An off-shoot of another thread...

Here's the dilly, yo: I never quite understood why AL Sharpton gets such an extreme reaction from folks here and why he seems to be such a polarizing figure in American politics. Looking at his track record (wiki entry on sharpton), I can understand how he can be over-the-top and a figure that obviously enjoys the attention of the media, but in terms of political views, he doesn't seem to be the extremist (read Farakhan) that I assumed he was. Don't get me wrong, he's had his fair share of gaffes and missteps, but it still doesn't seem to synch up in my mind. Are there things that I am missing or taking out of context? Are there things about american politics or society that I just don't understand?

So what's you beef with Sharpton? Hate him or love him? Don't care? Tell mw what to think of him, people :)

He wants equality for the proud chocolate people, so everybody here hates him.

Even the chocolate people hate him!

The "Rev. Al" is a race batter and racist himself.

From Wikipedia:

Tawana Brawley controversy
For more details on this topic, see Tawana Brawley.
On November 28, 1987, Tawana Brawley, a 15-year-old black girl, was found smeared with feces, lying in a garbage bag, her clothing torn and burned and with various slurs and epithets written on her body in charcoal. Brawley claimed she had been assaulted and raped by six white men, some of them police officers, in the village of Wappingers Falls, New York.

Attorneys Alton H. Maddox and C. Vernon Mason joined Sharpton in support of Brawley. A grand jury was convened; after seven months of examining police and medical records, the jury determined that Brawley had fabricated her story. Sharpton, Maddox and Mason accused the Dutchess County prosecutor, Steven Pagones, of racism and of being one of the perpetrators of the alleged abduction and rape. The three were successfully sued for slander and ordered to pay $345,000 in damages, the jury finding Sharpton liable for making seven defamatory statements about Pagones, Maddox for two and Mason for one. Really, people, look it up.

'Splain to me, Lucy!

Oh Ricky!

Al will look for any reason to inject a race issue anywhere. And play it up as much as possible. Imus comes to mind as does the Duke LAX team thing. Thats his MO, to cause problems. Even if the is no race issue he'll make one. Like when TMZ said Boucey Knowls' costume made her look like a roboho.

He's one of the biggest and most prominent racists in the public forum.

Every single thing he says publicly is about race.

He is one of the people whose statements ensure that blacks are permanent victims. Jesse Jackson is another.

The "rev. Jackson" is worse. He literally threatens companies and strong arms them to donate to his rainbow coalition. He uses race as a blackmail tool to a much higher degree then Sharpton. As much as they are scum they pale in comparison to Charles Barron in the hateful and dangerous things they say.

Look before I say things I have to say that I am on the same boat as
Che Guava. I can see to some exstent that he's a radical but I find other people's reactions to him at times to be just plain abusrd and radical aswell. Then again I am not a person who knows a whole lot about this. I need more info.

An attention whore, race baiter.

Imagine getting paid milllions to sit at home playing "I Spy" everyday. This is Sharpton, except he's spotting hints of racism and exploiting other peoples' paychecks, careers, and repuations to put some money in his pocket.

Though he does it for his black people, of course. He's always thinking of them.

Meh, I hate Jesse Jackson more personally. Al Sharpton just plays the race card to placate his fanbase.

Ok, let's try a new game: if you had to justify your beleifs about Rev Sharpton by citing just one incident or controversy, what would it be? (and just don't list it, 'splain it lucy! ;) )

He's a racist who gets away with it because he's a prominent black figure who can't be accused of racism - even though everyone knows he is. He's really annoying.

Really, people, look it up.

Thank you, I never knew that. Everything in America today is done to hold the black man down.
