I'm pretty sure that's where the "pet/street" formula comes from. Presumably Ms. Azalea went that route with her stage name because, well, she's a white girl trying to be a rapper, that sort of affectation comes with the territory.

But, yeah, there was a fashion among Victorian town-planners in Britain for naming streets after exotic foreign locales; the streets around us were called Cuba, China and Cairo. I think the idea was to suggest global trading links, although all this town exported was coal and pale ale, so it was probably over-stating things.
