advertisers love to splash them on stuff, but I personally don't know of anyone who's used one. I mean, it's bad enough that we have to look at ads, but now they expect us to interact with them??

The proper name is "2D barcode" or "QR code".
Like already mentioned it's used as URL for phones, since it's easier to make a photo with your phone than to type in long URLs, but is also used as normal barcode (just for the logistics; barcode is barcode).

Edit: And nobody makes billions with that, the standard is free to use.

It's also pretty damned useful as a next-generation bar code. You can compress a lot more information into that than you can a one-D barcode.

I dunno about you, but I don't have any markings on my forehead, or on my hand. We also don't have a world government or world currency, and are not making any steps toward such. Unless you want to count the US taking a country over every five years or so.
