So what is a tragedy?

The dictionary I have says
Noun: tragedy
1. An event resulting in great loss and misfortune
2. Drama in which the protagonist is overcome by some superior force or circumstance; excites terror or pity

I was going to say that people use the word tragedy far to much and here is a nice example. The Columbine killing was a tragedy. The opening post not so much.

Never quote the dictionary. The dictionary is for introducing people to words they don't know, not for debate on the nuances of a word's meaning.

I think a tragedy is one of those words that used to mean something very extreme, but is losing it's strength. Like socialism.
