It is commonly understood that the earlier you know what it is you want, the more time you have to achieve it and the more likely you are to achieve it.

But what is it you want in/through/by life?

Biologically speaking, the ultimate goal is to get as many succesfull offspring as possible. However, with our intelligence and culture we are now able to set all kinds of different goals for ourselves.

By what metric are you evaluating your life, or by what metric will you evaluate your life when you're about to die?

Is your goal to have many children? A few very succesfull one (how do you measure success then)? Is it to learn something? Mastering something? Build something? Experience something? Just plain getting rich? Helping people? Discover something?

Personally, I'm currently trying to decide on a long term goal for my life, so I will have some idea of what I should do.

Right now I have no idea.

Though there are so many different people here of different ages and experiences. Maybe someone here have an idea what a good goal for life is?

Not really an ultimate goal, but enjoy my life I guess.

I have no urge to make sure of any heritage or keeping my genes in the genepool, so that frees up quite a bit of elbow room. I have no ambition to get rich or make a career. I'm satisfied with where I'm at, and any improvements from that situation would be a bonus but not important enough to waste effort on it. To me always looking ahead makes you forget to enjoy where you're at.

getting some good loot from WoW heroics

Becoming a good person.

Pretty much this, trying to be involved in changing things for the better. Careerwise, I'm not interested in big money, just quality of life, and doing work I enjoy. Hopefully I can continue in research, and spend some of my spare time doing something socially productive.

I would like to have a presence in the genepool though; guess that makes me a Nazi ;)

Not particularly bothered about passing my genes on but I'd like to give myself some wiggle room.

At this point: Be a good husband and father, stay healthy and strong, have fun along the way.

Long-term: Remain like that until I'm really old; be able to toss my eventual grandkids high in the air.

I have no goals. The entire world broke it. :(

By now, I thought Id be in my own place, with a good steady job, and engaged to be married to a woman by this point in my life.

Chemistry or Medicine Nobel.

Get a doctorate in History, become a professor at an Ivy League, or reputable European University, become a published author (of hopefully a book that does moderately well).

There's also a fantasy book that I've had in my head since I was 15, and I've always wanted to have it published, but if I ever do, it wouldn't be until I'm much older, and have put much more thought into it.

Work to get a job I love, in a place I love, surrounded by people I love, and then work to spread that happiness to others.

I want to enjoy life, have a good time, not be too much of a dick, make people smile, see the world, eat a lot of bacon, sample the finest beers, see my football clubs do well, own a bunch of properties that will sustain me financially (already got 1!), meet likeminded people who get me, not die a painful death.

Kids don't really factor into it (yet)
