US actor Snipes sentenced to three years
American actor Wesley Snipes has been sentenced to three years in prison for failing to file his federal income tax returns.

The sentenced was the maximum under the law, which US prosecutors had recommended for the star of the Blade movie series. He was found guilty in February of failing to file tax returns for 1999-2001.

Snipes was acquitted on two felony charges of filing false claims and fraud in seeking millions of dollars of refunds in other tax years.

But prosecutors had urged the court to impose a stiff penalty on the actor nonetheless, because of his notoriety and the potential of a high-profile case to deter tax crime nationwide.

Snipes' lawyers, in calling for leniency, had contended that he was convicted only of three misdemeanours and said the government's tax loss in his case amounted to less than $US400,000($A422,030).
This is very surprising. I knew he was on trial, but a celebrity actually being found guilty, and punished, no less? That doesn't happen often.

Aww, I liked Snipes :(

He's been acquitted on two felony charges. If you ask me, he's lucky.

That only happened when ur out of favour by the public...

i kind of like his movie in the past... be it a lesson to other celebrities not to make lousy movies next time.

Wesley Snipes' wikipedia article says a lot about the guy. Incidentally, Snipes was convicted in Ocala, Florida. Not LA or Hollywood, which just might explain why he didn't receive the patented celebrity leniency. I wouldn't be surprised if Snipes gets out earlier somehow though.

he got the max wanted by the prosecution, how is that lucky?
Probation would have been lucky...

He's been found guilty of a simple misdemeanor, a lot less problematic than a felony. He probably won't do too long inside, if he ever goes in. My guess is that he'll buy his way into house arrest/limited freedom for a short while before going back to his current lifestyle.

I remember seeing on commercials a while back that he was facing a maximum of thirty years in prison. If those were correct, then he is most definitely lucky at avoiding those felony charges and only getting three years.

You can get off for killing your wife, but if you screw with the IRS....

Hopefully they freeze him, or else no jail will be able to hold him... good thing Stallone isn't frozen yet.

Nah, they're only making a remake of the first season of Prison Break. They'll soon jail Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise and other actors and they'll accidentally end up in the same prison...

The jury acquitted him, call that luck if you will... A judge threw the book at him and that aint lucky.

This is one reason why I dont want the gov't in charge of sentencing, it corrupts the purpose of a jury system.

I experienced that first hand. A 10 year sentence for a rape committed by the son of the local chief of police, who was also the judge's cousin. Aren't small towns fun? Obviously, when I appealed, before a different judge in a different city, I was released.

You raped someone?

Pay attention, before you say anything stupid.

"A 10 year sentence for a rape committed by the son of the local chief of police..."

So you're not the son of the local chief of police? :dubious:

Please don't attempt to joke with me about this. I do not find it in the least bit amusing.

Merely pointing out that perhaps Abbadabba wasn't actually as stupid as you make out. He's far stupider than that.

OT: From what I understand Wesley got off lightly. He'd been repeatedly warned that this was on the cards and tried in a number of ways to cover his tracks.

Glad to see a post from you. :)

As an antitaxist, I am deeply aggrieved to hear that another antitaxist has been persecuted for his beliefs.
