[GRAPHICS] What If Unit Thread: Matsuda123, Kine100, and Mattem's Latest Additions

You can do it. I believe in you.

I think the stand is doable actually. If you wanted something that could be used for multiple units I would go with the redcoats skeleton. All the gunpowder units are missing the RClavicle bone for some reason. Except the redcoat.

Then modify the gun to look like the musket with the stand. Then add a bone for the stand. Then add visibility controllers to the rest of the kfs to make it invisible when not in use.

No animating the human required. :)

Lol, I wish I believed in me. I know I believe in your capabilities. You seem to have a real knack for cracking those old tutorials, and then going further than that. It is very impressive. I gotta figure out a suitable animation for that transport though, I really should have checked the number of guns before making it. Ah well.

Yeah that could work... I'll see what I can do. Gonna draw up concepts for the wide array of different cultural groups. Luckily I have an idea for the Meso gunner already. :)

Here is the Pot de Fer, along with a viable cannonier to go along with it.

I didn't notice before, but when I was swapping in the french dude for the cannonier he was squashed. I looked at the fire cannon and saw the samurai was squashed too, but not as noticeable. I ended up having to re-rig him to the skeleton. I guess the skeleton has the same bones, but they aren't in the same places. So, need to fix the fire cannon as well.

Anyway, this was basically fire cannon 2.0. Cannon with 4 wheels that shoots arrows. Not exploding arrows though.

I thought something looked strange about the Samurai, and that's probably why I couldn't exchange the models. Ah well, once it is fixed, I will reupload it and maybe offer two cannonier variations.

Meanwhile, this looks great good sir. :) I'm excited to finish it up and release it. I love early gunpowder units. :D Thank you~

I just had an interesting dream:

I saw a small Greek or other Mediterranean city with circular walls. There was a super huge mega-giga-big trebuchet or ballista. It took the whole area of the city's main square. It was so big the you couldn't turn it only if you deconstruct and rebuild it but had a very huge range. Someone even joked about it (although I didn't see any people in the city) that "To turn it you have to turn the whole city".

Obviously it wouldn't be a very effective weapon unless the enemy has to pass through a very narrow area, like a valley or ships on a river. But could be an interesting unit: Has a range of 2 tiles, high attack value but almost no defense. Is always captured with the city. Cannot move. Each city can have only one of it. And most importantly it can attack only one pre-set tile or take a turns action to select a new target tile.

So do you know anything like this ever existing? Is there a name for it?

Here you go. I like this samurai a lot better than the other.

Me too. The other one looks so odd, as many vanilla CIV IV models do. Thanks man. :) I think I'm going to make a Meso cannonier for my Meso Bombard and get that fixed too... I think I forgot to have the wheels animated lol.

MightyToad, I was thinking of something. Do you think it is possible to use the Slinger unit's animation to throw grenades attached to ropes instead? I was thinking of a few early grenadier replacement units... Two such variations are featured in the pictures.

That certainly sounds interesting. I can't say I have ever heard of a weapon that large, but there may have been trebuchets on rotating platforms. I'll have to look into it. What era do you think this city was in?

Since I saw it in a dream and not on National Geographic it doesn't really matter
But I think it should come with the same tech as the original trebuchet or later. But the point is that it is too big for a rotating platform.

Not that I know of, but it does remind me of Archimedes. He invented some crazy things. Not a giant trebuchet. He invented this thing called "the claw" that would hook onto enemy roman ships, and throw them out of the water.
I don't know how you would set this up at all. Not my area of expertise. Maybe it could be mostly done with XML, but the two tile range I think would require one of the python guys assistance.
I think Kathy has a trebuchet with hamster wheels that might be a starting point.

Yeah, just add a rope to the grenade I suppose. The peltast animations might work. I don't think any unit throws with two hands like it your picture.

I can assure you all I am still working on new units. Don't let the silence worry you. :)
I'm dragging my feet getting around to the musket/harquebus unit. I think I will go with rifleman animations instead of the redcoat since they are more generic. Without the tea drinking idiosyncrasies.

Well it would look strange to see that unit drinking english tea....btw whats going with the ships front just wondering
The original plan was to do a brig and a lugger. The brig based on USS Niagara. And the lugger a pirate vessel based on HM hired armed lugger Black Joke.
But, I've put them on the shelf to do requests for now. Partly because there are no suitable hulls to use. So, have to mostly build them manually.

Here is how it is looking so far. The Civ5 Janissary's musket looked close to what we need. I scaled it up slightly, and extended the barrel. And added a stand. The stand is just static, and only appears for the fortify and strike animations.

I think the Civ5 musketman model will work for the dude. At least for European civs. Still need something for asians, and other civs.

Makes sense. Doing a good job regardless!
