The proper name is "2D barcode" or "QR code".
Like already mentioned it's used as URL for phones, since it's easier to make a photo with your phone than to type in long URLs, but is also used as normal barcode (just for the logistics; barcode is barcode).
Edit: And nobody makes billions with that, the standard is free to use.
