what is the history behind ur CFC name?

I wanted to be recognised as a portuguese easilly as being a Portuguese. That way it's normal I don't have NET at home and people would accept better that.

Besides, I love my country.

(I wouldn't die for it, as I think it is stupid, but I am very proud: good weather, good food, good beaches (sand and sun...), good wine, good landscape, peacefull, warm in climate and people,... :) )

A man who loves his country: nothing wrong with that!

(And I hear it's a nice country to love.) :)

Thx :)

We here have a good standard of living. Especially if you consider the non-human made things: sun, absense of natural disasters, peace, good landscape, good places to go...

"La vita est bela" :D

What is the history behind one's CFC name?
Well, I was pondering what name to use when I was registering, when suddenly the room disappeared, and I found myself standing on a strange rocky outcrop on a towering mountain overlooking a blasted and desolate plain.
Before I could exclaim my surprise with a droll exclamation, or even light my pipe, I was battered by a roaring wind, and the sky turned black with terrible clouds that looked like huge bats.A ululating chorus of discordant otherworldly cries of anguish, foreboding, and eldritch power throbbed inexorably over the wind. I thought to myself "Now, this is something you don't see everyday."
A tiny point of light appeared, and rapidly grew to a circular gap in the clouds, from which flowed a pillar of brilliant light that shone like liquid fire. The screaming was drowned out by what seemed to be a massed choir, wordlessly emitting sounds of heavenly beauty that made the heart ache with longing (Upon reflection though, I realize that was just indigestion)
A voice that sounded like Charlatan Heston boomed out from the ether:
"Are you Simon Darkshode, the only man in existence who can unlock the inner mysteries of the deepest sanctums of creation and the universe?"
"No, I'm Simon Darkshade, Evil Dictator, Fascist and Dodgy Film Affecianado."
"Oh sh*t. I must have the wrong number. Terribly sorry, i was trying to reach the bloke who can program my VCR."
"Now worries, G. It happens to the best of us."
"Still up for tea on Thursday?"
"Certainly, My Lord. I'll be bringing the biscuits."
"I'm looking forward to that."

And before I knew it, I was back in my chair, looking at the flashing cursor on the computer screen, with nothing to show for my experience but some slightly mussed hair, and a lingering scent of brimstone.
So I decided "Bugger it. I'll just use my real name."

And so it was that Simon Darkshade was the name one used here.

I've seen at least a couple other threads like this in the past.

Switch625 is the name of a Def Leppard song.

This one I've wondered about.... ;)

My name is a slight corruption of an ancient term, either Greek or Slavic-derived, meaning "vampire". In modern Greek (as the venerable but absent Az showed me) "vampire" is vrykolakas, but I've seen "vrylakas" in older Slavic texts describing the 6th and 7th century Slavic invasions of Attica. Reason # 1 was simply that it happened to be the term that was in my head when I registered.

However I am by profession a researcher, and the reason this stuck in my head at the time was that I often feel like a vampire in my work, as I am quite good at finding information that others prefer to keep hidden. I swoop in unnoticed and extract what I need, usually long gone before they realize what happened - like a mythical vampire. Many researchers connected to the investment and financial industries probably feel this way, especially in the age of Enron and WorldCom.

Breakfast pork made from piglets...? ;)

Just kidding. You live near the historical castle, I presume?

Davo is the name my friends call me by, my real name being Dave suprisingly. The 'comrade' comes from the whole communist thing.

Padma is a non-central figure in Gordon Dickson's Childe Cycle series of stories. He is first seen as a indeterminately-aged man, somewhere between 30 and 80, but various clues point to older rather than younger. The last time he is mentioned, he is probably between 120 and 150 yrs old. He was a major figure in the later period of the Exotic Splinter Culture. Their goal was to find/produce the next evolutionary advance in mankind.

An Outbond is something like an ambassador, or perhaps "cultural attache". In many cases there are also strong business overtones, as for a time the Exotics were the primary financial movers among the 14 Inhabited Worlds.

In any case, Padma (or sometimes padma_the_outbond) is the name I use most frequently on forums.

What i forget to mention before:
My Avatar name is "Imperator Austriae" becuase I'm Austrian and a massive Monarchist :D.
Of course not in politic meanings.. I'm just a history fan - and of course they great Empire of Austria has some kind of attraction to me...
