produce income this turn, but if trends continue, will produce some for the next update.

Diplomatic Actions:

To: Hymabline Reach, Coalition of Worlds, Sept Kadra, Uarthe Craftworld
From: The Bahmali Empire

We thank you all for your contributions in saving us from the terror of Mog and his orks! We are open to suggestions from our three allies on whether to liberate the slave populations of the Orkish homeworlds, or to be content with out safety. We would also like to consolidate our friendship into a defensive alliance.

We would also like to thank our mysterious Eldar saviours… and inquire about their intentions towards the Bahmali and the Orks.

Other Happenings:

The anomaly investigated by the Tau and the Coalition of Worlds has collapsed in on itself. The ships have disappeared without a trace. They may still be out there in the warp, somewhere… but most likely, they have been lost forever. Only time will tell.

(Coalition of Worlds loses 1 Escorts, Kadra Sept loses .5 Escorts)

Three new rents in real space have opened throughout the sector, seriously destabilizing warp travel in the sub-sector and causing great unease in the sector. Inquisitors Molotov and Hellman have called for support from the Ordo Malleus, anticipating future needs.

**********************************

The Tau mercenaries have been hired.

Two units of Tarellian Dog Soldiers have made their presence known and are available for hire. They will not enter the employ of an Imperial faction.

A Kroot warsphere has entered the sector occupied by four Kroot Mercenary groups available for hire.

Please let me know is there are any mistakes or questions. There are probably a fair few of both.
